I haven't personally have an encounter with death. There has been death in the family, but I never saw a body or anything. My brother, though, on his 11th birthday went downstairs in the morning to find my aunty dead. We were living with her at the time. I kind of messed him up a bit but he likes to pretend it didn't affect him.

Been ninja'd mate, guy linked the video about page 1.

OT: I'm just glad people challenged Pirate Kitty, regardless of the awesome avatar she was trolling and if I had gotten here earlier I probably would have gotten mod wrath from flaming.

Anyway, I feel for you OP, we also put down our dog when he was diagnosed with cancer. Poor guy had a tumour the size of his bloody liver. We decided to wait a week for everybody to visit him before he died, but then we had a party on the weekend, and he was great, moving around, being more like his old self than before, since he had been worse for about a month before we found out. Next day he crashed and couldn't even move out of his bed. You could see in his eyes he was clearly in pain, so we took him to the emergency clinic and had him euthanized that night. So her statement about "giving up" on the animal just made me want to go into a rage. Thanks all.

Good luck with your mourning OP.

My Dad's Pit Bull killed my little dog once...I watched it happen...Although it didn't die right away...He bled a lot and there were large bite marks on him....I remember trying to comfort him that night, there wasn't a vet available at that hour so I got a box for him and put him in my room, while trying to help him the best a kid around/under ten could, then they took him to the vet the next day and he was barely hanging on...The Vet said he died....I don't know how the pain of cancer and a mortal wound compare, but I remember the sad whimpering noises he made as he struggled around those last few hours.

I feel your loss, a pet's pain and then death is a very sad thing. I'm sorry it had to happen.

My father died from cancer, year later, I had cancer. I'm not dead, though. My dog is also alive, even though he's a diabetic.

My condolences my friend, I had a friend that lost her kitty some time a go. But I never experienced death directly of a loved one yet.

Pirate Kitty, You're a troll and you know it. You're just playing dumb to rise even more attention to yourself and frankly, a good banning seemed to be the only way to shut you up. Getting the message across to you seems to be very doubtful.

If you are, but very unlikely, an inconsiderate and soulless sack of meat, blood and bones, I can imagine the pissed off look on your confused face.

Again, my condolences and I know how it is to have a big furry bundles of joy.

I <3 my Ebony big much!! :3

I'm sorry about your dog. I remember being at my cousin's house a few years ago when her dog died. She was pretty upset because the dog was around her whole life. I never had a pet around for a while, so I don't really know how it feels.

Personally, my grandfather and one of my uncles were dead before I was born and my other grandfather died last year. My grandmother died of cancer when I was 8 and my mom died of cancer when I was 10.

I know the feeling. My cat whom I had since I was 8 years old (Im 27 now) was put down about a month ago. Just heard about it through a nutcase ex which wasnt the most pleasing then verified it with my aunt. Not fun. She had kidney failure.

My mother killed herself April of 09 and then 6 months after my dad, who was like a best friend to me, ditched me, got remarried and moved across the united states. I feel you TC.

Things wont always be bad though. Brighter thing will shine and the memories of your pup will always be with you. :)

There was a spike of them a while back with my grandparents dying one after another.

None of it really phased me though. I was a little sad that I didn't get to know my grandfather better (he was a WWII veteran) but other than that, it wasn't too much of a concern.

After that, my uncle died; however, that was just a sad three weeks of crying for my mom.

Sorry if I'm getting you guys down. My question to you guys is: Have you ever had an encounter with death inside the family or pets?
To give you a bit of background, I never really grew up with a father figure in my household. My living conditions were never really all that stable and the only thing that I could really rely upon was myself for the longest time. When I was about 10, my mother met a guy that she had brought home. This guy was as close to an actual father figure as I've ever had, and I loved him with all my heart, so you can imagine what it was like to lose him at 12.

I'm nearly 25 and I managed to finally get past the mourning stage about three years ago, now.

Treatment would probably be a better solution, but whatever.
Are you made of money? Insurance doesn't cover your pets.

Also, folks, think it through. Animals are not people.

No no, don't get all hippie on me, think it through.

1) People can get health insurance. Animals? Not so much. So while it may be theoretically possible to save an animal that's been dismembered by a car or ravaged by cancer, a lot of folks simply can't afford the INSANE medical bills. And there's no one to help them.

2) People can receive counseling to deal with things like this. Animals? They're basically in it alone, thanks to the language barrier.
Yeah you can actually get pet insurance. Atleast in Australia that is.
Right, but not as readily. A lot of places don't have it at all, and those that do, it's often just to expensive... especially given that so many people can't even afford health insurance for themselves first of all. The "pet health insurance" industry is tiny, and it's not under the same scrutiny as the "people health insurance" industry... so they can charge what they want, cover what they want, yadda yadda.

So, by and large, people just can't get it. As you can tell, that post was cut short due to me having to step away from the computer rather urgently and just hitting "SEND." It's so far back in the discussion, I just didn't go back to complete it. Hopefully this clears things up a little.
Yeah I actually work in insurance and because the insurance industry as a whole is so heavily regulated over here the pet insurance companies can't just charge whatever they want. You can get pet insurance cover as a part of a business, farm or property policy and it's really not all that expensive either.
