Dark Souls 2. Its not even a competition. I never gave any notice to ESO. DS2 is one of like 5 games PERIOD that I'm even interested in coming out in the next year or two.

Dark Souls 2
Shantae and the Pirate's Curse
Shovel Knight
Etrian Odyssey Untold
Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy

That is pretty much it.

Dark Souls 2 for me. I might change my mind some day, but as of right now, I'm not interested in TES:O in the slightest.

Dark Souls 2, however... After today, I can't think of a single game I'm looking forward to more.

Dark Souls II.

It's cheaper, and can last me just as many hours.

With every new thing I learn about Elder Scrolls Online it feels more and more like Bethesda may eventually end up saying "Online is noncanonical" and completely ignore it moving ahead with the main franchise.

Zenimax really isn't making me want to play that game.

For me, it's Dark Souls 2. I never played Dark Souls 1 myself, due to the PC port being really bad, or so I heard, but I did watch an LP of it and it seemed fun. I heard Dark Souls 2 is getting a much better PC port right off the bat, so I'm certainly interested in playing the sequel for myself.

I have no interest at all in MMORPGs, so Elder Scrolls online I'm completely indifferent about.
It is only bad if you play with mouse and keyboard. It was their first port though, and they pretty much told everyone straight up it was probably going to be bad heh.

At any rate, if you have a controller you can plug into your computer, you are golden. Only problem besides that is that the game uses peer to peer networking for pvp and co-op, and it can be hell to try and summon someone. Also hackers are somewhat of an issue, not too terrible, but enough to be annoying; so my suggestion is to use the DSxfix and enable automatic backups if you ever come across a hacker(particularly one that can steal your stats). If you are looking to only play offline though, you do not need to worry about any of that.

So if you ever get the inkling to play, I suggest research a bit to see if it is what you truly are looking for, and try it out. If you can forgive the game for it's lack of a proper tutorial(yes the asylum is kind of one, but the game fails to explain several important features), I am sure you will have a great time playing.

I bought Dark Souls off of Steam when it released and I didn't really care for it. The difficulty wasn't an issue but because I found the game to be extremely boring. I love the Elder Scrolls games though because I can play how I want. I don't even have to do the main quest. Most times I play them like a life sim and pretend to be a merchant going from town to town selling my wares but also picking up spices and other things to sell. Other times I pretend I am a black smith that sells his finely forged weapons to the richest warriors that can afford them.

I plan on making a back story for my first ESO character when the game is released.

I'd go with Elder Scrolls Online. Way more game for my money in MMOs, sub fee or not(though fuck the in game store).

I see I'm the vast minority. :D

Elder Scrolls Online has an infinite range of subscription fees and microtransactions. You only have to pay for Dark Souls II once. Dark Souls II wins.

Plus it's not an MMO, and the first Dark Souls was one of my favourite games of all time.

Dark Souls II

I'm really looking forward to it, I've liked what I've seen of it so far and I'm not really a fan of MMOs.

Elder Scrolls Online.

Never really gotten into the dark souls franchise, but I might well give ESO a chance. Possibly. Been a while since I played an MMO, might be time again.

Dark Souls has been near pure gaming bliss for me. It doesn't even matter that it sometimes manages to look like the idiot cousin three times removed from Demon's Souls, it's still an utterly awesome ride all the way.

I like Skyrim. But the combat isn't exactly anywhere as tight and precise as in the D* Souls games, now, is it.

I think I've sucked the fun out of the MMORPG genre by playing, nay, working in the cyberspace, the matrix of Azeroth. I've tried all the ones that followed. They do nothing for me.

I am but a lick away from level 99 in Dragon's Crown and I'll keep playing Dragon's Crown as I will keep playing both Demon's and Dark Souls. These games capture the spirit of the games of old, that special little something that first enticed me and won me over.

The majority of 'other' games looks rather bland and bleak and boring in comparison.

The idea of paying a monthly fee to pay my game translates - in my brain - to the duty to play that game, as I invest in a monthly downpayment of 'fun'. Thing is, when I have to get my daily dose of 'fun', it puts bad images and feelings in my head. I don't like the concept. Also, I know more people that ruined their lives with World of Warcraft than I know people that managed to do the same with drugs or alcohol.

I love the idea of merrily strolling and skipping through the lands of Dark Souls II, even though I think the game name sucks. Should be just D*** Souls. Diamond Souls. Dragon Souls. Depressed Souls. Donkey Souls. Anything but the digit or numeral at the end.

Uninspired cashgrab or carefully constructed game with actual gameplay.
Choices choices...

I'd say that both Dark Souls and Elder Scrolls appeal to the same market. Both are "fantasy" games where you build up one character and adventure through a world with deep lore, collecting loot and engage in singular (non-party) combat.

To me, the main difference between them is that Elder Scrolls games don't try to punish you or want to turn you into a masochist.
That kind of ignores the important aspect that Dark Souls 2 will be a (mostly) single player game where as Elder Scrolls Online would be a MMO.

I'm a big fan of the Elder Scrolls games but I'd be more likely to get Dark Souls 2 because there are other MMOs that I'd rather play. MMOs also tend to be better to start after waiting for a couple months due to lower level zones being less saturated. If it was between Dark Souls 2 and Elder Scrolls VI, then it would be a dilemma.

It's not that bad. We just got pretty much the same thing we already had on PS3/360. With aftermarket patches and a proper controller (I'm partial to the Logitech flavour), I found it to be superiour to the console original.

It's not like we didn't have (severe) technical issues with the Fallouts or Skyrim, but the PC Master Race is a devious one. There's always people not messing with things, trying to break them, but also gifted and spirited individuals coming up with fixes, patches and solutions. You don't get that on consoles a lot.

Tessa bones, anyone?

This would have been a much easier question about a month ago, but now all this talk about subscription fees and micro-payments make it a lot harder.

If I had to choose one, probably ESO. Dark Souls doesn't really appeal to me much. Neither does ESO, but moreso than Dark Souls.

Almost tempted to say ES:O out of sympathy but ahh, fuck that noise.

Dark Souls II is slightly less likely to consume my entire life why I'm supposed to be concentrating on uni work, for a start...

Even with such framing its still an apples and oranges comparison. I would say Dark souls without a second thought. In fact without a first thought. I would have said Dark souls the moment you said Dark so...

Also it does not help that I am NO fan of TES. In fact I almost border on dislike of the franchise. So much the same way me and ToR went. Not liking the source material + MMOs are a failed genre = next to no chance in hell.

I'm not particularly big on the Soul's series, but the recent news of the subscription + micro transactions have soured me a bit on Elder Scrolls Online.

So I choose neither and continue playing Dragon's Crown. : D

I don't play MMOs anymore. Haven't since 07.
I love Elder Scrolls, and Dark Souls, but I simply refuse to play any MMO, so Dark Souls 2 wins.

Dark souls 2, no competition.
I like both game franchises a lot, but after playing Dark souls 1, skyrim feels like a complete joke when it comes to combat and inventory micromanaging.
Compare a sequel that seems to know its strengths and flaunt them (if the you will die even more claims are any indication) compared to one that jumped genre into the untested waters of another, into an over-saturated field at that, as a clone in the same vein as the countless failed clones of that genre, and with the audacity to demand $15 dollars a month when the other choice will likely be $40-60 for lifetime play, and even most of that new genre realized that subscriptions will only ever work for the king?

Yeah, probably chose Dark Sols 2 because I am more a fanboy for it though.
