Well it was a predictable move given the general direction of the gaming industry in this day and age and the pressure to make a safe game that will sell good enough to keep the dev in business.
It also has to be said that working for EA is like a Sword of Damocles. You may get a lot of funding but if the sales are even slightly poor you're completely screwed so as a dev you want to make sure you get that teenage COD/Gears crowd in the bag to ensure the most sales possible and to please the guys at EA who want to know their investment will pay off.
I'm of the opinion that gaming as we know it will collapse within the 3/4 years as costs begin to rise further with publishers still wanting their huge slice and gamers not being able to afford the full experience. When a game can sell over a million copies and put the dev out of business it's a broken business model that needs to be revamped.
I'm currently working a full time job and it's becoming more and more apparent that I can't afford to buy lots of AAA titles and keep myself alive. Due to this, I only seem to buy games that have become very cheap (due to pre-owned which will becoming a thing of the past next gen) or show signs of something compelling to play (which most shooters fail at now, still fun but not original and exciting)
