What do you think is the deepest turn based RPG? Can be Japanese or otherwise.

By deepest I mean best character scaling, most diverse combat. Lot's of abilities, character classes and well fleshed out leveling system. Hit me with some titles.

Pokemon. I shit you not.

EVs, IVs, Tier lists, Movesets, Type Matching, STAB, Hold Items, Base Stats.

Sub-genres of pokemon. Special Sweepers, Physical Sweepers, Physical Tanks, Special Tanks, Buffers, Debuffers, Hazers, Pseudo Hazers, Special Walls, Physical Walls.

All of these combine with the near 500 pokemon to make an insanely deep game.

And an INSANE competitive community.

Ninja'd. I came onto this thread specifically to call this.

Fallout 2.

I'm sorry, those games are perhaps the deepest, most interesting and best written RPG's of any sort that I've ever played.

If you haven't played them, do so immediately.

I'll wait.
Actually, I have played them, and the combat doesn't really vary from "shoot. Use stimpaks"... though maybe I played it wrong?

Wizardry 8.

Numerous races, classes, and abilities, fun character creation and leveling, and great voice acting. I think my only complaint might be that multiclassing is rarely a viable option, but so many of the classes fill hybrid roles that I found it not to matter that much.

Not to mention you can mix up the turn-based combat with either "phased" (combat broken up by rounds) or "continuous" (combat keeps going, allowing you to change actions on the fly).

Agreed. While pretty childish, I still buy the titles because of the incredibly awesome awesomeness it possesses.

Hahah. I just remembered picking up a Fallout collection in a 10 pound deal along with Civ 3 and Zeno Clash. Must be lying around here somewhere...

But to the point: Which is better?

Is the second more advanced or should I try the first before plunging into part 2? The game is on a timer right? I love no-end games but alas...

Edit: Oh yea and what is Fallout Tactics? On the box it says that one is included, is that one any good?

I love it. In Pokemon's case, simplicity is depth. Bulbasaur, derp!

I'm surprised that no one has said Disgaea yet, but then again, this thread is young.

Oh wait...

Yeah, I think Fallout 2 is probably the better game, because it fixes Fallout's problems, but they must be experienced chronologically for maximum enjoyment.
Damn...that puts me in an awkward decision. I know I want mazimum gameplay...but I hate skipping content and story. Ah fuck it, I think I'll install Nr.2.

I was going to say "Pokémon" as a joke...

Final Fantasy Tactics A2 has a LOT of different character classes, equipment, abilities, etc. I've spent maybe 140 hours or so on that game, beat it once (on Normal difficulty) and am doing so again on Hard. It's got something like 300 missions, many of which are repeatable, but only 20 of which are storyline missions.

The only problem is that if you actually do a lot of the side-missions, the rest of the game becomes extraordinarily easy.

I was thinking Temple of Elemental Evil since it is a fairly faithful translation of the 3.5 edition D&D system. But Wizardry 8 might just outdo it in terms of combat encounters and class variety.

ToEE was a fun play, but buggier than hell. Icewind Dale was pretty good, too. None of the compared to BG, though. The only game I think was in it's class was probably Planescape:Torment

Why can't they continue to make games like this? For Bioware, these days flash (aka cinematics) is more important than depth and replayability. THEN they say, "oh, wait, you can get our new DLC . . . ." . . if we pony up more $$$, of course.

I liked Grandia (could be Grandia 2, its been a while). Its combat is a lot like final fantasy's but the outcome of the battle can change depending on where your characters are standing.

EDIT: Also, kudos on the Aguirre avatar.

All hail Klaus Kinski!
How is it Turn Based? only thing remotely turn based is the optional V.A.T.S targeting system

Deepest (if not best) turn based rpg is K.O.T.O.R... duh
character scaling : no clue what this is but a gaurten KOTOR gots it
most diverse combat: Force powers, lightsabers, blasters, gerndaes, swords, dualwield, mines, stealth, droids gets coll stuff like flame throwers and stun guns
Lot's of abilities: ya gots all the force powers ie. pull,push,shock,stun,shield.... list goes on and on
character classes: well lets see there is about 14 diffrent charcters from difrent back grounds, droids, soldiers jedi, sith, mercearys, even a wokkie
well fleshed out leveling system. Very nice chosse skills, feats, force powers has an alignment factor too

Pokemon's awesome but not deep, awfully repitive

Discalaimer: Spelling mistakes abound
