July 4th - All Americans celebrate my birthday.
Thank you America, I didn't know I meant that much to you!
Oh dear, I told myself I wasn't going to cry...

January 24th-one of the best Roman emperors, Hadrian, was born, and one of the worst, Caligula, was killed by his own men.

Too bad I'm not American. :(
Don't feel bad. We may have said we were a sovereign nation on that day, but we had a few more years of war before that would actually become the case.

Most interesting to me:

1859 ? A geomagnetic storm causes the Aurora Borealis to shine so brightly that it is seen clearly over parts of USA, Europe, and even as far away as Japan.

Actually happened on the day of my birth:

1990 ? The Plainfield Tornado: an F5 tornado hits in Plainfield, Illinois, and Joliet, Illinois, killing 28 people

Edit: Oh yeah, can't forget this
2005 ? Hurricane Katrina begins to make landfall in Louisiana and Mississippi in the afternoon, and brings the most severe damage to Slidell and New Orleans.

1942 - World War II: The Fall of Singapore, "About 80,000 Indian, United Kingdom and Australian soldiers become prisoners of war, the largest surrender of British-led military personnel in history."

1944 - World War II: The assault on Monte Cassino, Italy, begins.

2005 - YouTube, the Internet site on which videos may be shared and viewed by others, is launched in the United States. (Yay!)

Lots of interesting things for me, but the two that really stuck out to me are:

1556: The deadliest earthquake in history, the Shaanxi earthquake, hits Shaanxi province, China. The death toll may have been as high as 830,000.

and

1997: Antonis Daglis, a 23-year-old Greek truck driver is sentenced to thirteen consecutive life sentences, plus 25 years for the serial slayings of three women and the attempted murder of six others.
