I don't mind diversity, but when a character exists solely to be diverse he becomes a caricature, and his presence is as racist as leaving him out. Compare to John Stewart, one of the Green Lanterns, whom truly showed how insignificant race is by not playing it up at every possible opportunity. Or Virgil Hawkins (Static), who was black to begin with, and surrounded with black culture, but that never took over the story because *gasp* he was defined by his personality as an individual and not simply his race.

Honestly, I *am* worried that this is a move directed towards political correctness, or a publicity stunt (or both). I have little faith in Marvel not to screw it up and be as preachy as possible.

P.S. Thanks
Like it or not practically all non-white characters in comics are consiously introduced for diversity, it's only with time and good writing that they become fully-formed characters in their own right. It's not necessarily discrimination on the part of the creators but a side-effect of the majority of the DC and Marvel universes being formed in the 40s and 60s respectively. The new Spider-Man shouldn't be judged this early on, though the fact that he exists in the largely irrelevant Ultimate line means that his success or failure as a character will probably have little impact.

Personally I think the better approach is to create more original characters rather than "legacy" characters with different ethnic/gender backgrounds, but either approach can work.

Spawn is another good example of the type of character you're talking about where the fact that the character is black, was simply a part of his identity rather than his reason for being, like say DC's Vibe.

Finally Marvel have successfully introduced more diverse characters in the past, primarily within the X-Men titles which are of course overtly anti-discriminatory. Of course the cast is still dominated by caucasions, but it has a higher percentage of female characters than most other parts of the Marvel/DC universes.

Finally the Daily Mail is hateful, hypocritical rag and should never be given the benefit of the doubt.

To be honest, we all know how this will end. The fans won't like that they replaced Peter with some "new and improved" hero and eventually we'll learn that he didn't die. He was secretly recruited by SHIELD for a secret mission with Wolverine in a jungle wilderness. And now he has returned to take back his mantle as the true Spiderman. And this kid will be relegated to sidekick or less.
Wolverine is already dead, so no chance of that happening. We even saw him in Valhala. Along with Cyclops and Spider-Man.

Hrm... This prolly wont come to fruition. However seriously I think the only way they could make the new guy hated even more is to align him with the Muslim faith.

It almost seems like this whole thing is flamebait.

If I didn't know better, I would start to suspect that they wanted a hispanic/black/gay superhero, but wanted to keep spiderman for the sake of more money.

I'm not really familiar with the ultimate verse... how exactly did Wolverine die? He like, survived a Nuke in the normal verse. Aswell as a literal deboning and being flattened by a steam roller.

What killed him?
One word: Magneto.

Pfft. Some people happen to be black you know, so why couldn't spiderman be black? It isn't 'preachy' or 'politically correct' to have characters that aren't white. You've even noticed yourself that John Stewart was black without being a caricature, so why is this any different?

That wasn't Valhala! That was a highly advanced virtual reality program. Don't you see, this is all going according to the plan of Magneto. He'll soon have them all brainwashed and fighting for him against humanity. Bwahahahahaha!

Honestly, I don't read comics, but from what I have read/heard this kind of stuff always ends like this. See: Scarlet Spider. Or Superman. They never stay dead. Especially if the fans are unhappy.

I remember Static Shock. That was a good show. They could have introduced him into the Spiderman story (Peter was a teen in this continuity) and that could have worked well. Or just give him his own comic, if he doesn't already have one. Of course, I think DC has the rights to him. Too bad, because that could have been just what Marvel is after here.

I agree, though. You can make race a part of a character's identity without making it the character's identity. Take Denzel Washington. He's always a great actor, but, for me, he's at his best when he's not playing a character defined by his race. Take the movie Training Day. He played a crooked cop that happened to be black. His race was a part of his identity, but it didn't define him. Hell, at the end of the movie, I was upset to see him get killed. "No! You can't kill Denzel!"

what's embarrassing is the amount of negative feedback this gets, not because he is not white but because the replaced peter parker in an alternate universe. i call bullshit on that, when they replaced Steve Rodgers with another white dude the only thing people were whining about was his use of guns.

Why should he be he?
mainly because we already have spiderwoman and spidergirl :p
I figured there probably would be. It was more of a general point on how if a character isn't a white male, that there should be a reason for it. At times, it gets irritating.

Why the fuck is Spiderman black now anyway? Yeah yeah, diversity and tolerance and all that bullshit. Im all for them, but making Spiderman black?
Spidey 2099 is half-hispanic himself (if my research is accurate). I don't see that big a deal since he obviously won't be the Spidey everyone is familiar with.

Really, this part of your post is dripping with unfortunate implications...

I'm not a big reader of comic books, but i know they rebooted the Green Lantern as a ethnic individual. I hear it was met with a generally dis-favorable reaction. Will people stop liking because one version of spider man because he is now Black/Hispanic? maybe, but i still think the reboot is a good idea.

The portion of the global population that feel they are white and privileged is shrinking every year. If people with super powers did exist in the real world I can guarantee you that you would probably find more ethnic super heroes and a shit load of white super villains.

just a thought.

Usually posts and articles on the Escapist are AMAZING at giving spoiler warnings :) . Could we please keep it like that?

It's the Daily Mail. I'm surprised they didn't state the new Spidey was a gay Muslim immigrant who was living off benefits.
