The sixth game in the Dead or Alive series has been announced for PC, Xbox One and PS4. It currently has an Early 2019 release date. It features 4k graphics, new stages, improved training mode, a new but unrevealed Solo mode and several new systems including a Super/Ultra meter similar to those seen in Street Fighter or Guilty Gear which allows the performance of Break Rushes/Break Holds, as well as borrowing a simple "Autocombo" feature from games like Marvel vs. Capcom or Dragonball Fighter Z, with each character having one combo that can be performed by pressing one button only, called a "Fatal Rush". However this combo still is affected by the normal rules of the game and can still be countered, held or sidestepped and leaves you vulnerable to whiff punishing.

Subjective Opinion begins here!

The new gameplay features sound great, and though not available in the current demo played by the interviewers the stages are apparently being designed to have a decent set of competitive AND whacky stages like previous games, as opposed to DoA5's mostly tame stages. Fatal Rush sounds like something that will help new players, but easily and heavily punished by more experienced players.

There is ONE dark cloud though.

Shimbori, the game's design director, has gone ahead and stated that the female characters have deliberately had their sexual characteristics reduced and downplayed AGAIN, instead saying that he wanted to make "a cool and mature game".

The two females feature in the trailer and screenshots, Kasumi and Helena, have noticeably smaller proportions and their default outfits appear to be far more modest.

He has attempted to do this twice before; both in Ninja Gaiden 3 and Dead or Alive 5; and both times fan outcry made Team Ninja backtrack. One thing DoA players had seemed to agree on was that DoA5 represented the best compromise; the female characters were no longer as ridiculous as say, DoA 4/3 and looked far more natural/realistic, but maintained familiar looks and appeal that they had before.

My opinion is probably already guessed by a few people but...why?

This change appeals to no one, and only makes dedicated fans upset. Sex appeal/extremely hot women and DoA go hand-in-hand; a DoA with diminished sex appeal is akin to Street Fighter with no fireballs or Tekken without lightning punches and ridiculous hair - it's part and parcel of the series.

What's ironic is that by trying to lessen the focus on the sexiness to appeal to a broader base...they leave the door open to Soul Caliber and Tekken and other games.

I don't care about the fanservice either way. If they downplay it, so what? As long as the gameplay is fun, which it most likely is, I have no problems. DOA has certainly come a long way. Still competing with the best. I am just happy that fighting games have been getting more recognition again since 2014. We got DOA6, Soul Calibur 6, and Fighting Layer EX. That's three major fighting games coming out in 2019.

There wasn't enough footage from the teaser to really tell how far they've pulled back on the curvy bits, but yeah the series has no business appealing to cries of sexism. Sex appeal has been intrinsic to it from the beginning.

Cool. It's the only fighting game I could get into. It actually makes me practice and work on combos.

They said the same thing when DOA5 came out, about toning down the fanservice. And then they flooded it with sexy outfits. Just give them time and they will go back to old ways.

Don't you buy a fighting game for the mechanics of the game rather than to ogle characters' jiggly bits? Come on now, you haven't been 12 for a long time now.

You know, I'm crap at Dead or Alive, I could never get my head in the zone for the way its mechanics worked. But if they have their complete roster available at launch and I unlock them by playing the game I may just buy it out of principle just to flip the bird at Namco for paywalling off Tekken 7's roster.

Fucked up FGC weirdoes buy fighting games for 'mechanics' ('cus I'll sure as hell bet you didn't mean stuff like the execution of game modes). The type that tells you you play figthing games wrong for not spending 20 hours in the lab practicing mixups.

Normal people buy fighting games to have fun, either with casual couch versus or playing SP. Which is why Netherrealm's fighters are currently the only ones that sell incredibly well, and sell more with each sequel. (MKX selling like 7 mill copies) Only company that puts in effort for casuals as opposed to half assed trash you see stuff like SFV, MvCI, T7 or FighterZ. But those do make a show of pandering to the E-sports pissbabies.

So if it's through tata's that some derive their enjoyment, let 'em fucking have it. DoA is the only one that crowd gets to have to themselves. Not anymore I guess.

I do like the "me am so a-dult look at me scoff at naughty bits". That's like the 100 year old trope of faux maturity.

If FEXL is a sign of recognition, the genre is on its deathbed. Thankfully, it's irrelevant. So when it flops it'll only kill Arika.
Ok, what do you have against Akira? They didn't make the best games, but they were fun. Though Steet Figter EX 3 can suck a huge dick. The only good thing about that game is the soundtrack. Especially Sakura's theme. Have you even tried playing the demo? I look forward this game.

"What's wrong with taking out/turning down the sex appeal and bodies in DoA?"

Well, to answer, let me ask a question in return;

"What's wrong with taking out/turning down the violence and gore in Mortal Kombat?"

"What's wrong with taking out the weapons in Soul Caliber?"

A fighting game's visual appearance, style, gimmick etc. is just as important as it's core mechanics - it defines the game just as much if not more so than than it's other features. DoA without the noticeably curvy ladies and a lot of revealing outfits is still a decent fighting game...but a bland and boring one. Just as MK would be without it's gore and fatalities.

Pretty much this. They know the people who play it for teh boobies will be happy to shell out that 2.99 per fanservice outfit for their chosen girl.

Bass was always my main for that franchise anyway, and his Big Van Vader costume was free.

They're just doing this in order to sell well in the first couple of months. And then they will release a bunch of ecchi outfits.

It's not just costumes.

Someone on Twitter did a comparison - I'll try to find the tweet but I suck at Twitter - and the two females they showed have noticeably smaller bodies as well. Particularly Helena looks like she went from a High C/D cup all the way down to B, and her legs/butt are a lot smaller too.

I think most fans could maybe deal with having less skimpy outfits overall, but the possibility that they're going to reduce or eliminate the looks of the characters we've loved for years now just for the sake trying to look "cool and mature" is what gets us angry.

Yeah, I've seen some of the comparisons, but I don't care that much about it. Most of the girls literally had the same body model, and I would like some diversity in body types.

We have to wait and see on how the rest of the girls will look.

Pretty much everyone fighting game has some sort of fan service meanwhile I can't tell you a mainstream fighting game with heavy gore or weapon use that isn't MK or Soulcalibur.

Perhaps it's just me, but seeing the upping of the violence in DoA is also kind of...weird? Disturbing? It's odd seeing the level of detail on such hard hits that they've been showing, on both guys and girls. It feels out of place in DoA.

Yeah, they're appealing to westerners.
