So, I've never played Deus Ex before. Of course I've heard "good things" about it, but the same can of course be said of several games I don't like, so I don't really think popular opinion matters much lol. Anyway, all I've ever really seen on Deus Ex is actually from the newest iteration, and while it looks good I'm not really convinced. But back to the subject at hand, is Deus Ex a good game, and more importantly, why?

At $2.50 you should get it.

If you hate it, you can at least laugh at the voice acting!

I've heard good things too, that's why I bought it. And if it's bad.... I loose £3 (for both, £1.50 for the GOTY). No biggie!

READ ME!!! Very detailed.

Lets make one thing clear, the shooting SUCKS in deus ex. You start with extremely innacurate weapons and every time you take a step forward you raddically lose accuracy, if you stand still you get more accurate but it takes about 5 seconds :( The time gets less and less as you increase your skills and ducking or moving slowly does not benefit you, you will still lose accuracy very fast if moving despite what you do. On top of that the weapons in the game kinda suck, a pistol with 6 bullets in the future that does not kill with headshots half of he time and a tranquilizer crossbow that takes time to kill someone.

As you see, as an fps, it sucks badly and that REALLY brings down the game since in comparison with new fps, it really feels like a huge problem with the game.

Now what is good with the game: when you start you gotta pick skills, healing faster with items, using less lockpicks to open stuff, being better with certan weapon types. As you play the game you get more skill points from primary, secondary objectives and exploration. So thats one thing, its rpg system. Another is the augmentations which give you various abilities, auto heal, armor, camera radar, move faster, silently, be stronger. Those elements are however used diffirently from games nowdays and consume bio energy so you will need cells to recharge, on top of that each slot has 2 possible augmentations, eg either move faster or run silently, or do more damage with meele weapons or pick up heavier objects. On top of that you can upgrade them. So "Choices" are appearing in the game that change your character and what you can and cant do. Either cloak or be invisible from robots and camereas.

The game has a form of open world at certain city levels in which you can interact with npcs buy stuff, exlpore and do sidemissions.

By doing missions you get credits that you use to get all these and weamon mods or grenade/mines, which could be explosive, gas, emp and more. Even from the begining the game asks you if you want a rocketlauncher a sniper rifle or a tranquilizer to start with.

The REAL gameplay of deus ex is in the enemy bases you explore and the multipe ways to do it.

Eg: Guard, shoot him, sneak past him, stun him and knock him unconcious, plant a mine in his path.

Or going into a room, you can:

Find the key and open the door, lockpick it, blow up the door, hack the keypad, find the password, go to a computer with finding the login or hacking it, find the password there or unlock the door from there.

OR pick up a box, place it under an airduct climb in and get in the roo from there.

There are turrets and lasers in your way, throw an emp bomb, blow them up, hack them with a multitool.

Choices, choices, choices, so many ways to do something so you can replay those sections with difirent ways, hell you can even hack ATMs or use accounts you found to steal money. Enemies with turrets inside a room? either throw an emp and a gas grenade or find a computer to hack the turrets and use them on to kill the guards.

Also depending what you do in the game, certain people will die and your character will change sides, let alone diffirent endings.

Deus Ex is the game every gamer needs in their collection, you need to experience it, I wont spoil it for you but what you do has an actual direct outcome in cut scenes but you actually feel attached to it because it was your choice.

Deus Ex is the gamers version of a ravers Human Traffic, its our Quadrophenia moment as it were.

Deus Ex is Keith Moon drumming for 20 minutes straight, its Concorde taking flight for the first time, its when your in college and you suddenly realise that women are beautiful, its seeing your first sunset...

Buy it.

Its well worth it, but it does take patience especially if you've been bought up on modern, fast paced shooters. As Macjack said, at the beginning of the game you're crap, but as you increase your skills and augments, things get easier and a lot more fun. Also it's worth spending time seaching each level as there's a lot of cool information and secrets. Its also a game that embraces freeform as much as a game of its time could and its worth playing repeatedly just to see what happens if you do something different as the developers almost always thought of it bfore you did.

Any game is worth paying $2.50 for even if you only have a mild interest in it.

I say get it since it is probably one of the best games ever made. Also the third one is coming out soon so may as well play it and see what the fuss is about before the new one comes out.

Not sure how the actual shooting mechanics compare to recent games because I'm really not into guns and shooting but the RPG elements and the nice huge levels that give you more choice than most games of how to go about dealing with them makes it great.

If you haven't bought it yet after seeing the responses, you're doing something wrong. Go. Right now. Stop reading after this sentence and go buy it. NOW.

$2.50 is nothing. I'd buy used roadkill if it was that cheap. A game that's actually good at that price? Why are you even asking? Buy it now!!!!

That might be because it is an RPG and not an FPS, skills are character based not user based.

OT: If you want to see what quality games were back in the day this is a must play.
