The people who make this newpaper and the people who take it seriously need to be stoned to death. With old CRT monitors.

The story is actually true
that explains some things like how they got it mixed up with a board game of similar game but how could they get it get confused with warhammer and how come the kids didn't mention the rotting dog to any one also if they don't know how to stick something in the oven or micro wave by the game of 13 the mother already has done a bad job also the daily mail only mentioned small world and talked about it being a fantasies world of trolls and orgs and then include a picture of warhammer so I think they made the mix up intentionally and added stuff to make video games look bad or they completely mate up the story to make games look bad because they haven't done that for a month. this is what I think has happened a mother got addicted to small worlds she neglected her kids and dog the dog died and the kids where sick a neighbour or teacher checked out what has happened they found the dog but to late the mother went to court and you can guess the rest some one at the daily mail heard this and then decided to blow it out of proportion and replace social networking side with video games that have trolls and orgs.
Incidentally typing ?Small World Online Orc? into GIS yields the World of Warhammer image used as the 4th image, so i?m guessing that?s where that came from

what i meant was the story of the dead dogs and such were true, the story got picked up earlier by uk blogging news because they implicated the wrong game "Warhammer online"

(the original story was written by an agency and farmed out to the Mail rather than written by a Mail writer or contractor)

Daily mail
fox network
the sunday times
etc.

what do all these things have in common??
they all love to print stories that make people they barely know look bad, or they try to hype up the truth of mundane stories.
but mostly they take a subject that most people have strong feelings about, make it look awful and when people start to ask where it all started (after the person, group, company etc is ruined) they waltz forward head held high singing "It was us we spread the truth first,LOVE US, LOOOOOOVE UUUUSSSS"!!!!
sunday times?
thats not something i'd put in the same list as the daily mail and fox news.

Wow. Just... gah.

I came on this website today hoping to have a little chuckle. Now, with this, and discovering that 72 cocking percent of the baby boomers support the video game bill, I don't think I'll be on again until Wednesday.

I mean, COME ON. A women neglects her children over an online board game? Is the Daily Mail working with Jack Thompson or Micheal Atkinson or Beelzebub to produce a story like this?

I don't know because I don't read the newspapers. But I'm lead to believe that 99% of people who DON'T read the Daily Mail, think people who DO read the Daily Mail are complete arseholes.

I would advise that any information you get in fututre from the Daily Mail be taken with a rather large pinch of salt.

I barely read those things anymore so i was scraping the bottom of the barrel for names of papers....if they are not as bad as the others I'll be happy to remove them from that list.

Yeah someone just made it up. I hear these news many times a month. In fact I have probably heard 10 times a couple being busy growing their virtual baby in an online game that they left their real one to starve.

OT: There is most definitely a grain of truth in there, I just don't know where.
"Grain" is putting it a bit strongly with the Mail

Good god, what is this newspaper's damage towards video games? Oh sure its a red letter topic that is certain to garner attention, but even Fox News takes breaks from calling Obama a terrorist.
I take it you don't watch Fox.

Daily Mail
Please Escapist, please, please, please stop bringing anything spotted in this hate-filled BS-spouting not-fit-to-be-used-as-toilet-paper rag. It makes us UK-based Escapists headdesk so hard it hurts. Lots.

Take it from us. Anything found in that poor excuse for a paper is either an outright lie, or so grossly exaggerated so as to 'shock' it's readers (if indeed there are any - I wouldn't be surprised!) that it's not worth reading!!

Every time you cite the Daily Mail as a source, we rage about it; this time you've already done it for us. Good on ya!

Problem is, it wasn't just the Mail this time. The Sun had it, I posted the Metro's front page; and it's found all across the web. Much as I loathe the Mail, it wasn't even a Mail journo. This piece was written by an AP reporter AFAICT.

I can only reiterate what's been said before

The Daily Mail makes its money off people who like to be shocked and outraged and angry without actually having any excuse to be so. The Mail happily supplies them with over-exaggerated and/or falsified information so that they'll keep coming back for more.

Daily Mail's the supplier, the readers are the real problem. It's just supply and demand, sadly

Everyone seems to hate video games for some odd reason. They're all trying to make it look like the cause of violence etc.

As it has been noted, the Daily Mail is not the only news outlet spreading this. It was also in London's Telegraph, a very reputable newspaper.

Also, it should be reminded to everyone here that typos do happen. Unfortunately, this one went sprawling out of control and will do serious harm to Days of Wonder.

The typo I'm talking about is that there is a Facebook game called SmallWorlds. Notice the "s" at the end there, and the lack of a space between Small and Worlds?

Granted, this doesn't mean there aren't problems with the story still (like a 13-year-old not being able to use a microwave to have hot food instead of beans straight from the can without a fork or spoon).
