Yes, it looks good. Cant wait to try out the "streamlined job system". But, god is Vanilles' (however you spell it) voice terrible.

What did they say about it?
They gave it a 8.6. However, I'm kinda interested to get a PS3 or 360 for Final Fantasy now.

Only an 8.6?

Hmm... What did they say was bad about it?

And get a PS3. I'm not a fanboy (well, not really) but I love me some PS3 over anything else.

That's about the same as other review scores I've seen posted on finalfantasy-xiii.net.
All of them are around 8 or 9 with a single 7 in there. I haven't read the review(s) as I'm scared I'll get my most anticipated game ever ruined by spoilers.

Found the news release on finalfantasy-xiii.net.
There you go. [http://finalfantasy-xiii.net/2010/03/05/international-final-fantasy-xiii-review-embargo-lifted.html]

Cheesy, cutesy dialogue. The fact that it's linear and streamlined is somewhat of a double edged sword.
But...almost all FFs are linear.

Why won't people acknowledge this?

honestly, it looks like they cut all of the parts out of JRPGs that Yahtzee doesn't like.

He still would never give it a positive review, but it might like it more then others..

*shrug* I don't care if he reviews it or not.

Okay, let's watch it. Might as well kill the little hype I have for this game...

Oh goddammit, another Rikku expy indeed. Let's just hope most of the cheesiness is concentrated on her so we have to mentally shut up just one character. At least the voice acting seems good for the rest of the cast.
Then again, I haven't really watched any trailers after the first one or two.

I'd recommend the PS3 version since the 360 plays at a lower resolution.

Their main storylines are. But so is every game's, more or less anyway. By comparison FFs were much less linear than most games.

No, not as open as games like Fallout, but they still had noticeably more freedom than your average game.

True, but you want to progress the storyline first, then you get the freedom to do whatever.

I suppose the free exploration is usually mostly closer to the end of the game after you obtain the airship, but I there used to be a bunch of optional sidetracking along the way too in many FFs.

And the end game is usually when you want to do most of the side-questing, so it always worked well for me.

Actually, I hope he doesn't. Each time he reviews a JRPG, we have a swarm of anti-JRPG threads.

If I wanted the freedom to do whatever I wanted, develop my characters precisely as I wanted, and *gasp* actually role play, I'd play a western RPG.

I love JRPGs, but think of them more as interactive movies as opposed to being actual RPGs.
Bear in mind that I haven't played it, but the way the linearity was shown in the review was basically that any area you were in, you would essentially walk down a straight corrider to the end and then onto the next area. No towns, no open areas to explore (for the most part, they said there was a bit about 12 hours in where you hit open plains), no real merchants (just a "shop" option at save points). The whole idea seemed to be that you follow the thread from beginning to end to see the story, and while past games had more open space to run around in, find secret weapons of the uber, and do sidequests, this is far more of an amusement park "on rails" style ride.

Of course, that's just how the review made it look. I'm not entirely convinced that this is a bad thing, since I tended to get bored with the grinding bits in the old FF's. Sadly, however, certain PS3 activists are already blaming this on the 360 release, saying that the 360 is simply not awesome enough to handle how good FF13 would've been, so they had to chip it down to this to pull off a multiplatform release.

Indeed. Its a shame that so many people vicously tear up a genre just because Yahtzee doesn't like it.

I'm still torn on getting it. Because as much as I like Final Fantasy, heck, all RPGs, I never finish them. With mixed reviews from both critics, websites and even a friend at uni who imported it, I just can't decide wether my £40 credit should go on it or wait till Alan Wake.
