On one hand, the fact that they lock you into a room with the boss and force you to fight it out is a bit jarring.

On the other hand, even with all the points spent in Hacking and Stealth, Jensen is still a highly trained former SWAT with robot arms and probably lugging around several firearms. He should be able to shoot a ************ when the situation calls for it. And there isn't much you can do to improve your dude-shooting abilities. Aside from the Damage Reduction augs, there isn't much in the way of combat oriented choices available to you. Recoil reduction is nice, but not mandatory with most weapons.

Also, Typhoon. Level 2 Typhoon might as well say in its description text "Do you hate bossfights? GET THIS AUG!"

The bosses are easy. All of them. And I did play the game as a stealth focused, Pacifist achievement-earning Jensen (though by the third boss, I had accumulated tons of Praxis points and invested in the Typhoon. But so should you, by then).

You're given tons of options on beating the first boss (there was a rocket launcher lying around not long before you get to him, there are hazardous barrels in the room you can throw at him, EMP grenades stun him).

The second boss is rendered completely helpless by the stun gun. She literally run a couple steps at me to start the fight, at which point I stunned her. She didn't move from that spot until she died (I alternated re-stunning her and hitting her with grenades).

The third one is the only one that might give you difficulty, and that's only if you did something that I won't spoil. But I stunned him with a gas grenade, used Typhoon, stunned again, Typhooned again, and he died.

And the final boss is the easiest of them all. Just stay in cover and shoot when you have the chance (or you can try hacking). While the other bosses did all kill me once or twice (as I was trying different things to see what stuns them), the final boss barely did any damage to me at all.

For every single boss, there are containers in the room with guns and grenades. I never even needed to go to these during a fight, but they are there. If anything, I think non-lethal players should have an easier time because we're more likely to have the stun gun on us.

I played the game with total stealth in mind. My motto was "If i'm shooting, I've failed somewhere."

Then a forced boss battle happened. I had to defeat him with a empty tranquiliser gun and a crossbow.
I'm confused. If you believe you "failed" by resorting to shooting AND you have an empty tranq gun, then you must have been failing a lot along the way. I've seen youtube videos of people beating Berrett with only a stun gun and/or barrel throwing. Or just a few well-placed frag grenades. There are tons of options that don't require you to even have a real gun. So in that sense, the game still encourages you to play your own way.

My first play through I poured a hundred rounds of assault rifle ammo into him before he went down. My second playthrough I'm doing the no-kill and no-alarm run, so I only had a stun gun and a few proxy mines I had picked up. So I stealthily circle-strafed him while dropping the mines behind me. He kept walking into them until he was dead, without me firing a shot.

I really don't see the problem with the boss fights. If you only see one way to beat them, then you aren't thinking hard enough.

yeah, the forced boss battle was something straight out of Yahtzee's "don't do this in a game" list, though it didn't annoy me that much because let's face it, you can't always be the one who gets the drop on the enemy. Still, I don't think the Jenson I was playing would have just walked nonchalantly into a room filled with what he thought were two elite mercs...

But, to say it almost ruined the game for you...someone's a bit touchy.
Yeah, I confess, that was probably too much. Still I died more times in that battle than I have in the entire game. I'm up to the third boss by the way. It happens two more times.
I bet it happens a 4th time as well...

Most of these bosses have a trick to them which (if you figure them out / google them (the... easy way out way.. yuck) they are less of a brick to break with your head. More like a piece of paper. )

I was stealth, but i also had an amazing pistol (i upgraded that bad boy so much) so i would cloak, run behind him, stun, pump him full of lead, then cloak and hide.

I can see the issue if you have no weapons though...

Bear in mind its the first boss, and if you're going for the pacifist run, guns will never be your priority.

Nope. They have said for months now that this was how it would be, so I wasn't annoyed at all.

