I know it's never going to happen, but who else thinks this would be awesome?
I saw this and it got me thinking

It would be so cool..

Dunno how it would work though

Dark and grown up? Like, sad, depressing sub-plots to add to the depth of the characters? I know! Maybe Yellow Ranger is reduced to turning tricks on the street to keep her children fed? Ooh! Ooh! Maybe Blue Ranger develops a violent, self-destructive addiction to smack? I think that'd be fantastic. Maybe, in a shocking twist, Red Ranger turns out to be Yellow Ranger's baby-daddy.

That's it, I'm starting a script for this. Just you wait, Legendary Films will pick up my script, and I will officially be the screenwriter for the dark film adaptation of Power Rangers, most likely directed by Zack Snyder, knowing his taste in film direction. It will be luke-warm with the critics, but will develop a devoted cult following.

Just you wait!!

No, it's just too silly and camp for that to work. It'd be really bad, and not in a 'so bad it's good' way. Just bad

I wouldn't turn my nose up at it. But i think they'd probably have to ditch the costumes and gay colour coordination. Though I could see a mature plot featuring five young adults being given the responsibility and power of protecting the earth from giant space aliens....

Do you know what i want more though? A thunderbirds film that doesn't suck.

Dark and grown-up. Power Rangers.

Two things that should never be in the same sentence at the same time. Yeah... that would be an AWFUL idea.

"Dark and grown Power Rangers."

...

That sounds like a punchline looking for a joke.

I'm pretty sure some of the Japanese Power Ranger spin-offs was dark and grown up. I just remember seeing it in a Japanese magazine when I was younger so maybe it wasn't Power Rangers :p.

No. nonononononononono. Enough with making things dark and gritty, it does not make them mature or entertaining. Of course the masses will lap it up, they love angst because it makes characters relatable. Unfortunately I'm not one of those depressive people who whine about their fate and those people just annoy me.

You know, not everything needs to be dark and gritty, and the Power Rangers are somewhere at the top of that list.

Meh everything is already being re-imagined as dark and gritty, you know what I really want?
Did any of you play Dynasty Warriors Gundam or Bleach?
The one where they go basically through every arc and every series in some sort of historic thing, I want that Power Rangers version, I would buy it in a heart beat and it would be AMAZING! Also Grayson Carter, best red ranger ever, just saying.

OOH!! And you could have Bulk and Skull as playable characters in the last battle of Power Rangers in Space because that would be awesome, I want this game so badly...

I don't think I can take any Power Rangers related thing seriously, even when it's all gritty and mature.

I think this thread is evidence of a phenomena I've long thought true. We all have things we enjoyed from our childhood but as we got older, they stayed the same. Usually and particularly if decent and well made, they can stand the test of time and still hold some enjoyment for us as adults and young adults. But something does disappear as we get older, more pragmatic and cynical perhaps.

And so this thread...I'm older than the Power Rangers craze which came about two crazes after my childhood. For me it was He Man from Filmation, and to a lesser extent, the original Star Wars trilogy and the comics that went with it. Next, in my brother's era came the Teenage Mutant Nija Turtles, the WWF/WWE and Ghostbusters, then years later still, the whole Power Rangers thing. And here is where we all have something in common.

I know I would love to see a modern remake of He Man and more, a remake to cater to adults. Children's shows simply cannot explore, show or so much as suggest adult themes such as violence, sex, romance, loss or terror. But as much as I enjoy rewatching the children's originals, a grown up, contemporary version would be better now. If I had kids one day, I would derive enjoyment from watching them watch and enjoy my old favourite shows but for myself it would be nice to see those same characters in stories aimed at adults. A He Man-Teela love story would get my money whether or not it was even any good :)

Nintendo are also an example of this. Their consoles were host to great games as I grew up, fun and unforgettable titles. But they didn't grow up with me. When I hit my 20s a decade ago, I noticed they hadn't been keeping up very well. The Gamecube had RE4 and a handful of other great titles, but I'd long since lost interest in yet another Zelda/Mario game. The Wii is the current iteration and still holds true. Nintendo seem to cater the most to younger gamers and I have seen nothing to indicate that the Wii U will be any different, even if it does outprocess this generations grown-up rivals.

Well they already made a mighty morphin power rangers movie so lets not pretend this cant happen.
I would actually support(and it hurts me to say this.....) a michael bay power rangers movie. Theres really no way to fuck it up(Im sure hed find some way) but as long as he didnt make swear nonstop or changed the outfits and there was a cool monster and it stayed close to the show formuala....it could be good.

Female exposure......well its not like kimberly wasnt exposing her belly and wearing tight shorts throughout the show. As long as he didnt put her on the sidelines....or fuck anybody...

if there was a movies Id want it to be them first getting the zords, training and taking down a monster.

The sequel....green ranger.

This is pretty much as close to a mature version of Power Rangers you can get.

If I was you though, I would seriously check out the superior anime, most notably the 80's OVA series.

It was the first mature styled anime I ever watched, brilliant stuff.

Dark and gritty? No. But perhaps something with a tone not unlike the first TMNT movie. Plus with the success of the Avengers (superhero team) and Transformers series (giant robots) it's not a completely crazy idea from a studio point of view. I was actually thinking about making a topic like this.
