I have only ever seen it for sale once, one copy (second hand I might add) which I managed to snag

Ragdoll Kung Fu and the 2008 Turok game are probably the closest I have from this gen, unless you want to get into some really obscure indie games. The first one is obscure because it sucks. Second one, I think that's the reason, but it's tough to tell because my laptop won't run it properly.

Well, I have some things like "Cross Edge", "Trinity Soul", and "Hyperdimension Neptunia" (the first one) which were under-the-radar JRPGs that you don't hear a lot about.

Folklore for the PS3. It's an alright JRPG game, though the monster collecting bits can get tedious. Also, Resonance of Fate by Tri-Ace, but I'm not sure if that counts as obscure.

I'm thinking of buying folklore, the demo seemed good but what did you think?

Oh and you just reminded me that I have faery legends of avalon which was a great game but sadly unfinished

I have both the One Piece Unlimited Cruise games on the Wii and those were a blast to play. Really went under the radar and was only released in Europe and Japan so I had to import mine and break the region lock on it.

Well, do you like Pokémon? Cause bits of it are Pokémon-style or Persona-style. It's a lot of collecting and swapping monsters to deal with the situation at hand. Also it's one of the few games to use the PS3 controller's sixaxis motion sensor. Overall I thought it was worth it. Very unique game, and I don't think I'll see anything like it again. Plus, you can get it fairly cheap.

Oh well, you don't have to level any creatures. But the basic idea is this, you defeat 'folks' or 'spirits' to collect different fighting styles and abilities that can be swapped out.

How about Sacrifice? That's a game that never really gets talked about, yet got a lot of critical buzz at the time...at least amongst those critics that actually played it.

Mind you I'm not sure it qualifies as "Modern".

Turning Point: Fall of Liberty.

Remember when that game was going to be the best WW2 game because it was going for a alternate history story, instead of taking the usual WW2 route and redoing the same battles? New battle settings, new weapons, new vehicles, new technology, all in some great original plot that still was grounded in WW2 limitations?

Well, it's okay. Actually, it's pretty below par. It's got some bugs that you run into, the combat is the typical two slots for weapons and X amount of grenades, the weapons are pretty stupid (except the three-shot Panzerschreck, I like that), the story only serves as an explanation for why you have to go to certain environments -- including a NY highrise, suburbs, and the freaking Whitehouse -- the new tech is still pretty stupid, and... just a lot of undecided things that probably needed more time. The game also isn't that good looking.

However, the game has given me still the best memory of this console generation. I was pissed off at some bridge level where you had to knock out about three Zeppelins while around fifteen guys were shooting at you. Around my fifth time retrying, I blew up a Zeppelin (using the bitching three-shot Panzerschreck, I like that thing), and an achievement popped up titled "Oh The Humanity!". Made the game worth it, strangely.

Oh I have that one too, played through it a dozen times when I first got it. Rather short though

There are a couple of reasons why I haven't played them. I find the whole concept silly and I'm not a huge fan of turn based combat or JRPGs generally, western RPGs on the other hand I love. Loved KOTOR, Baldurs gate, Icewind Dale, Mass Effect, Dragon age and others

Cross Edge is a hard game to simply say "good or bad" with. On one hand the idea is cool, the combat mechanics are decent if you like JRPGs, and it has an awesome cast of characters from a lot of diverse sources. On the other hand to succeed in the game involves searching all over a fairly empty map for the right events, you can progress without doing so for the most part, but if you don't see them all you wind up with a bad ending. This can be a pain without a Faq or one of the extremely rare (I have one) print strategy guides. What's more it's a game where to really succeed at it and "win" you need to actually beat the game twice consecutively doing pretty much everything to get the real ending. It makes a degree of thematic sense, but it can be a long, very involved project.

As far as the game itself goes, it also has a way of railroading you into using very specific teams of characters, especially later in the game. Basically the game becomes heavily dependent on getting characters who work together and combine their powers well to create more powerful effects. So building a party based on your favorite characters from the various sources becomes less viable in favor of choosing teams that are designed to play off each other well, in order to create the most disgustingly overpowered attacks... which become less disgustingly overpowered and more of a requirement as things progress.

It also winds features a mechanic similar to the FOEs from "Etrian Odyssey" for the DS whereby in doing random encounters you will occasionally get something stupidly overpowered for the area that is likely to totally WTFpwn you to begin with, which can make long-term exploring and generating random encounters kind of annoying. As the game goes on though getting these encounters and killing those monsters becomes necessary for crafting components and boosts.

It's one of those games that also uses the NIS Marketing strategy of selling tons of equipment packs, early character unlocks, packs of boosts, etc... which while strictly speaking unnecessary save you what could turn into hundreds of hours of grinding per playthrough depending on how much the RNG likes you. I've always wondered if NIS getting away with this is one of the reasons so many companies decided to embrace this kind of DLC for single player games, since they are probably the first company I saw do it.

In short it's a cool game, with a good premise, and some great moments especially if your a fan of the material, but it comes with some severe drawbacks.
