Multiplayer having no weight is a good thing. It is not a valueable mode of play.

I always take 2 off everything IGN reviews and will be doing so here.

Just wait for a review from the Escapist. Everyone knows/suspects that large game sites (like IGN and Gamespot) get payed for reviews by the AAA companies. Too much money goes into the big titles for publishers to risk their success to reviews. ;)

IGN is not a reputable source for anything at all.
Bullshit. They might get paid to favor some games over others, but for the most part their reporting seems to be spot on. It's the community that comments on most of their stories that's full of fucktards.

You just don't like the popular websites, do you? IGN vs. Gamespot, it's just like PS3 vs. 360, completely stupid arguments.
I agree somewhat. IGN and Game Informer have great access so their news reports and interviews are often great. Their reviews are just decent, but their opinion articles are generally terrible.
Decent? 9's the same score they gave Other M. Which they praised for its story.
I don't really care about the number they slap on a game. And I said decent, not great. They drop the ball sometimes (their gushing Fable 2 review comes to mind), but also align with my opinion enough that I can't honestly call them terrible. I haven't played Other M yet, so I can't speak to that.

That said, I don't really go to them for reviews. Game Informer and IGN are my main gaming news sources, while Destructoid, Giant Bomb, and Eurogamer are my main review sources.

OP: What does it matter if it's survival horror or a cover-based shooter? A fun game is a fun game, no matter what genre it's shoehorned into, and it was touted to be a scary game in the first place. Whether it is or not doesn't really matter. Is it fun? Maybe. That's the IGN reviewer's (possibly paid for) opinion.

When did you have a chance to play it, by the way?
No, IGN are just terrible. Just look at this crap: http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/articles/107/1070909p1.html
Did you like that game? Apparently the reviewer didn't. I only skimmed over it a bit, but it seemed to briefly summarize what was good and bad about the game in the opinion of the reviewer. Which is kind of what a review of any sort is supposed to be.
Yeah, I do, but that's not the reason. They say it's bad in almost every single way, pretty much, which is wrong. The reviewer doesn't understand satire. And saying the graphics are the worst on the 360 is a joke, even if the rest of the review is credible to some people.

wish i could just embed the video, but it wont let me get the link.
anyways, i really dont think it deserved such high praise (such as claiming it to be the "best survival horror game of our generation). It doesnt look like survival horror at all, just gears of war with laser guns and zombie-babies.

besides that, im surprised it didnt get a lower score for having bad multiplayer, dont most mainstream reviewers put that as having a LOT of weight in their reviews? well, it looked like a left 4 dead rip-off anyways.

but thats just my opinion, what do you guys think of this?

EDIT: Yeah, i havent played the game yet, both because its not out and because when it does i wont play it because i didnt like the first (i like saving money for good games, thats all). ill give it a chance to surprise me, but ill let my brother buy it first since he's into corporate cash-ins (Cash-In of Duty anyone?). I mostly take issue with the "best survival horror game of our generation" line.
I take it you also like fighting the Man in other ways, eh? You sound like one of those goth kids from South Park. Not every sequel is a cash-in, and if they're done well, then who cares? A good game is a good game. What, is Dragon Age II also a cash-in?

Reviewers only put value on multiplayer when multiplayer is a very large part of the game (like the Call of Duty or Battlefield series). Dead Space is primarily a single-player game, and so reviewers don't put all that much stock in the multiplayer. It also depends on how much the multiplayer is hyped. For Call of Duty, the multiplayer was hyped up a whole lot, so that is what most reviewers based their reviews the game on. For Dead Space, and Dead Space 2, the single player is what is hyped up, so reviewers will focus on that more than the multiplayer.

Are you sure you played the first one? It was pretty darn good, although the easy difficulty made it slightly less fun. Also, I don't know where you get Gears of War from. The game in no way resembles Gears of War. Is it because they have guns? Lots of games have guns in them. Is it the third person perspective? Lots of games do that. There's no cover-based gameplay, so it couldn't be that. Left 4 Dead rip-off? Did you play Left 4 Dead? They are only related in the fact that they are part of the same genre. Maybe if you played the games (there's such a thing as renting, you know) instead of simply going on about how mainstream they are (Hipster Kitty whined about mainstream videogames before everyone else did), you might enjoy something.

I doubt that paying for good reviews with cash in brown envelopes is that common but the whole review business is a game and the fact that escapist now gives games scores, show ads for games, talk to pr and are listed on metacritic means they are playing the same game as IGN.

From metacritic:
The Escapist
81 Games
Average review score: 77
On average, this publication grades
3 points higher than other publications.

IGN
7,497 Games
Average review score: 68
On average, this publication grades
6 points lower than other publications.

Ah, classic Escapist. Can't make a thread calling into question the authenticity of a rating bestowed upon a survival-horror game without making a dig at Call of Duty/Halo in the same post.

woah there, no need to troll me. i did play the first one and found it to be a gears of war rip-off because of the feel of the game. i wasnt scared by it, i was just looking for the next big gun to make big explosions and big chunks of bodies fly everywhere. that makes it kind of fail as a "survival horror" game. but as an action game it also falls flat because the action isnt that impressive.

when i think "action" i think Prototype or Mass Effect. when i think "horror" i think Silent Hill 2 or Amnesia: Dark Descent. Dead Space doesnt do either very well (when i played it).

and besides that, i consider Dead Space a cash-in because it just seems like more of the same kind of churned out crap that the first one was. besides, who gives a game like Dead Space a Wii port? people who want to make a quick buck, that's who.

im not against "mainstream" games or sequels as you seem to think. my favorite games?
Mass Effect 2
Dead Rising 2
Just Cause 2
Rock Band 2 (love this to death! :D)
Prototype
Crackdown 2
Halo: Combat Evolved
Starcraft
Warcraft 3
Fable 1&2 (still have yet to buy 3)
Red Dead Redemption
Saints Row 2

seriously, i could go on here, and if you look at ALL of my past posts you'll see that im not bullshitting you on any of those above mentioned games.

and the left 4 dead rip-off reference? that was in reference to its multiplayer, which pits 4 human players (like Left 4 Dead) against 4 "undead" players (like Left 4 Dead) who have to survive against the undead players who are given various classes to play as (like Left 4 Dead).

get your facts straight before you start accusing people of being "Hipsters".

9.0 + admitting to bad average multi-player + history of paid reviews + overall lack of subtlety in the franchise = suspicion.

Gaming scores are stupid, period.

I honestly haven't played any good survival horror game this generation, so that claim might actually hold some water.

You've not played the game, your opinion is invalid.
You don't have to play this game to realise it's a run n gun game with monster-jump-out-of-the-closet elements, not a horror.

If IGN say this is the best horror game of its generation, and consider it near perfect in that field, then anyone such as the OP has the right to at least be dubious.

What really bugged me in Dead Space (even though I liked it), was that I couldn't get rid of the feeling that I would soon run into a Big Daddy.

However, I'm looking forward to Dead Space 2. Even with the issues in the first, I still thought it was rather nice survival horror, although I would take away that static ability. It doesn't do any good for the "horror" when you can just freeze all enemies that surprise you.
