Maybe they aren't trying to be comedic? Maybe they genuinely want Harley Quinn to kill herself for some reason.
dont think so, she's getting her own ongoing series starting November. the main character dying would be an.. unorthodox way to start to say the least. then again. she's an unorthadox character...

very possible it may start with her attempting suicide and failing.

At this point DC's inability to treat its female characters with a shred of respect post-relaunch seems less like a succession of disconnected bad creative decisions and more like a mission statement.
It's Harley-Insane-in-the-Brain-Quinn.

The gay marriage thing with Batwoman was a shitty move and DC deserves every bit of backlash and outrage they've been getting for it, but this is in character. Considering the context, the fact that this isn't any random woman, but specifically Harley Quinn, I do not see a controversy here.

Edit: Oh shit, I re-read that description, and they didn't specify a need to be water in that bathtub. What's worrying is how in character that would be from Harley.
Ehm...water being there really shouldn't need to be specified, since you kind of need it if you want to kill yourself by dropping a plugged-in household appliance into the bathtub....

Captcha: Skynet knows.

See, even Skynet knows that!

Hence why I mentioned the "in character" part. Somehow I'd see it as fitting for a nutjob like her to not try to kill herself by electrocution, but perhaps by blunt force trauma by getting hit on the head too many times by falling toasters.

Eh, I'm way overthinking this.

Actually no, you're making a good point. That would be completely in-character for her too >.> And there's bound to be some who are going to take it that way, I bet. So yeah, in the end, "bathtub full of water" would be a better idea to specify.

Huh, how come I didn't think of that.

Jesus... There are plenty of situations that make me feel annoyed or angry when it comes to how things are portrayed or treated in various forms of media. But it's fairly rare that something makes me feel physically sick.

I mean Jesus fucking Christ, this goes beyond "it gives the wrong impression" or "it's a problematic trope that reinforces stereotpyes" or anything like that. This is just fucking psychotic. I'm of the belief that while anything can potentially be funny, even siubjects like suicide, anyone who wants to make jokes about that kind of thing needs to be prepared for the fact that it's going to be an uphill struggle. And if the joke then falls flat and insults people, the person making the joke has no one to blame but themselves for bringing it up in the first place. But in this situation there is no joke. It's just suicide. Naked suicide. But that's okay because it's Harley Quinn, so therefore it's funny. And come to think of it she's not even going to be in costume, so that makes it even less cartoony and more... Yuch. I really don't want to think about this any more.
So how much do you actually know about harley quinn? This actually seems quite in character , and she didn't always have the costume , she was a normal person beforehand.

i really hate this, the romantization of suicide in pop culture is pretty bad as it is. but the only reason to specify naked is to try and grab a sexual reaction. and anyone who can hold those two concepts in their head together and conect them in any way is in need of help. i can see my way to creating a panel like this as part of an overarcing story, but not in a comedic way and certainly not in a "hey lets get the fans involved" kind of way. seriously what happened since the new 52 did dc just go insane i liked alot of geoff johns stories leading up to this but now everything seems just wrong.

... I am not outraged by this. The lesbian wedding thing was more outrage inducing.

This hits me differently, and on two fronts.

1) Sexualizing suicide... DC, you make me sad. And you make me never ever want to buy any of your products.

2) Harley committing suicide... WHY?! She was the best thing about Batman (and it is a crime that she has appeared in ZERO Batman movies!) and you want people to draw her committing suicide? What the fuck, DC? Even if you aren't killing her off (which, according to the poster above who said she's getting her own series, I can assume is true) why would you even imply that?

Number 2 is my stronger reaction. Why do people always kill off my favorite character? Fuck you DC for even implying that you're getting rid of Harley Quinn!

In the words of the 10th Doctor, "What?"

Also why is Harley committing Suicide? And why are they even killing her off? She's probably one of the reasons DC still has as many readers as they do.

I think this is just a publicity stunt. It can?t be a coincidence that this comes on the eve of National Suicide Prevention Week. DC can?t be that sexist or insensitive; they just want to kick up a shitstorm so they?ll be relevant again, since comic sales are dropping and people care more about the films based on their decades-old characters than the actual shitty storylines cranked out in the comics themselves.

But hey, this is the same company that canonised an Elseworlds tale where Alan Moore had the Joker permanently cripple Barbara Gordon (until the New 52 reboot, of course), just because they wanted to end the character of Batgirl, while superheroes like Superman and Batman can be killed but return not long afterwards like nothing ever happened.

Seriously, who even buys DC?s comics anymore? The biggest thing I even know about the Batwoman comics is that she?s lesbian, which was apparently ?a big thing?, but the editors were too pussy to let her get married. After all, everyone knows that a naked femme fatale killing herself in a bathtub is way more titillating that some dyke wedding, right?

I'm still kind of annoyed about the 'No lesbian marriage' thing so I don't really like what DC are doing here. But I get the feeling that context is going to be important for this. Still, it seems an odd thing to get fan participation on. Maybe the artists involved in the rest of the comic refused to draw it or something?

Maybe DC have the same PR guys as Microsoft?

Well first off maybe stop trying get views by sesationalizm?

I have to say, its a bit in character for Quinn, but its really an asshole of a contest. It is kinda disgusting. If they were going to actually have a drawing contest of any kind I would think it would be something less... disturbing. Someone in the thread I think got it right though, its gotta be a publicity stunt because of the week coming up.

About the gay marriage thing... seriously, get off of it. It wasnt because they were gay.

