I have got to stop reading stories like this, they always get me up set. Sorry about the dog by the way.

When I was a little kid I had a dachshund. I had him since I was a baby and he was a puppy. But one day when my mom was leaving the house he ran outside and into the street, he got ran over.

I had a newt for 8 years that died while I was on vacation. I made a frowny face, gave a long sigh, then had a humble funeral for him before he got flushed. I salute you Ribby, the fire bellied newt. Forever you shall be in my heart :)

*Hugs for every one on this thread*
My grandpa died when I was 6. He died of pancreatic cancer. I don't remember my other grandparents that well. (Afore mentioned grandpas wife is still alive). Man, I get down thinking about it. And my 5 year old brother's friend just died :( Fuck that was sad. Open casket wake too. The whole High School soccer team showed up at the wake for the kids cousin (who is on the team)

Hm, I can relate to the given situation considering that I really hope that my first dog that I've had since I was a little brat is now so old any human would be constantly followed by a nurse at the age. Now that I'm stuying out of the country my family belives it to have cancer and I find it a miracle that the dog's still alive considering it have been hit by a car, chased and beaten by dogs, cats and birds while we weren't looking. And all the crap she's been eating (some of it being actual crap).
I just hope that she's healthy enougth that it wouldn't be consider animalcruelety keeping her alive until I get jome this christmas.

Treatment for cancer is expensive shit.
Which would you prefer: Your mother suffers through multiple chemo sessions with little hope of improving, or gets put down quickly and painlessly.

This was the more humane choice.
Yup, not so humane now huh. And is cost still a factor if it comes to saving your loved one?
The OP's dog just died, and your intentionally making him feel even more horrible about it, why exactly? The cancer was inoperable, stop trying to paint him as a monster.

I mean, carry the argument on in PMs or something. He doesn't need to see this.

The corner of our backyard is the burial site of all our pets that have died, 5 fish, 1 rat, 1 cat, 2 hamsters... there pretty much the only deaths that have ever hit me. Ive had relatives die but for some reason i cant get sad about them...

I know exactly how you feel, man. I went through the same thing. My dog broke her leg, then, at the vet, was diagnosed with cancer. She was really old and my parents decided to have her put down. I was miserable for so long...

If you OD on heroin, and it's strong enough, and the ambulance arrives early enough to save your ass but a little bit too late to save your mind, you can wake up with permanent brain damage. I know a couple people like that who are basically just plugged into machines now. I also know a musician who had a stroke that was brought on by excessive substance use, which resulted in the complete loss of his memory, which included all of his musical ability. The guy could play just about every instrument in the orchestra beforehand, now he doesn't even remember the members of his own band. Or how to talk.

I use this picture not for humor but to convey my emotions.

As a musician I hate it when this happens. There have been so many amazing artists who have been taken off the stage before their time due to drugs. Shit, I just got really depressed.

Anyway, OT: I've lost a Grandfather, an Aunt and Uncle I was really close to, a cat and a dog throughout my life. I understand death is inevitable but cancer took the aunt and the uncle and human error took my Grandfather. My Grandfather had Parkinson's disease but somehow the experts messed up and gave him medication for the wrong type of Parkinson's disease. We learned after it was too late that the medication he was on was actually accelerating his variant of the disease and caused him to die before his time. These deaths hurt me at the time but I've moved forward. I know it sounds corny but they live on within me.

The most devastating of the deaths however was the dog. I was 6 when a freak prairie windstorm slammed a giant shed door into my puppy, killing her instantly. I still remember the horror and the despair of the days after that night. She is still buried under an apple tree in my backyard at home. She was my first encounter with death and I think now that it was a valuable lesson. I still dream about it though so it must have really etched itself into my psyche.

[sub][sub]I'm sorry BonsaiK, your story bothered me as soon as I read it. It reminded me of the day I found out Bob Moyer, a close friend (and musician) died. It is terrible when the musical community loses a pillar of strength to death or disease.[/sub][/sub]

No non-human animal has ever committed suicide. Ever. Never happened. Ever.
EEEHHH. Wrong. Dolphins in captivity have been known to simply hold their breath until they die.
One notable case, the dolphin who played the part of Flipper. Look it up.

Also, dogs who spend their time being treated as little more than dress-up dolls tend to live significantly shorter lives, just because they lack the will to keep living through that crap.
You know the kind. The ones with the owners that talk in baby-talk almost exclusively and fork out hundreds of dollars to buy little frilly dresses for their clearly unhappy pets.
They also sometimes just stop eating to get out of it. Can't think of any notable cases, but I'm sure you'd find something if you searched hard enough.

Continue as you are, though. Who am I to deprive a lady of her trolling.
OH WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE LEMMINGS!!

Yeah... both my cat and dog died within the same 2 month time span when I was 16 =/
I had grown up with both of them since before I could remember so it was hard... but they both lived full and happy lives. You get over it... not in the way that you forget and stop caring, but in the way where you accept it as part of life and realize that the fact they were even allowed such a good life was a blessing.

I have multiple dogs, I currently have 5 now, we've lost a fair few over the years and it's never an easy experience.

Though there was one fantastic experience involving one of my dogs being hit by a car on purpose by the workers across from where I live, somehow he managed to hit the dog, smash up all his front bumper and drive off before I ran outside, a few minutes later another car pulls up and starts telling us we have to pay for the damage to the car. I asked who hit the dog, he says "I can't tell you that." at this point I've told him to fuck off before I reach in there and give him 2 black eyes for being a smart ass about the whole thing, then he drives off.
The best part being my dog suffered zero damage from being hit, he was up and walking within 5 minutes and has never had any complications, this happened maybe half a year ago and I still have him.
I believe they did contact my parents wanting money afterwards, and threated to take us to court over the matter, and I believe the end of the conversation was "Do you know how much of a retard you'll look like trying to sue for car damages from a dog you purposely tried to kill and completely failed at?" and the whole thing just went away after a few weeks.

Also, folks, think it through. Animals are not people.

No no, don't get all hippie on me, think it through.

1) People can get health insurance. Animals? Not so much. So while it may be theoretically possible to save an animal that's been dismembered by a car or ravaged by cancer, a lot of folks simply can't afford the INSANE medical bills. And there's no one to help them.

2) People can receive counseling to deal with things like this. Animals? They're basically in it alone, thanks to the language barrier.
Yeah you can actually get pet insurance. Atleast in Australia that is.

What.

I hope to god that you're joking. Otherwise, I have an axe to grind. Through their skulls.
This has happened to me. Twice. Revenge was had though, sweet, sweet revenge.

I think one of stick insects got crushed by my little brother. I was so sad :(

Right, but not as readily. A lot of places don't have it at all, and those that do, it's often just to expensive... especially given that so many people can't even afford health insurance for themselves first of all. The "pet health insurance" industry is tiny, and it's not under the same scrutiny as the "people health insurance" industry... so they can charge what they want, cover what they want, yadda yadda.

So, by and large, people just can't get it. As you can tell, that post was cut short due to me having to step away from the computer rather urgently and just hitting "SEND." It's so far back in the discussion, I just didn't go back to complete it. Hopefully this clears things up a little.
