I got invaded in the Undead Parish and was at a fork where left went into a cathedral of sorts with a huge, hulking armored dude with a mace and tower shield and right was stairs leading down into a forest (I believe). Which path is recommended?
Right, there's a bonfire in that path.

It's dangerous to go alone.

Here, take this.

http://darksouls.wikidot.com/

This wiki is a godsend. I only really used for equipment stats and upgrade routes and stuff I was really unsure/confused about. Don't use it as a walkthrough, just as a point of reference.

Haha, I tried to play this game as the very first RPG where I played all the way through without any help from anywhere or anyone. What a wrong choice that was... Haha, I've been using this and another wiki to help me out here and there in learning about the game. It's been a great help.

Go down those stairs and keep going down that long path. Keep going down and you will see a bonfire.

As for the huge golem dude, that sir is a Black Knight, and you are going to run into them quite a bit, so be prepared. This dude right here is the easiest of all of them to fight, because he is slow as hell. Draw him out into the open (DONT STAY IN THE CATHEDRAL) and keep your distance. His swings take alot of recovery usually, but I suggest watching and learning his attacks because he has a trick up his sleeve.

I would be glad to continue in a discussion of Dark Souls. It is an amazing game and I just can't stop playing even though I want to. It has its flaws, but they will be obvious enough as you progress.

Oh, if you have not picked the Master Key as starting gift, please start again and pick the master key. I shed manly tears when I find out some new player did not pick the master key and think they are having fun. They have no idea what hell awaits them ahead without the master key.

I'm sure I would have been just fine, had I not just been invaded by another person.

I'll have to try again tomorrow. Does online add much in the way of game-changing apart from invasions? I'm not looking for teaming up at all, so would disabling online mode ease my time at all?

No orange help signs, cant summon other people to help, no random ghosts suffering through the same pain as you. Online is a preference. If your aim is to just sit down and finish the game, feel free to turn it off. The true Dark Souls experience is with online enabled, but it has it's own frustrations (invasions being the primary problem).

There are still NPC's you can summon to some boss fights, and you will still get invaded and can invade NPC's. So your not really missing out...

Please continue to post your progress and your thoughts on the game. Always interesting to read.

I got to Sen's castle, and two lizard warriors kicked my ass hard. I like the game, but I got two new AAA games for Christmas to occupy me. Should I pop the disc back in? Is the best yet to come?

I will definitely continue. Sort of in a Let's Play fashion, in a sense. Maybe a summary after every session or something. I think I'll suffer the online some more lol. I do love wondering whether the help is actually help or trolls :p

I took a break for a while and came back and still love the game to death. So, I'd say definitely!

The best bosses are yet to come. And the game is going to get twice as hard after after you finish Sens fortress. Though Sens is a really, really fun place.

As for dealing with Snake Bro's - run right past them.

Why not use all that Humanity to kindle the fire at Firelink Shrine so you can get like 30 flasks or whatever.
I think you need to acquire a special ritual or item to kindle a bonfire past 10 flasks. I'm not entirely sure though.

The Dark Souls wikis are a good source of knowledge but I just learned their weapon stats aren't up to date with the lastest patch. This site has updated weapon stats:
http://darksouls.lljk.net/

If you don't already, you should have a plan for your character. I'm going with a Dex based character so I'm awesome with katanas and bows. I joined the Warriors of the Sunlight covenant and got the Lightning Spear miracle and so I started leveling Faith and became a Faith-based character as well. So, I'm just going to level Vit, End, Dex, and Faith. I would suggest giving yourself combat options as a bow or crossbow are great for pulling enemies 1-by-1 and you should probably be good at at least 1 kind of magic. You can choose to do Pyromancy, which requires no stat investment, you just need to upgrade the Pyromancy Flame.

There's just so many options to build your character. You can actually ignore both Strength and Dexterity if you want and make your weapons do fire, lightning, or magic damage instead. If you focus on Str or Dex, the weapons that scale well with Str/Dex will do a bit more overall damage but not much more than giving them an element and ignoring weapon scaling altogether.

Also, if you are undead, I don't think you can get invaded. I only use humanity to do co-op and to kindle bonfires. But I play online all the time for the messages.

Aye, you need to kill the boss of the Catacombs, Pinwheel. He's actually extremely easy. Compared to what was immediately before him; I hate those goddamn skeleton wheels.

Heh, I always liked luring one of them out to the center and then activating the arrow trap. Once he's dead, it's pretty easy to kill the other one with backstabs.

Woah, woah, wait.

Isn't Humanity also used to Kindle bonfires?

Do that on the ones you go to most first. Thyat way if you die again before you can pick your crap back up, at least you didn't lose it all.

Bonfire and a Blacksmith. Be sure to kindle that fire, if you're like me then you'll be going there quite a bit once you head into the garden. For upgrades or just for the Bonfire.

My problem is that I?m afraid of losing all that I?ve obtained. I hate dying in games, and that makes this game ridiculously difficult for me. It took me so long the first time just to get to the tower as it was.
In case you havent figured it out by now, you only loose the unspent souls you have on hand when you die, and those can be reclaimed if you can get back to where you dropped them. Best way to not lose unspent souls is to spend them.

I also run into the problem of needing to discover everything in an area before moving on. That includes killing every enemy. Including the optional sub-bosses (black knight, dude with dragon-tooth hammer)
Youre going to love The Great Hollow, other than that theres no problem with trying to explore everything as the game is about twice as long compared to when you dont.

Yes, Bandai Games had the good sense to save the real fun for the later levels.

Grinding is a waste of time. Having 20 or 200 health more is not really going to help you when Ornstein is blowing 90% of your HP away in a single hit. Grinding takes way too long and your probably going to make a new account and go through they game in less than than a quarter of the time it took you on your first time around.

Besides, if you NEED to grind, there are some really buggy ways to do it so do it those ways and save your energy for the actual challenges in the game.

You could just take my philosophy.

I got to play when I was visiting home over Christmas break. It's going to be a while yet before I can afford the game myself, but I started there just to try it. (and LOVED it BTW) I made the highest STR class available and pumped every single soul into STR.... and one in DEX because I needed 10 DEX for a lot of good weapons. I went in with no knowledge of things and just started doing stupid stuff to see what happens. Like pumping everything into STR. Going all-out attack is surprisingly a robust strategy, even if you sometimes end up at a disadvantage at a distance. I was able to murder the dark knights in two power attacks. I could take down almost every enemy in one hit. Bosses didn't stand a chance. I died super fast if I let myself get hit, but I was RAISED on games that killed me faster and with less apology than this.
Monster Hunter taught me half the skills I applied here, and it worked fantastically. Play it safe at first. Block a lot- it's super easy to survive that way unless they can break your guard. Learn their patterns until you think you're ready to start trying to land some hits. Don't be afraid to take your time. But when things get scary, don't be afraid to jump into the fray. This game is no more punishing than Zelda 2. It's less punishing than Monster Hunter by a long shot. Whatever you lose, you can fairly easily get back. When it comes down to it, the most important things in the game can only be lost through your own stupidity- weapons and armor breaking, and skill failing you. When you fail, learn from that to become stronger.

Also put all your souls into upgrading weapons and damage. You'll be unstoppable. Until something hits you. xD