To reiterate: Were NEVER told they could not marry because of gay marriage. AT ALL --

I've just been told that threats of violence have been issued toward individuals at DC comics. This is unacceptable. It needs to stop now.

DC Comics released a comment saying: "As acknowledged by the creators involved, the editorial differences with the writers of Batwoman had nothing to do with the sexual orientation of the character."

DC is having a bad time lately. Yesterday Batwoman's authors quit because they couldn't show her lesbian marriage. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/127492-Lesbian-Marriage-Too-Tough-For-Batwoman-Authors-Leave] Apparently, DC decided to distract us from that shitstorm with another: They want naked pictures of Harley Quinn killing herself.

Seriously, that's a contest they're running. [http://www.dailydot.com/fandom/dc-comics-kill-naked-harley-quinn-contest/] The winner gets an opportunity to contribute to an upcoming comic. You need to submit 4 pictures [http://www.dccomics.com/node/305151], including "trying to get hit by lightning" and "wearing clothes made of chicken to get alligators to eat her". It's the last one that's got people really upset:

Harley sitting naked in a bathtub with toasters, blow dryers, blenders, appliances all dangling above the bathtub and she has a cord that will release them all. We are watching the moment before the inevitable death. Her expression is one of ?oh well, guess that?s it for me? and she has resigned herself to the moment that is going to happen.

Naturally, people are pissed [http://jezebel.com/dc-comics-contest-draw-a-naked-woman-committing-suicid-1265537616]. There are all sorts of protests about how this is sexualizing suicide and making it seem attractive, about how it would never be done with a male character, etc.

I'm just here to report the news; I have no words that can describe what I feel at hearing this. How about you, Escapists?

EDIT: By the way, (United States) National Suicide Prevention Week starts tomorrow.
This comes to mind.

Sigh...I like Harley as a character, very realistic portrayal of a woman in serious need of effective mental help to escape a bad relationship without being too preachy/overly sensitive about it.

Whaaaat the fuck? This is a thing that's happening? It's like DC is run by monkeys. Not just any monkeys; monkeys that were cast out by other monkeys for being too stupid.

Who's on quality control here? Did their lawyers seriously give this the go ahead?

DC... Wait, is this their way of saying they're committing suicide...? Driving their company into the ground?

This.

Even if ya take away the hole "make her suicide sexy thing", it's still in unbelievable bad taste to make a joke out of someone trying to commit suicide. Especially near National Suicide Prevention Week's start.

It's only made worse when we have no context for why she would be doing this. Though, I doubt that would make it any better. To people saying that it's just Harley's character, sorry I'm not buying it.
Part of the reason it's so weird is that I don't really see her trying to kill herself like this.
If she was going to do it, I'd think she would be more likely to go out trying to pull off one last grand "prank" on Gotham City.

Gee, I did not realise that. I thought that she had the costume ever since she was born. I thought she had plopped out of the womb in a dinky little baby version of her costume and then it had grown with her ever since.

Anyway, I can't claim to be an expert about Harley Quinn, but I know her backstory as Harleen Quinzel PHD, getting seduced by the Joker while trying to give him therapy, ending up in an abusive relationship with him, the on-off thing with Poison Ivy... And suicidal tendencies don't really seem all that in character for her. I'm not certain on that she's never done it before and I can't google it since all the links I got are on the subject we're currently discussing, but she seems far too optimistic for that. Again, if I'm wrong here and she has a history of it then I will admit that it's in character but it's not something I've seen before.

Because if not, what is the reasoning for her doing this, how is it in character? And for the sake of my sanity please don't say "Because she's insane", because that just smacks of lazy writing. Having said that, maybe there is a very good reason for her actions. I'm not going to dismiss that possibility, I just wish that "there is potentially a good explanation, but we haven't given it" would stop being used as an excuse equal to "there is a good explanation, and this is it."

Anyway. Whether or not it's in character makes no difference to how creepy the instruction of "Draw a woman committing suicide in a realistic (albeit over the top) manner, and make sure she's naked" is. Some people have said that she's in a bath, therefore it's obvious she'd be naked. I'd respond to that by saying that it would also be obvious that the bath would be full of water, but they didn't specify that. It's entirely possible that someone attempting to kill themselves in that manner could be clothed; after all, what reason do they have not to be? Their clothes will get wet? Well that's just terrible. But out of all the things that you might take for granted one way or another, they specifically say that she has to be naked.

EDIT: Just remembered to say that I completely forgot about the New 52 changes while I was writing this post, so maybe they do make it completely in character (they certainly change how much of a difference there is between naked and in costume). But that's sidetracking, really.

This is stupid.

I can see how suicide can be used in comedy. Especially if it's Harley, and it's really over-the-top (like the chicken-suit), but making this a contest?

Just seems really dumb and in bad taste. That description doesn't sound funny. 'she has resigned herself to the moment that is going to happen.' sounds positively hilarious.

It's kinda sad how I'm not surprised at the 'naked' part anymore.

That's because Joker can't do sexy, sexy male clown does not exist. Though I'm sure somebody somewhere in the world does get off to them anyway, but in general.

[sarcasm] Also Harley Quinn is Bisexual this is obvious plan to kill off more non-hetro characters. [/sarcasm]

I like sexy pictures of Harley Quinn, especially with Ivy&/Catwoman.

I like dark Gothic/(fake)suicide pictures.

So my only complaint will be if they don't put all the pictures up in an online gallery, I want to see them.
