Bad games. We've all played them, or at least heard of them. They waste your time and you feel like you've thrown your money into the shredder. But sometimes, there are games that are not just bad, but they annoy you with how much wasted ideas and potential they have in them. So, list those games that you've played (or even heard about in great detail) that you would love to play a good version of.

And please, put the flamethrower away beforehand.

I don't like JRPGs, mainly because I don't even think they should be categorized as RPGs at all (but that's an argument for another thread). However, a huge number of the ones I've seen have fantastic settings and art direction (minus characters and some enemies). I just wish a game I actually like would be set in the amazing worlds that lots of JRPGs take place in.

Sonic Unleashed. So many good ideas. Too many fuck ups.

I liked some of the ideas. But it is still the worst game I have ever touched.

Red Faction 2. But thankfully they fixed it with Guerrilla so I can't really complain.

Darkest of Days definitely gave me that feeling. I remember saying, "It's the worst game I ever bought, and the best US Civil War/World War I FPS ever made."

Fallout: New Vegas is a great game, but it loses a lot because it's so buggy. If only they had better QA, it would be my game of the year.

Mindjack and Crackdown 2 had a cool concept - while you're in single-player campaign, a person can jump in at any time to join your game. In Mindjack, you can even play as an enemy of the person hosting the game. However, both games were pretty lackluster overall.

Superman Returns. Oh good lord, Superman Returns. We all know that the Man of Steel's video game track record is, shall we say, less than stellar. But me, I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Superman fanboy. I believe in Big Blue, and by virtue of that belief, I also believe that someday, there will be a decent Superman game.

I thought Superman Returns was going to be that game. I followed the development history of it, all the while thinking, "It's been years since Superman 64. Gaming has evolved, and developers have learned from their past mistakes. Spider-Man 2 proved superhero games based on movies can be good. This is gonna be the one!"

Well, as anyone who played it well tell you, it wasn't. Superman Returns isn't as abysmally bad as Superman 64 was, and I'd even go so far as to say the mechanics of flight are quite good... Unfortunately, everything else sucks. The combat is slow and stilted, the controls for any movement other than flying are unresponsive, the missions are repetitive and boring, the graphics are uninspired, and the voice acting is simply painful. I played it for hours on end, trying to convince myself otherwise, but deep down, I knew the truth: the game was bad. Not eye-gougingly terrible, but still pretty awful.

The waste of potential was undoubtedly the worst part. It was so close to getting it right, and yet so far.

Ah, well. Someday, Supes. If Batman can do it, so can you.

JRPGs in general, Skies of Arcadia Legends stands out in my mind because it was a great story with fun characters but the game play >.< oy vey, the ship battles were funnish but it'd be more fun if I had loading times on the guns and had to evade and maneuver to avoid damage and line up shots like a real naval battle.

The Resident Evil games come to mind too, and... damn some Dinosaur survival horror game that played and looked like a half breed between jurassic park and resident evil... the concept sounded fun but dammit all those games I was wishing for the magic "make it better" button to appear.

Alpha Protocol.

Why was the gameplay so terrible, Obsidian? Why? Couldn't you just have ripped off Mass Effect or any given James Bond game and be happy?

If Alpha Protocol's gameplay would've been as good as that of ME2, I would've had a different GotY this year.

Alas.

Steambot Chronicles! build your own robot, fight bandit robots, compete in arena battles and play musical instruments on street corners for money. If they had translated the music lyrics better, and touched up the graphics, it would have been awesome...

This.
So much promise and ambition and so much crap to ruin it.
It just blows my mind how they could leave in that hacking minigame. They even managed to make the controls so clunky, you´re only fighting the interface. Nobody in charge at Obsidian to say, hey let´s improve the game, by just cutting this part.

Still, you know, it's worth it just for the story.

Seriously. Not ruined. Needs a sequel.

I might go harsh on the gameplay, but, man, beating every stinking laggy mission was totally worth it for the awesome ending.

Biggest disappointment in my stack of games: X3. I really wanted to like it. First off, I couldn't even figure out how to cheat. God forbid they just put in god mode and millionzillion moneys cheats. I did the requisite hours of research and downloaded the cheat things, still nothing happened. But that's a minor thing. The worst part which took me a while to figure out, there's nobody to talk to. Technically you can talk to other pilots, but it's as engaging as the AI thing you talk to. And the trading, getting absolutely nowhere after hours of flying didn't help. I really liked Caravaneer, a flash game trading game, so I don't dislike the genre. Worst use of my gaming money so far.

I couldn't move past Thorton's character, if TF2 is a hat simulator, Alpha Protocol is a jerk simulator...

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2, the cover system is pretty good really, why couldn't they have made it a proper Rainbow Six game? I don't want to play a regenerating health soldier in an anti-terrorist game.

Well, some people like playing as sarcastic jerks. Nathan Drake's a pretty polarizing figure as well.

All of the Fable games. If they were twice as long they'd be good games. Also FFXIII, which if you cut of the first five hours of fannying about would be an excelent game.

I do kinda like The Misadventures of P. B. Winterbottom, quite a clever puzzle game, but if they made the controls a bit more responsive and made it so that you don't have to set things up EXACTLY right to complete the puzzle, it'd be great.

Oh, and more than one music track playing during the game's levels wouldn't hurt either.

Darkest of Days. Excellent idea, but has to have been one of the worst games I have played.
