Age confirmation is a necessary evil.

As others have stated, there are potentially better methods of checking this, but entering your birthdate isn't that much of an inconvenience.

Storing personal data like that is in violation of the law.
Sure, one could ask that they linked this with your personal account so that they always knew who you were and thus did not have to do it every time, but this means that everyone here under 18 (which is a lot of folks) that have registered would never get to watch anything.
And we all know that those "security-measures" are just for show, nothing prevents an eleven-year-old from watching the Duke Nukem trailer.

Maybe the world should stop pandaing (YEEEEP!) to children and simply let the video load, considering that any five year old can set their date to 1913.
Word is pandering, mate. Although Pandaing sounds far more hilarious.

OT: Not a big thing for me. Lets me know straight away what the content of the trailer is, and I can spare 5 seconds out of my day to put in my birthday.

anyway so i accidently clicked i was born 2004 and couldnt access a video obviously, but as it turns out NOW this awsome site DOES remember what i entered and doesnt let me watch any M rated videos anymore.

Are you fucking serious? Realy thats how you do it now? Youre not keeping children from watching ANYTHING youre just annoying anyone who is missclicking.

im well aware that there are a bunch of threads about this most likeley but i do not see the point in this.
why do you even put your actual birthday in anyway? Every site that has ever had one of those things on it knows me as someone born roughly around the early 1900's depending on how far back the years go.

As annoying as the Age gate might be, it's a legal obligation. The Escapist can NOT change the code behind the age gate, as it has to be implemented "as is".

If you accidentally locked yourself out of content you can clear your cache and try again.

I've been thinking about this also. Seems kinda stupid that I have to input a birth date every time. I'm allways logged into my profile and my birth date is in there... And that is my ACTUAL birth date. Normally when I want to watch a trailer or something and the site asks me how old I am. I just quickly enter something that makes me at least 18. Can't be bothered with it.

Why doesn't the site just quickly check my profile data...
Well that be super annoying to program and I am fairly sure the law requires you to actually manually input the birthday because people lie about there birthday in there profile (yes i see how its stupid becase they lie when putting in the date too) and to not link is sorta a way to confirm. I just know setting up the php for looking into your profile would be annoying.

Am I the only one who just smacks the mouse wheel down, or enters 11.11.1111, for laziness sake?

Well, there's an interesting glitch in that age thing.
If you leave the boxes as Day, Month and Year, and just hit the 'Go' button, you can watch the video straight away.
It's odd, but hey, I used it for trailers and Miracle of Sound's Duke Nukem music video.

So, it goes like this:

Over 18? --> Please proceed to watch the video, but we'll have to check later if you didn't actually get younger and below 18 since confirming that you're 18.
Under 18? --> OH MY GOD WHAT ARE YOU DOING BOY?! GET OUT OF HERE! YOU'RE NEVER GONNA BE ABLE TO WATCH ANY OF THESE VIDEOS EVER IN YOUR LIFE! AND DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT PASSING ANOTHER CHECK, BECAUSE WE'RE KEEPING THAT IN MIND BOY!

That's just pants-on-head retarded...

I usually enter 31st of February 1911. Works every time. Some laws are just stupid.

It's stupid but it's legal requirement, really it should be that it uses your age from your profile instead but that would be smart and the idiotic parent groups that most likely had this law put in place aren't.

I've put in my birthday before, why do I have to do it again?
The guidelines for handling age gates require that we save your information for your current session only. Unfortunately this means that you'll have to enter your birthday again to see this content after your close your web browser. Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience.
Straight from one of the videos that is rated M.

Really, It's there on the page and they understand that it is something that annoys us.

It is a legal obligation that they have to uphold.

Wow, are you people THAT lazy?
Also, you get a shitload of awesomeness from this website FREE OF CHARGE, the least you can do is enter your birthday once in a while and delete your cookies if you enter the wrong one ( you can't be in THAT much of a hurry to click the "submit" button unless it's some really good porn ).

If you really want to bash this law, then do that, The Escapist is not the only website that is forced to use this feature, not by a longshot.

Anyone could link me to one of these said trailers? Because I have never had to verify my age on here when I want to watch a video.

They have to do so for legal reasons. You'll notice that almost all mainstream video sites have similar setups (hell, you have to tell Steam your age every time even when you're watching a trailer from WITHIN Steam).

If I remember correctly, the problem is that they don't want to provide "inappropriate" videos to children, yet someone under 13 can't legally consent to have personal data stored. Likely also has to do with the possibility that a computer might be shared by a family of uneven ages.
