Damn Whale wars....

Now its no secret that I hate the show Whale Wars, it's just a bunch of nit wits doing absolutely nothing while playing sad music over a whale being killed. Im just going to list off some complaints.

Overly in your face about it:
If you wan't to be a Vegetarian or Vegan fine more power to you, but don't treat me like an asshole for eating a chicken.

They lie
"I have been shot, please understand what we are facing!" oh what's that?....you where never shot!?

Wasting
Ok so the whale is dead and they are hauling it on bored to harvest the meat and oil, but here comes the sea shepherd! What do they do? Cut the line so the dead whale goes back into the ocean and gets used for nothing, Making the entire death a wast!

"But there smart!"
Pigs are smart but nobody bitches about them!

"They deserve equal rights!" That's a horrible way to look at it, giving your food equal rights is just plane silly. Don't give animals equal rights, just don't destroy all of them on earth.

We are animals too
We need to get back to the fact that we are animals, we just became self aware and are smart enough to hunt effectively. We are animals, we are omnivores! If it comes down to us or the whales...goodbye whales

Won't make up there damned minds
In said boat crash they requested help from the ship they just drove in front of, the whalers where uneasy about going over (more likely a language problem), they did stop however. The whalers decided to go over and try to help...only to be met with "STAY BACK" and "WE WILL HAVE YOU ARRESTED"...moments after the SOS was sent.

Racism
The comments in this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27nX3Dsv9Xk&feature=related) are the most discussing, racist, undignified things I have read.


Now if you don't like whaling that's fine, if you want to be a vegan that's fine too. Its just when stuff like this happens that I get pissed off. The lesson is ~Believe whatever you want, just don't be a dick about it~.

I'm with you on the racism. It's a category mistake. There are whalers who are Japanese, but that doesn't mean the Japanese are whalers, any more than if an American desecrates a corpse by pissing on it means that Americans are desecrators.

That the Japanese government condones these whalers is a very bad thing, but my government condones sending soldiers to kill people in foreign wars that have bugger all to do with us, so there you go.

I've watched a few episodes simply because it's absolutely hilarious. They make a really dramatic and complicated plan to stop whaling vessels, then go do it and either fuck it up completely or succeed and it's actually done fuck all.

First off, I don't know much about the show. I think that Sea Shepherd are fantastic though.

Actually, Sea Shepherd have managed to cause a great many problems [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whaling_in_Japan#Opposition_by_environmental_groups] to the Japanese whaling fleet for several years running now. Last year the hunt was called off altogether, and the year before that the hunt only caught about half of the whales it wanted to.

As you full well know, this has nothing to do with chicken lol. I as it happens I am veggie, but I have no problem with people eating meat if they want to. I do object to inhumane practices (like battery farms, but also whale hunting, fox hunting, fur trapping) because I think in a modern world it's utterly unnecessary. It's worth noting that I have no objection to aboriginal hunters and the like, because they kill so few whales it has little impact on the population, and they (especially the Arctic peoples) have few alternatives in the way of food.

I agree it is a waste, but in the long run it means that whale hunting becomes unprofitable, and people will stop doing it. It's doing a slightly objectionable thing for the long term good.

I do actually - I often say if I were ever going to eat meat, I'd eat a dog before I would a pig, purely on an intelligence level. (Of course, I'd rather eat fish or a sheep before both of those options, because fish feel little pain, and sheep are stupid and easy to kill quickly and painlessly)

I don't believe animals do deserve equal rights. You're right, that is plain silly. That doesn't mean it's morally OK to kill them in utterly vile ways for no reason. Also, the problem with whale hunting is that a lot of these species ARE endangered, so if we allow whaling to continue, we will "destroy all of them on earth".

It doesn't come down to "us or the whales". That's a strawman. The only countries that practice industrial whale hunting are both First World countries with among the highest GDP in the world. They don't NEED whales meat or blubber to survive or even to prosper (the whale industry makes very little money, because very few people actually like whale meat [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whaling_in_Japan#Commercial_Viability]!). They only go whaling out of tradition, which in my eyes is unjustifiable (like fox hunting, now thankfully gone in my dear old country).

I don't know anything about the incident in question. Suffice to say that both groups hate each other and these kind of "miscommunication" will happen. But that doesn't mean the cause isn't a good one.

Seriously, though; you're right, there is absolutely no justification for such language under any circumstances. This is the denizens of youtube though, so it's to be expected [http://xkcd.com/202/]. Also worth mentioning that I haven't heard Sea Shepherd activists using such profanity (though I fully accept that I can't prove it's never happened).

Like I said, I don't try to inflict vegetarianism on anyone else, but I do think that if you're going to nom on animals, it's better to kill them humanely where possible.
And I think that the activists have the right to protest a perceived injustice if they want to. The Australian and New Zealand Government agrees as well. They never prosecute the activists, as the Japanese government is always asking them to.
Speaking of which, I think that the Japanese are definitely being "a dick about it", given that the Australians have told them not to go hunting near Australia and the Japanese Govt told them to basically get fucked because the Aus Govt had no legal jurisdiction. I can't remember the details, but it was very uncompromising of the Japanese Govt.
In addition, the fact that Japan continues the hunt under the guise of 'Scientific hunting' is complete bullshit. At least Norway has the balls to refuse the treaty outright. Japan has no economic reason to carry on whaling, they only do it out of sheer bloody mindedness, which again, strikes me as being more of "a dick about it."

My problem with whale wars isn't so much what they stand for, but how the idiot who is 'Captain' treats his crew. He clearly values whales over people, and often puts his people in danger because he hasn't been trained properly.

Your crew lives are in your hands, you don't piss that up the wall. I'm not a master sailor by any means, but I could run that ship better than him.

I know the Japanese are lying about doing research and actually processing the whales for food and that sucks. But when the Sea Shepperd has lost people at sea, the 'evil' whaling fleet has turned out to help find them.

At least they respect the laws of the sea.

I don't like Whale Wars as a show, the Captain treats his crew as shit. But I do like what they stand for.

I was in Australia a few years back and I visited a shut down whaling station. People don't whale for food, or the fat for car oil. What they farm it for is for a couple millilitres of a particular substance that they use to put perfume in. Then they take the fat for car oil, then dump the rest back into the sea. That's what makes me sick about the whole thing. So yeah, I really don't like whaling, particularly because the vast majority of them are endangered species.

So yeah, OP, get your facts straight about what they're using the whale for- luxury items that already have other, less environmentally damaging alternatives, they don't use the meat, there are people who hunt whales for food- up in the arctic circle- and the UN doesn't have a problem with it, they take sustainable amounts, and they consume the whole whale. With the Japanese, the vast majority of the whale is tossed back into the sea anyways.

I like 'em, although I think they're terrible at what they do. They could stand to have a smarter crew.

I have two main problems with the killing of whales by these whalers: 1) They're sentient, sapient beings, and if I'm not mistaken, they're as intelligent as humans. 2) It's flat-out illegal. They claim to be doing "research," but their research amounts to, "This should fetch a hefty price on the market!"

Also, fans of Whale Wars being racist ≠ Sea Shepherds being racist. And pigs aren't at all smart.
