Trust Gamespot for shooters and horror games, trust IGN for strategy games and tactical shooters, and trust GameInformer for everything else. I usually just go with Gametrailers since they seem to have the best reviews (at least i think).

EDIT: Oh, AND NEVER TRUST YAHTZEE FOR ANYTHING!! Just watch Zero Punctuation for laughs.
yeah, there are way too many people devoting themselves to yahtzee for this. If you were selective and only listened to yahtzee, youd find yourself playing portal and psychonauts over and over. I can't laugh at my 360 fanboy friend and berate him cause yahtzee didn't like all his 360 exclusive games cause he can turn around and berate me cause yahtzee did the same with all my ps3 exclusives.

On the contrary when you have several websites, each with several reviewers, all reviewing hundreds of games a year, number scores tend to get this abstraction that I can't really trust, listened to what they liked or dont like, factor in how much you are affected by other people's/ your own opinion and make a decision from that.

I agree. I always read the reviews and I usually ignore the numbers. The numbers can sometimes confuse people, but I always know what the reviewers think of the game from their actual review. IGN's review was extremely positive and they only found a few minor drawbacks or problems, but those didn't really affect gameplay. Just get the game people, it's fantastic. Gamespot gave it a 9.0 and everyone else in existence that actually likes horror games loves Dead Space. Just pick it up and try it, then write your own unbiased review here on the escapist, would you kindly?

@ Decoy Doc:

I don't think something can ever be criticised for lacking lifespan (at least on a purely mathematical basis). As long as the length of the game feels suitable it can be half an hour or a hundred hours for all I care.
That's a very (forgive me I can't find a better word) 'reviewish' way of look at things. One of the problems I have with game reviews is that a profesional reviewer either doesn't pay for their games, or is paid to review them and thus the expense doesn't factor in. The average gamer, which again is whom IGN is aimed towards, has to take value for money into account because, for most people, games have an opportunity cost. By buying one game, you're stopping yourself from buying another, that means all games, regardless of genre can be compared to one another and length does become a deciding factor that can, in rare cases, make up for slightly inferior gameplay.

As such, I believe that claiming poor repeatability is an unfair criticism of a horror game. That's the only thing I'm saying.
Ah, looks like I misinterpreted your point. I thought you were critcizing the genre itself.

The reviewer does not apreciate the genre and therefore should not review the game (one of my favourites)
This is always true.
Bollocks is it. It's like saying only a mascochist should review a punch in the balls.

"It's a lot of fun you guys. You should try it"
I give Punch in the Balls a 4 out of 10. Sloppy controls, bad sound, and feotal vomiting ruin an otherwise interesting concept for an action experiance. The hit detection and realism are spot on though.

Just for shits and giggles how the hell do you decide a 8.7 or an 8.5 or say a 3 from a 2. Lets just say, yeah that was good or really good or just really bad. Done, now all you review sites and mags make checks payable to good old Mr. McShiznit for fixin your systems.

"You're just not a fan of being kicked in the balls!"

Also.

"I've seen your gamerscore! You haven't been kicked in the balls enough times! Or tried gettting your balls kicked online!"

I've played DOTA, so I beg to differ on the last part. XD

Great game. Controls well, good atmosphere. It's learned lessons from bioshock and system shock 2 and puts them to good use. The messages scrawled on the walls (which you can decipher if you learn the alien/mutant/thingie alphabet) are great. The environments are a little dingy though and if you don't like sci fi this game isn't going to change your mind. It makes a few obvious but at least interesting observations on religion. In particular it sends up a certain belief system starting with s and rhyming with 'ientology'

If you're one of those people who likes their survival horror with responsive controls and a useful camera it's a good choice but as good as the atmosphere is, the fact you can shred aliens left right and centre with mining equipment means the game isn't psychologically scary and quite often resorts to-BALARAGH!!!!!- shock tactics. Worth a 9 in my book. End of topic.

Edit: Comparisons with system shock 2 are very very fair. The game takes a lot from that particular masterpiece and certainly doesn't suffer for it. It doesn't however have a strong antagonist, or at least not so far.

SUPEREDIT: I give it two regular thumbs and one horrible mutant thumb up.

SUPEREDITMEGATURBOEDITION!: Stomping on shit is amazingly good fun. You'll find yourself stomping on everything. Aliens. Dead Aliens. Humans. Dead humans. Items. Doors. Planets etc

So would you say incredible wusses who are scared of strange noises in the dark could play this game comfortably (with the lights on)?

Depends. Are you a seasoned Survival Horror player? It uses a lot of the old SH tricks. It's also got a wondeful ambient track full of clanky and scuttling so on balance, probably not.
