As has been stated, the game is loosely based on a part of the Divine Comedy. The story itself almost certainly isn't a ripoff of Devil May Cry, but I don't know that well because they clearly take liberties with this.

I suppose a better question is, would they be using this source material if not for the influence of other games, such as DMC? I don't have that much knowledge on DMC, so I can't really take this.

Thats a negative. Its a game based on the Divine Comedy written by Dante Alighieri in the 13th century. You will probably required to read his work in 10 - 12 grade.
I feel like picking nits today. 1300s are the 14th century.

Year x is in the (floor(x / 100) + 1)th century.

This is probably so that 0-99 CE is the first century.

Oh god, that's sad.

OT: Of course not. It's based on a poem (and by "based", I mean they took the name). I will, however, say it rips off God of War shamelessly.

Is Dante's Inferno an off shoot of Devil may cry?

Excuse my "noobness" but it does seem possible, both lead characters are called Dante, it's a hack and slash involving demonic demons and other bad thingys, basically it's in the same vein as DMC.

I have only played half of the first DMC and I have obviously haven't played Dante's Inferno it is just an observation, I am probably completely wrong I just wanted to ask you intelligent folks.
It's a similar game mechanic, true; it comes from God of War, which is itself closer than most games to Devil May Cry.

However, from a story standpoint, no, this is not the same thing. They are two different Dante's (Dante in Dante's Inferno is a representation of Dante Aligheri, medieval Italian poet; Dante in Devil May Cry is a generic bad ass)

i also read that visceral games was founded by ex gow-programmers so it makes perfectly sense that the titles are kind of similar, but it´s so similar it really turned me off a bit.
I'm not sure that's true. Visceral Games is actually just EA Redwood Shores with a new name. You know, the guys who did Dead Space.

I'm expecting some awesome stuff from Dante's Inferno. I played the demo and it was hella fun, and the developer diaries make it all look awesome. It's definitely not going to be a game that I play while my family or girlfriend are around, but it'll be a fun time had with my buddies. I'm looking forward to it, anyways.

OK, so your either not good at reading books, or your trolling.

Anyway I'll bite, Dante's Inferno is loosely based on a book called Dante's Inferno (nitpickers shut up) which chronicle's the story of a man called Dante on a journey through hell guided by a dude called Virgil... (see the connection)

If your not good at reading, then I suggest you get yourself The Divine Comedy and have a read, its very good.

If your trolling well done you, seeing the response's from some of the people here that quite clearly don't know who Dante the writer is makes me happy they aren't in my friends list.
Just to set the record straight, I know about the book and Dante going through the seven circles of hell (I haven't read the book but I have always known about it).

I wasn't trolling, I saw there was a few similarities between DMC and Dante's inferno, so I thought the latter was an off shoot of the former.

Just a niggle, "if your not good at reading ..... have a read it's very good" (your second paragraph.)

God of War rippoff?..... In hell?........is that a bad thing?

as for dmc - no guns and the range attacks actualy do damage so no.
In most cases, no, but in this case, yes.

Its not necessarally bad, its just that its exactly like God of War.

Same controls, same myth based setting in ancient times, same battle system, same enemy types and the same story structure.

its also made by EA so it will probably suck.

OK in which case go read the book again, since its 9 circles, not 7. There are the Seven circles of modern day sin then Malebolgia the Fraud and another that I can't remember... you see i'm not too good at reading.

The similarities between DMC and Dante's inferno is because DMC rips off the original poem in terms of names, the fighting however is based on God of War but with DMC's responsiveness.

Dante's inferno is a book on which the character Dante (from devil may cry) got his name, Dante's Inferno the game is based on the book which is why the main character is called Dante. Devil May Cry isn't the first to use this name and they certainly wont be the last.

Like I said before I have never read the book the first time so reading the book again will be a problem.

I read seven somewhere, so I said seven, either way it's irrelevant and is nothing more than semantics.

That is the answer I was looking for and now I have it this thread can die, unless people want to carry on discussing Dante's inferno.

I know what both games are based on, I know the name Dante will be used again thats why I never asked either of those questions, I asked is one an off shoot of another? I now know it isn't.

So this thread can be left to die now.

OT: No, it's a new IP, well, it's inspired by Dante's original story but it's a new game franchise.

I know you haven't read the book, I was joking about you not reading to good and then me not reading your comment that you hadn't read the book....

Its like a really ignorant circular reference.

If it is any ripoff, it's one of God of War. Even both demos had the same progression. As soon as I climbed that huge demon and had the ability to control it, I could only think of God of War.

And from what I understood, it's not an excellent clone either. If you're into this genre, you'll love it though.

Dante's Inferno is a poem about a crusader going through hell to find his wife.

Devil May Cry is a game (also Anime now) about a dude called Dante with the blood of a demon, who's...well pass time is to kill demons to stop them from controlling the human world.

Personality wise, Dante is a carefree badass who will kill anything and just laugh afterwards (or ride a bazooka missile) but also has a serious side that is only shown in DMC3. Dante's Inferno Dante is a crusader with no emotion, other then sadism and a motivation to save his wife. (Personally I think he went to hell just to go to lust)

No, Devil May Cry is way better. Plus, Dante's Inferno takes its gameplay from God of War moreso than DMC. And seriously, can you juggle demonic marionettes with your dual-wielded pistols in Dante's Inferno? No? Didn't think so.

No. Aside from the name "Dante" and them both being hack-and-slash, they share nothing.

and GOD. DAMNIT. PEOPLE. Stop calling them "God of War" ripoffs. If anything, Hack and Slashers are all Gauntlet or Golden Axe ripoffs. GoW was not first. It was not best. Just the most popular.

I do apologize for not knowing everything, how does it feel knowing everything though?
