Square-Enix has just restored a sliver of my faith in humanity by removing the Region Locking on the upcoming PC title, Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

After their forums basically imploded when the information was released, with the thread discussing it reaching nearly 28 pages of pure hatred in less than a day, they announced that the Region Locking will be removed.

The original thread is here:

The announcement is here:

There should now be nothing left to stand between Square-Enix, and oodles of my money.
I must say, although the original move was made of pure dick, this move is surprising, as usually publishers don't back down amidst complaints. See Ubisoft and 'From Dust', and their persistence with the Always On DRM Scheme and utter confusion created by their constantly changing opinion.

Does Deus Ex: Human Revolution have multiplayer or something? I don't see the point in Region Locking if the game is all single player.

and epic looking single player at that.

No multiplayer; the Region Locking was used to prevent people from importing the game for cheaper.

Region locking means that you can't import a copy (say if you find it cheaper in another country, or if the game isn't released in your country).

I'm proud of you Square. I never import, but region locking is incredibly annoying, especially when a game is already translated(Xenoblade).

I'm just wondering, what's the problem with Ubisoft's PC DRM? Everyone I know that plays PC games usually plays it while being connected to the internet anyways. I guess it's the principle of the matter, but still.

I'm happy they changed it, but they'd already done damage to plenty of customers and stores that had to cancel preorders. At least it should stop them from trying it again.

I guess this is good news. It didn't particularly effect me, nor am I the person who feels the compulsive need to white knight the "every gamer," but I suppose this will make people happy...

The devs made the permanent highlighting an option after massive complaints too.

pretty cool, I must say.
Oooh, good to know. I'll be turning that off, then.

It is still Region locked withing Asia, Russia etc. and they haven't said anything about Australia.
The main thing affecting Australia has been resolved. It's been confirmed that the UK version will work in Australia. That's the version most Australians would have imported.

Hmmm... Probably has something to do with region locking being listed as a restrictive trade practice in Oz.

Also, why would the UK version be the one most australians imported? Most people I know who import get their stuff from Asia or the US. The region locking is only for PC versions so the whole old tv standards thing wouldn't matter.

Maybe their legal department agreed... anyway it's certainly better than before... it's still the first Publisher to introduce "Region Locking" to Steam though setting a precedent so the thread title is a little off.
Actually I don't know if I would count this as the first region locked publisher on steam. Valve region locks almost all their games. I purchased a copy of Portal 2 when I was in Europe, I came back to the states and it was region locked for me. Sad part is that I actually paid more than the US cost. And when I contacted Valve about it they told me that I had to use my 1 time removal of a title from my account and I had to purchase another copy of the game to use in the states.

OK I might be wrong about "most Australians" who import doing so from the UK. I assumed as such based on the fact that it's been cheaper than the Asian and US stores I've looked at. I used to import from an Asian place that used USD, but lately I've found the UK option better.
