Just recently I felt this way. I use to play Halo 2 and 3 online. I was pretty average but would beat other average players. I got my friend into it. I basicaly taught him how to play Halo. Now he does nothing but play it and he can whoop my ass. I feel kinda sorry for him seeing how I might have ruined his social life. \

But anyways, after that I realized I am never ever going to have a chance to be "pro" at any game because I just don't have the patience to play that long to get that good. Then again, I have always been above average in racing games.

I suck at everything involving the word "multi-player". I'm a single-player gamer and only play multi-player when I'm with a bunch of friends. I find that I end up knowing a lot more about a game than my friends by playing single-player, though.

Nope.

For me it's not about being the best or not even necessarily good. It's about having fun and having a challenge. Someone beating me isn't that depressing.
But what happens when you have that challenge and u can't complete it because your used to way smaller challenges? Or when you finally complete that challenge and you feel great untill you realize everyone else owned that challenge months ago?
Why should I care what other people think about me or my gaming skills? They might be better than me in some regards, I'm better than them in some regards. It all balances out. And if someone begins to give me flak about 'being a loser noob 4 not havng pwned the boss b4 this' then they are acting childish and elitist and it's their problem.

I don't define myself according to what others think or believe about me. If I feel great about completing a challenge that took me a month, I'm not going to sour my day by pondering what someone else thinks about it.

If I face a challenge I can't complete on a game that I like, I bang my head against it until it crumbles! And then I pound the rubble to dust. If it's a game that I don't like and suddenly I find an insurmountable challenge, then I throw the game away. I have better things to do than complete some challenge on a game I don't like. There are other games to be played, there is a good book to be read or it's just a nice day outside to go for a 40 kilometer long cycling trip.

Hey, join the club. I am beyond useless at multiplayer. So, if you ever see me around on Left4Dead, join in and you can kick my ass. haha. Seriously though, the only thing that matters is that you're having fun. Just enjoy the games and the time with friends.

In the end its all just games, even though winnings can be had. but yeah ive had these feelings, though I tend to humble myself quite often, sometimes im forced to be humble heh heh. Im not the gamer that jumps around the couch saying "hahah owned!...owned!" I understand that most of the time its a combination of time and proper practice.

Still it does suck to think you are decent, and then have some jerk destroy you, and then call you a noob.

I don't really play multiplayer, at all. It's mainly because I suck at them, but I've sort of grown out of the whole Counter-Strike phase. However, that's not to say I don't enjoy playing with friends, either co-op online or competition if we're playing Mario Kart Wii or something. At least then, you can get a laugh out of sucking so much that you always end up last in the race.

I don't know, I don't see the fun in going online to 'pwn some n00bs', as the phrase has it. Pwning some noobs with friends though, now that is fun.

I didn't even have a next gen system (or any system for that matter) up until February when I got my 360. You can imagine how rusty I was. Slowly but surely, I have gotten a lot better. Although without trying to sound too conceited, I used to kick everyone's ass at the arcade back in the day, so it only makes sense that I'm somewhat decent playing against others.

in that case it's easy, since I don't care about being good :)

For me it's the fun and the challenge. If it's a hard challenge and I beat it, then yay (psychonauts final level). If I had fun without beating it, then yay (like defeating Civ 4 by conquering everyone at the hardest difficulty. Never managed that). If I had fun while beating it, double yay (defeating Civ 4 at hardest difficulty by any victory).

See, easy.

If I'm not having fun and can't beat the challenge in a reasonable amount of time, there are books to read, other games to play and going for a nice walk or a long trip with a bicycle are always options.

EDIT: How good you are and how good you are not depend entirely on other gamers and their skill levels. Don't give a f**k about what others think and it doesn't matter.

It all depends.

For example, I prefer to get my kills through stealth and quick, deadly strikes. Because of this, I kick ass at games like Counter Strike, which have an 'intelligent' map.

However, in Halo 3, because of the sonar (it's passive sonar, not radar), the only way to sneak up on someone is to move really slowly, leaving you wide open. Playing online on Halo 3, I'm generally bottom of my team with 4-8 frags per match.

So it depends on how you play, and how it meshes with:
[ol][li]How the game works[/li]
[li]How other players work[/li]
[li]How lucky you are[/li][/ol]

Along with a few other minor factors.

In short, if you find you just can't do well at a game no matter how much you practice, then try another game; it may be more suited to how your mind works.

No matter how good you are, someone is going to be better. Which is why it's best to find those who are worse then you, then call them a n00b.

I'm moderately good. I usualy place somewhere between first and middle of online games.
Compared to my circle of friends it depends what we are playing really, but I am one of the best. Unless it comes to guitar hero/rock band. Then I suck.

well I sucked at this online game for a while, until I got really fed up and learned and practiced like hell. Now I pwn so hard at it that I don't play it anymore because almost everyone are way too noob for me. I do play it ocassionally to play against some top players, I usually get my ass kicked, but it's great fun and I've learned so much more.

Take solice in the fact my friend, that the sacrifice for becoming that good at a particular game means the death of a social life and the notable absense of a lady friend(unless you have a lady friend who totally loves to watch you play games/ play them with you and if that is the case where can I find such a women).

That's pretty much how everyone starts off before they start playing online. You're not alone.
