...I'm okay with this. In all honesty, I think hispanics and mixed race people are misrepresented in pretty much any form of media. Plus, I grew up in Queens myself, and the white population is pretty damn low. Well, it is where I grew up and in the nearby areas.

Why the fuck is Spiderman black now anyway? Yeah yeah, diversity and tolerance and all that bullshit. Im all for them, but making Spiderman black? Seems like a marketing ploy more than anything else. But hell, they know it, I know it and everyone else does to. Just a shame this will probably flop in a horrible way.

EDIT: Oh, and I almost forgot. Daily Mail is always good for a laugh, but not much else. This is a fine example indeed.
Well, if you add an ethnicity to a character, you automatically get moar cooler character. IT'S TRUE!
Haven't heard any complaints about Samuel Jackson playing Nick Fury yet.
Oh...and by the way...

Why the heck not? Your last statement defeats itself, and probably warrants reinspection.

Eh, I'm kind of "meh" about the whole thing. I don't mind a new character taking up an iconic identity but they killed off (A fairly popular alternate universe version of) Peter Parker and replace him with someone completely new we've never seen before.

You do that, you're gonna piss people off, but at least Spidey didn't turn evil and insane and nab a bunch of green lantern rings off the slain bodies of his compatriots.

Still, you can have a Spider-Man be of a mixed race and have it work out nicely, case in point:

Ahh... Miguel O'hara, you are awesome!

So it's the Daily Mail acting like the same shit-flinging retards that the glorified toilet paper company has been composed of since day one. This just in: The sky is reported to be blue. I believe Ozymandias said it best: Biased journalism sells more copies. Sad, yes. But ultimately true.

Oh, but he is a publicity stunt. Not because he's black, but because they killed Peter Parker to create him. Do you know how much the whole "Death of Peter Parker!" thing was played up?

Also, I'm still angry at Ultimatum and I'm not reading this just out of spite.
Oh, you just kept reading, I'm sorry.

I'll give everyone here a hint, it's okay to talk about this rag as the Daily Fail.

I just want to know how this new guy gets his powers. If it's ANOTHER radioactive spider (because they're just everywhere, aren't they) then I'm out before I'm even in.

What the fuck is wrong with DC/Marvel and their whole "rebooting" and "color/flavor of the month" thing?
Peter Parker existed since 1962, there's probably people that have been following his stories since they were children back then for near 50 years now, WHY in gods name does he have to be black or hispanic or whatever now all of a sudden?
Actually, superhero comics are dying precisely because it's the exact same people that have been following his stories since they were children, and very few new people are interested in reading those same comics because of the Big Two's obsession with pandering to its aging fanbase. The obsession with keeping everything the exact same always because heaven forfend anyone piss off the middle-aged children still obsessed with that nostalgia from 50 years also has led to comics becoming exclusive, incomprehensible messes that very few people who don't already read comics are actually interesting in pursuing. So good on Marvel, I say, for at least trying something (a wee bit) different. For once.

Dexter111 said:
Why don't they just... oh I don't know, maybe create a NEW character and let him be all that instead of retconning and changing everything every few damn years?
Because previously mentioned immature adult demographic is obsessed with keeping everything the same and react very, very badly to change of any sort, establishing new characters is even more difficult than establishing legacy characters.

Dexter111 said:
Not to mention them doing it even to Mythological/Historical characters e.g. see Thor or the whole "Hydra" thing on Captain America, because apparently Nazis aren't in anymore xD
This I just don't get because Hydra was first create around, what, the '60s? Boy, you're really serious about not wanting your comics to change, huh? ;)

Anyway, back to the article, I highly recommend adding in Beck's bizarre rant in which I'm pretty sure he's trying to say that the new Spider-Man is the result of some sort of Obama-led conspiracy.

The Daily Mail has always been the paper to avoid.

It hates anything fun and different and tried to create a shit storm out of the smallest possible story.

