It's an inevitability, no use worrying yourself paralytic over something you can't control. We will all cease to be and there is no evidence whatsoever to suggest that anything comes after.

And now, a cup of tea.

Fear when preventable, accepted when inevitable sounds about right to me.

It's scary as hell and likely to be painful or uncomfortable leading up to it so an early death is not a good thing. While you're alive you should fight tooth and nail to stay alive like any sensible creature with a use would. When you're lying on your deathbed, however, you want to give up the ghost gracefully.

At least, that seems a good enough idea to me.

+1 and any sane person who doesn't have a belief system to give them hope of a cloudy afterlife with singing angels and stuff will quite likely fear it too.

The possibility that our entire consciousness is just sparks of electricity animating that slab of meat we call a brain, and once that spark is gone we disappear forever is just... Cmon how can one NOT find that terrifying?

I wouldn't fear death at all if I knew there was an existence after it, but as it stands, how can one not be terrified of death?

For an atheist, death shouldn't be something to be scared of, at all. Any atheist who is afraid of death doesn't understand what "ceasing to exist" really means.

So yeah, I'm not afraid of death at all. I'm afraid of dying painfully though. But it's not the death itself, its what comes before it. I imagine if I'm in agony I'll want death to hurry the fuck up.
Question: Have you ever almost died?

I mean, I'm pretty afraid of death and I'm as atheist as they come. Of course, I won't be conscious to perceive my death, but I'll have stopped existing. That's worse than almost anything else, surely? You can recover from almost anything but death, and you can continue to form happy memories and experience enjoyment most times while you're alive.

Perhaps you're one of those people who makes a distinction between "death" and "dying", but I don't know of many people who've reached "death" without first going through "dying".

EDIT -- Urgh! I was supposed to add this to the end of my last post, sorry about the double-post.

I think we should look at death as just another problem that needs to be solved. Preferably before it happens to me.

Why people think of death as inevitable is beyond me. What, because everything else has died before, that means that NOT dying is impossible? What do you people think technology is FOR?

I spent a fair moment where I knew I was gonna die, I was supposed to die but I survived, in that moment I found a faint acceptance of what was coming, and this is where I felt most people take it, and well that's it really.

i do not fear my own death as much as i fear the manner of my death. I have an even greater fear of my loved ones dying.

death in general is part of life, it is inevitably the very nectar that life thrives and suckles on and vice versa. from bacteria to plants to animals all will blossom from carcasses as the remains turns into soil.

Because everything that has a beginning has an end. Simple as that. Sure, technology might be able to keep you alive for millions of years or more. Would you really want to? Immortality might be more of a curse than a blessing.

it's very true, and I can explain it only like this :
Before this moment happened,I used to be damn scared of death, my body would literally jolt at the thought of there being no afterlife, after what happened back then that fear, that jolt that I used to get with the mere thought of death, it dissapeared and I've come to look at life a whole lot differently.

I believe it's something that should be accepted. Why would anyone worry about death in the first place?

it was -20 degrees celsius, I went out cold with such an extent of alcohol poisoning you could have knocked out 2 people with it (the big brunt was 2 bottles of whiskey swigged in 15 minutes on an empty stomach, no sleep and a stressed out body+brain)

I had about 2 flashes in which I realised what I'd done and what was happening and I slowly accepted it and on the last flash I didn't try to stay awake , people were hitting me in the face trying to wake me but I had accepted it and dropped.

I had been out cold 2 hours with only pants and a t-shirt in freezing weather so I had severe hypothermia, the only thing that my body could do was throw up cause someone had tried to make me eat before I passed out and that's what saved my life.

In the end I got into the hospital with very severe alcohol poisoning and hypothermia, apparently the one cancelled the other out because I suffered no lasting damages that I can really notice

This about sums up my attitude. It scares the hell out of me, nothingness.

Death leads into the unknown. The unknown should be hated and feared and loathed. Therefore, death should be hated and feared and loathed.

In all seriousness though, it is a scary concept, but one I'll have to face someday. With that in mind, I'm having my fill from this section of the buffet before I chance finding out if there's another course or not.

Edit:

Haha! The fear of there being nothing after death scares the hell out of you! Just found that to be somewhat funny. Maybe it's just me... ...Sorry, I'll go now.
