How come somebody that has never played a Dead Space game is making a huge rant about it? Honestly- if you've never interacted with the franchise, why would you even care about this game enough to make a multi-paragraph thread about it? Dead Space 1 was great, Dead Space 2 was even better. Yeah- it sucks that Dead Space 3 is going to be more "guns a-blazin'", but it's not like you're missing out on another dead space game or losing an opportunity of more survival horror because you never played the first two games in the first place.

Seriously, what the fuck?

And the problem with micro-transactions? There's nothing wrong with them. Want to know why they exist? Because people use them. I'm sure you've been paying attention to the gaming news and seeing how once or twice a month there have been layoffs, developers shutting down, the war on used games continues, etc. If the gaming companies want another source of income, which is entirely optional to the consumer, then more power to them. Let's keep the game companies in business. Micro-transactions literally have zero impact on how you play a game if you choose not to use them. You just ignore them, and play like normal. You play as if they don't exist, it's not like they are going to purposely fuck you over if you choose to not use them.

And to Leoofmoon:

Good God if I ever needed another solid reason to never bother reading a post by someone with a pony as an avatar, there it fucking is.
I agree with you that the optional micro-transactions do not have really anything wrong with them on a business standpoint. It gives an optional way for a player to get extra stuff. I do think if it is badly implemented, it could kill the difficulty balance in the game, but I suppose that choice is up to the player if they want to do that.

As for Leoofmoon, well...I agreed with everything he has said thus far, except for his remark on the souls series being a survival horror. I love dark souls, but it certainly is not survival horror. Most enemies can kill you if you arnt careful yes, and there is great atmosphere, just not the right kind for a horror game. These things a horror game does not make. You need to actually be scared of going around the next corner, not just tense(as dark souls tends to make people feel their first time around).

Regarding the pony avatar remark...well if there was a way to judge idiots, trolls, and imbeciles by just their avatar, it would be a godsend; unfortunately we have to rely on what they say, and the content of their character rather than just looking out for ponies or dinosaurs or whatever.

THEY WERENT SCARY don't get me wrong..they were bloody great but they were "Aliens" not "Alien" and you know what? thats fine, they have other thngs going for them (frantic combat, atmosphere)
Exactly this. The Dead Space games were never really scary. It was more that they were suspenseful and had a great atmosphere. They were never on the level of say Silent Hill 2 or Amnesia in terms of being scary. Isaac is simply too powerful and capable so it doesn't really fit into the survival horror genre.

Dead Space 3 is a success in my mind as long as they keep that great atmosphere and suspense intact.

I'm still cautious because...you know EA..."third installment" also isnt the frozen setting reminicant of The Thing?

I'm not one for long posts so I'll try sum it up fast.
I judge games on how much I enjoy them. Not if the story was amazing, or if I like/hate the publisher or developer. I couldn't care less if it was without a doubt a complete cash grab, something they made in 2 weeks just to make money fast. If its fun, its good.
So I don't see how you can say whether a game is good or not based on stuff that isn't gameplay. A publisher, motive, development period, trailer or (Lack of)original ideas don't necessarily make a game good or bad.

Well The Thing was awesome so hopefully Visceral can manage to do something great with the setting. They've made two great games so far so I'll give em the benefit of the doubt.

It was never survival horror, it was a action zombie game.
my thoughts, exactly. although, i would label it "action horror".

sad thing is, Dead Space 3 seems to have dropped the horror element almost entirely. ive seen footage of the demo, and all it was was a few jump scares, and endless enemies. the more enemies you throw at the player, the more used to fighting them he will be. it will cease to be scary.

also, the majority of the demo took place outside, in the daytime. definitely not the setting i picture in my head when i think of horror.

There were two "The Things" Remember? There was only one good one.
Technically three.

"The Thing from Another World" (1951) was also based on the same short story ("Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell Jr.) as "The Thing (1982) and "The Thing" (2011). It's... alright. One of the better examples of 50's SciFi, but Carpenter's '82 adaptation is still the best.

Buy more indie games? You know the old "vote with your wallet" mantra, well if nothing seems good to you anymore then don't buy it. I reached that point a few years ago and now my yearly consumption of games is maybe 2-3 AAA titles a year; the rest is quality indie stuff I bought on Steam. I'm not doing it as some kind of "fuck the man" campaign either, my tastes changed (or rather my tastes were no longer considered profitable) so I began giving money to the people who make games I know I'll enjoy.

You know what was a fun game I just played recently? The Tiny Bang Story. It's a glorified eye-spy with some puzzles thrown into the mix, but I can honestly say that I enjoyed it and got more than my money's worth out of it.

While that seems like a backhanded compliment at best, I am most certainly, a fiction writer.
Actually I just wish more people put their energy into creative efforts. Actually I should probably go do something constructive too...

I wouldn't think using the broad term gamer would be any less silly, personal grumble though.

Once something is done by as many people as gaming is I stop seeing it as a "group of people".

Similar to how I don't say "Oh what an asshole, water drinkers amirite?!"

How many nails are we up to now? 68 or something?