Most blokes read the Daily Sport for it's gorgeous .. er .. editing and fantastic .. hmm .. stories ........ honest.

...why is this guy half black and half Hispanic? It just seems an...odd choice. "Hey, look at us. We're so racially tolerant we're actually forcing them to interbreed!"

Y'know? I'm not saying Hispanic blacks don't exist, I'm just saying it's a bit of a niche crowd. It doesn't even put him outside his element, so the whole ordeal looks a bit forced to me. I'm not quite sure exactly where this idea that all new superheroes have to be a minority in some shape or form has come from, but I really don't like it. I don't like this new Spiderman. Not because he's black or Hispanic, but because...well...look at him. Peter Parker may have been..white and nerdy..but this kid looks like he spends more time with the pink 'n' fluffy than Parker ever did with the failing at women.

If this is a cynical attempt to get hits - and I'd really prefer to give the Mail the benefit of the doubt here
Yeah, no. As far as I'm concerned Marvel can do what they want with their characters and if people don't like it, then the simple solution is to stop reading it. And as for this, it's simply jumping to the nearest convienient conclusion to generate a headline to get more sales.

So he is half black and half hispanic. This just screams token minority. Ah well it's better than if they were to retcon Peter Parker into a half black half hispanic.

Some points:

1) The "Daily Fail" is just that. They are a joke and phrase things in a way to just be as sensationalist as possible. Kudos to the Escapist for pointing it out. Although more derision here would have been nice :)

2) This is the Ultimates Universe, not main Marvel Continuity. So... blah. It doesn't mean anything. Also, it's stupid in general. Most of the Ultimates universe is stupid. As you can imagine, I am not a fan and I don't buy the books because of it.

3) Whomever said Marvel panders to it's aging fans is retarded, especially in context of Spider-Man. Just go and google "one more day" or "brand new day" and you will see how the powers that be at Marvel have royally pissed off the majority of the older spiderman fans just to try and make the character "relevant" to the kiddies.

Frankly, the biggest problem with comics is that we have these character driven franchises that are just open ended until infinity. Someone makes a character like Spiderman and then they ride it for 60 years - there is only so much forward progression you can do with that and still keep it interesting. It's why there is no such thing as continuity in comics. It's why people die and then come back and then die again. It's why they reboot series and entire franchises from time to time.

It's really almost an American phenomina. No one wants to let old characters die and fade away. The companies want to milk the IP for all the money it's worth and the fans refuse to let the franchises die. I don't get it. I've loved plenty of comics in my life and I've also been experienced to Japanese Manga where the books have definite begining and ends, and I can say that happily I would follow a creator who makes good stories, rather than a specific series or character. I suppose that might be the difference - in Japan the manga is still driven by creators, in America, the comics are manufactured by companies who hire creators to write for a character.

Hmm, I've never thought of that before...

Maybe they meant 'Gay' in its older meaning, maybe it'll just be a happy Spider Man?
Haven't thought of THAT, have you?

Top tip, if you want hours of laughing at hilarious entertainment, read the comments section under any Daily Mail article.
Apparently, this is a sign that the blacks and the gays have 'won' :)

From the top 5 rated comments:

It feels like if you're white, heterosexual, single, able-bodied, law-abiding, English and live in England you have no rights at all.
- Simon, Barnstaple, UK., 3/8/2011 4:02

Strange how a (likely over 50) white, English man, who reads the daily mail has no input in the story direction of an american comic book set in america isn't it? Damn PC Brigade!

It's amazing how many of them, despite having probably never read a comic in their lives, except perhaps the 'Warlord' style comics of the 50s full of Nazis going 'Achtung' and 'Yeaargh' as our brave Tommys slaughter them, are convinced that a black spiderman is the downfall of society.

Especially considering how many hundreds of other things have meant the downfall of society.

As noted above, also, comic book ink gives you cancer.

But Daily Mail ink gives you brain damage.
