Ha, I can relate to that. I bought a bunch of stuff in the steam holiday sale but... well, I just don't feel like playing them anymore.

This was a good review for a great game. I agree that the world would be a better place if there were more things like this game in it, things that really made you feel, and think about things. but sadly I don't think t a large majority of people agree. Oh, that reminds me, I made a review back when the demo first came out, and I was wondering if you wouldn't mind me reviewing the full game.

I really do love the KS fanbase, the Shimmie's a great place.

Not in the slightest my good man, more opinions are always welcome. Just gives us that many more chances to convert the doubting masses. Thanks for the comments, too!

Oh man, is it ever. I'm looking forward to huge amounts of new content now that the game's out in full; I think my favourite has to be Rin photoshopped onto the cover of Douglas Adams' 5th book in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: "Mostly 'Armless."

I'll be honest, I'd never even considered trying this genre before, having always thought of it as something 'weird' that I'd never be interested in. After reading the news article here on The Escapist, however, I took a chance on it, and it has been one of the most enjoyable experiences I've had for a long time.

Maybe it's because I stumbled into her route first, but I found Emi's story to be the one I felt the most emotionally involved with. However, I think Lilly's was my favorite (although I haven't done Rin's route yet), because
I loved seeing Hanako grow as a person and become more confident, without having to go through my least favorite section, where her and Hisao have sex in her route, which I hated Hisao for as it seemed to me as completely the wrong thing to do it that situation.

All in all, this VN has inspired me to give others a go, and any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Well, having not played Katawa Shoujo I'm hardly one to be able to accurately be able to gauge what you're after too precisely.

Still, quality Visual Novels I've played which I'd imagine could be somewhat similar (for their emotional impact) would be Planetarian: The Reverie of a Little Planet [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.274139-Deskimus-Prime-Reaches-For-The-Stars-and-the-tissues-In-Planetarian] and A Drug that Makes You Dream [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.135672-Neutral-Drow-reviews-A-Drug-That-Makes-You-Dream] (which has the advantage of having an official English release). And I've heard good things about Symphonic Rain [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.308335-Neutral-Drow-reviews-Symphonic-Rain] and Kana: Little Sister [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.206764-Neutral-Drow-reviews-Kana-Little-Sister] - rather controversial as its main theme might be - in that department too.

Then of course there's fantasy themed ones like Fate/Stay Night [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.223721-TYPE-MOON-Review-anniversary-Fate-Stay-Night], or Sci-fi themed ones like Steins;Gate [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.315473-Steins-Gate-PC-Game-Review]. Both are popular for a reason. Fate/Stay Night's status as a genre classic is probably contested only by Ever17: The Out of Infinity [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.263601-Deskimus-Prime-Presents-Ever-17-ything-You-Ever-17-Wanted-To-Know-About-Ever17] (which I've yet to play), whereas Steins;Gate is the most modern example of a good VN to see an English translation I can think of.

I agree that it was a bit short. I enjoyed what i played of it so far though.

For a free Indie game like this it's great.

Fantastic review, I couldn't agree it more...95% done and I still wanna play through character's stories again. My favorite? Like a few others, it's Rin, or Emi, Shizune is a very close second. Rin is probably my favoritist favorite, it's so complex yet simple, and so...heartwrenching at points, especially the bad ending:

"I've got no arms to hug with, that makes me bad....I'll find a way to be able to hug people, will you forget about me? I'm good at forgetting *disappears*"

(Doesn't hold the emotional weight of the scene but T_T)

Well, your review convinced me. Giving it a download and we'll see how it goes. Make note that this is my first game of its type, and I'll be dropping back in to update how I feel about it once I've started playing. Hopefully it's similar to how your review described it.

Oh god, I got one of the many Rin bad ends the first time through. That one fucking line, man.

"I'm good at forgetting."

All balanced out by that good ending, though. I can't say enough times how refreshing it is to have well-written drama that's due to the characters themselves, not blind speeding car drivers or incurable chick disease.

Success! I await your thoughts, it's always great to hear from a first-timer.

"Emi's route requires you to force Hisao to be a bit of a dumbass,"

ah so that explains how I ended up going that route. in my defense, i felt like i encountered about five choices and none of them seemed to be dragging me in one direction or the other. i guess mass effect and fallout 3 are to blame?

great review. you totally hit it on the head. i'm fresh off my first run and you pretty much covered the entire (amazing) experience. Now I only hunger for more!

Just finished Emi's route. Ended up following it quite on accident - I was shooting for Hanako, but being a newbie I must've missed something. However, I'm going to go for it again, since I think I know what I missed. That might be about as telling as anything else I can say. I don't know that I've played enough to give an accurate assessment of the genre, but the game itself is fuzzy and quite heartwarming, like petting a kitten if you don't mind me stealing your description. About as close to reading a good romance novel as I'll probably ever come, and I'm happy with that. I noticed by the end that, except for when they were directly mentioned, I had completely stopped noticing Emi's specific disability. It helps that they usually only show the top half of her body, but I was getting to the same level with the others as well.

Overall, I think they did a brilliant job on it, and your review was spot on. A couple parts I thought could have been written a bit better, and a few times I wish they would've expanded, but that never actually detracted from the experience. Made me look at the whole thing differently than usual, although I might have a bit of experience with the situation (my girlfriend's dad had his leg amputated a while back, and I don't even notice it except when we joke around with him). Still, I think I learned something from it, and I have at least two more stories I'd like to do to solidify that.

Thanks for writing this up and getting me to download it. Definitely worth it.

That's what I found so great about it; really hits home that the people are much more than any physical or mental traits they might have. "Having no legs" is nowhere near as interesting as Emi herself. Though to be honest, her disability is fairly easy to work around - compared to say, Rin who can't even put a shirt on unassisted, so her route focuses a little less than, say, Hanako or Rin whose disabilities are very difficult to sweep under the rug.

Expect the other routes to be very different beasts, due to dealing with very different girls. Hanako's is also wonderful.

I'm not gonna lie, it did make me a little warm and fuzzy that you liked it.

I was going to review this...until I realized I didn't want to rush through each and every single story. In fact, I don't know if I wanna play it again; I've just finished Emi's story and it...kinda feels like I'd be cheating on her if I try someone else's path. Is that wrong?! D:

Anyway, great review and spot-on. I'm glad you're one of those who's able to review the game properly as compared to all those guys going "WAAH! H-scenes 4 horny nerdz!!11!1!".

Also, great screencaps.

It's an awesome review, and I really was skeptical at first when I heard about this game. But I didn't want to be those couch potato reviewers and judge a book by its cover.

So I downloaded the game.

By the end of Hanako's route, there was dust in my left eye.

And my right one.

I'm man enough to admit it.

This game is one of the most emotional games I ever played.

Gone through the first act and the chapters for Hanako and Lilly, gotta say i knew the Escapist controversy was off by simply checking the plot snippets on the main site, but i wasn't expecting myself to really start to like it. I'm working on my own review, hopefully you and i can get some more support for that studio. Going to have to bust my ass to get to the bar you set though. I've still been lazy in installing pictures into my reviews.