EA will find a way to live on. It is perpetuated by the devil's own bank.

Well that's all fine and dandy, but what do us fans of Dead Space get from all this? I loved Dead Space 1, and although Dead Space 2 wasn't nearly as scary it improved on the first in basically ever other way.

I'm not EA's biggest fan either, but I genuinely loved the DS series. Am I meant to not buy it and pass up the opportunity to not enjoy myself to support your crusade against the big bad videogame company?

I found the caps-lock rage over them making the game more shooter oriented pretty funny. Deadspace was always about shooting. And not just unloading large amounts of ammunition into a baddie and going for head shots, it implemented a whole new way of looking at your enemy in that dismemberment did the most damage. Also the orientation of your gun to perform said dismemberment's was new and interesting as well. If they up the number of monsters I'm not going to complain, as long as they throw in some creepy ass set pieces I will be happy.

Like others suggested play the fucking game before you go batshit over its newest installment. It really sounds like this is more of a vent about EA than about them screwing up deadspace

I enjoyed the hell out of both games myself and it was the atmosphere that made the game creepy it never scared the shit out of me but they are certainly creepy as fuck. The gorram bathrooms... I too am optimistic for DS3 but again EA's track record comes to mind.

I will Buy DeadSpace 3 and while I think the co op may lessen the creepy factor I will give it a shot after going through on my own first.

Issac has never been light on his feet, and you expect him to be quick in the middle of a blizzard? So holding a trigger to run is bad design? 0_o Is it not done that way in practically every other shooter?
/Facepalm You know that specifically targeting a limb dismembers it and its not random right? Its kinda been Deadspace's thing.

What do you write?

OT: I am rather sickened by the idea of micro-transactions in a shooter that is primarily single player. I will reserve my judgement though, perhaps the weapons you find and craft in the game are the same ones that you will use in multi-player (combined with their stance on forced implementation of multi-player). With EA's history of cash grabs I do not expect it to be implemented well though. I imagine that they will design the game with the intent of selling these crafting materials and try to make the materials sparse as possible through out the game to force you into purchasing said items. Either way I am interested to see how it turns out.

ok you didnt play dead space or dead space 2 right? theres your porblem right there

on the surface DS3 looks like its being given the "EA triple A" treatment....but from what Ive seen and a fan of the series i'm actually cautionsly optimistic, this co-op may not be the death of it

in other words it pays to know what your talking about before you rant
You know... call me crazy, but I don't see why somethings particular success at fitting in with its genre matters much. The point is that its literally becoming every other popular game ever for the sole reason of selling more copies. I sincerely believe that this series is losing its identity due to EA's demands on Visceral.

I ain't judging shit about the series or the game. The fact is that whatever it used to be isn't going to be what the new one is, not for the fact that the developers or the creative people behind it want it to be, but because EA wants to push five million copies. That sort of demand completely wrecks the possibility of a uniquely creative game.

Perhaps its always been an Action-Survival game, as opposed to horror. So what? Whatever it is is being white washed for the sole purpose of selling this thing to as many people as possible. While selling should certainly be a goal in every games head, wouldn't you much rather see a new IP succeed due to original ideas and gameplay innovation as opposed to because it has all the features every Call of Duty game has?

Perhaps my post was a little ranty and angry, but I'm trying to make a point about this. This isn't going to stop with Dead Space 3 (hell it didn't start with it).

Besides that five million copies? Why? That should not be a demand on a game. If you don't think its going to sell five million copies then don't give three hundred million dollars to make the game, give them a realistic budget. That's the main issue really. They're spending too much on a game that is doomed to fail. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe the game is fun and great and fantastic, I still believe you are turning wine into water, and whatever success it may have, it won't be as a Dead Space game, but as some sort of monster brethren of what used to be and what everything else is.

I don't care that EA has absurd demands. What bothers me is this nonsense about being able to play the game by cursing at it. The media keeps claiming that videogames make people violent and this only goes to prove them right by making violence a viable method of playing our games. I sincerely hope this stops at Dead Space 3 because my face would be flat due to the number of facepalms I'd perform before we hit 2014.
Okay, I'm calling bullshit on this. We've all cursed in frustration at a game once in a while. Now they're making the game respond when you do it.
Yeah, in frustration of losing, being killed or otherwise failing. I don't curse in frustration hoping that my game will suddenly respond and cause my character to kill the baddies or anything of that sort. This right here allows you to curse like a sailor in order to play your games. Drench yourself in filthy language to get enjoyment out of your game. You know as well as I do that children often get their hands on this type of game despite the rating. Then they'll listen to their kids cursing at the tv to play their game when they think the adults can't hear them.

This just isn't the kind of thing the gaming industry needs. Cursing in frustration at a game is primarily done in just that. Frustration. Mostly used when things aren't going your way or you've failed. It just gives the parents one more excuse to crack down on us even harder and give the media even more ammunition against the gaming industry.

Now, I don't personally care what the media says about us. I enjoy my games as much as any other person, but whether you agree or disagree, I don't believe that cursing should be a viable method of playing games. Call bullshit all you like, but I'm going to disagree with you.