They also leave enough things around to kill the bosses regardless of what you have on you at the time.
yeah basically this.

if you were really good at stealth as you say you are OP, then the boss battle wouldnt be much of a problem at all considering all the shit in that room. plus if you are doing everything stealthy as you say you are, you should have plenty of ammo and shit you should have been picking up along the way

This is how it went for me:
1. Battle starts: "Me gonna smash youuu!"
2. Press F1: "Huh, where did he go?"
3. Plant 4 explosives charges.
4. Watch cutscene.

I think I read it on some forum you can knock him out with a few dozen tranq/stun shots but seeing how you kill him in the cutscene anyway, I though it wasn't worth the trouble.

In that fight i just ran around and hit him with the cans of gas lying around. The green gas cans stun him while the red ones do great damage. Hit him 3 times with explosive barrels and then finished him off with 1 shot from my tranquilizing sniper rifle.

So I'm expected to drop my tranquilisers and pick up a heavy machine gun of which I have never used before?
He means explosive barrels etc. as well.

They should have had kill switches that would've been really hard to find, I would've thought that would be a lot cooler. Even though that might've messed up the plot a bit.

Meanwhile, I was a bit more disappointed that the "kill everyone" style of gameplay wasn't more fleshed out. Even fully upgraded, I can't take many hits, and that's kind of annoying.

Still a good game.
I've been thinking the same lately. There was no where nearly enough augmentations or ammo drops to effectively go through each scenario on a shooting spree. I'm not a fan of stealth and I ended up "stealthing" through a large part of the game just because run and gun wasn't viable.

Folks, the OP _did_ beat Barrett. And, having done so, did indeed feel satisfaction. The question is why he had to in the first place.

Personally, I wish there was at least one other option for getting past the boss fights besides "shoot them in the head / or with explosives, for massive damage." In the original Deus Ex, I took out Anna Navarre with a kill-phrase, then snuck away from Gunther in Paris, leaving him to shout to the empty room that he would avenge his partner's death. Poor Gunther. ;_;

I was a bit miffed by that too, but there is a whole load of stuff in that room that can be used against that particular boss. If you happen to have a concussion grenade handy then just chuck that at the beginning and go hide behind him somewhere. I found that he tends to just stand around if he doesnt know where you are, so just chuck an exploding barrel at him then duck behind cover and go look for another barrel.

I had the great great great idea of starting my first gameplay in Deus Ex Difficulty; so that boss was full of restarts and blind-auto-aim-grenades-tossing... The achivements doesn't counts bosses for stealth bonuses but still, it caught me really off-guard, I mean, I avoided most soldiers and used most of my tranquillizer rifle to get there; thank god I got this game by pre-ordering it, so I got a silenced sniper rifle and a dual barrel shotgun that I didn't want to drop, but with little to no ammo, in the end I finished him off with the tranquillizer rifle... sigh

By the way, is possible to get tranquillizers in China? I'0m over there now, and I've been doing lots of missions with hand-to-hand takeouts, it's getting more difficult to get closer to them even with invisibility and all the awareness I could put...

Yep, and there are another three of them, none of which are as hard as that first one, thankfully. The last even has some (VERY) minor hacking elements in it. Worst design choice in the game, but the game was doable with them.

If you have to lethal weaponry, stun gun him. It takes about 15 ammo to do it, but it works perfectly. You hit him once, he spazzes out, and doesn't hit you. You have enough time to reload, and shoot him again before he stops. It's not ideal, but I had to resort to it after running out of 10mm ammo. Easiest boss fight I ever did.

Or you could use a concussive grenade (which stuns him for greater 'damage' you need to use much less stun gun shots if you also use concussive grenades) or a stun gun shot to stop him, then pick up one of the red explosive barrels and throw them at him or fire a few headshots.

The second I bet with a pistol, the third with a revolver (with explosive ammo, BE SURE TO BRING THIS. Life saver) The third requires at least a few shots with a lethal weapon.

Run around the area, only stop if he is no where near you. He jumps over the walls, and you can hit him a few times with the revolver, each shot seems to do some knockback on him. When he recovers, run around again, repeat. I wasn't shot once doing this.
