Deus Ex is an FPS-RPG made by Ion Storm. It was released in the year 2000 and is one of the best games of all time. It is deeper than any other game of this generation and can be played over and over and over and you will still discover things you didn't know about before.

Q: Hey slow down, what is it all about?
A: The game takes place in the 2050s, when a plague known as the Grey Death has spread throughout the world. There is an extremely limited supply of the cure and it is being rationed out by UNATCO (United Nations Anti-Terrorist COalition). Predictably, the world is falling into chaos. Terrorist groups and resistance organizations are popping up all over the globe. You play the role of newbie UNATCO agent JC Denton, and you will be sent on missions to stop the threat of these groups.

Q: What's so special about JC?
A: JC is special among UNATCO agents because he is one of the first to have experimental nanotechnology installed in him. These augmentations allow him to preform superhuman feats such as running and jumping incredible speeds and distances, healing wounds over time, becoming highly resistant to gunfire, and becoming completely invisible, among other things.

Q: Okay. How do I play the game?
A: However you want. You can upgrade your super-strength and bulletproofing augmentations and become a walking tank, spewing fire and rockets in every direction. You can sneak in like a ninja and use your stealth powers to take everyone out silently. You can pick locks and hack machines, avoid enemy contact, and complete the game without killing a single person. Let me repeat that: you can complete the game without killing a single person. From the very first level you are presented with tons of different methods to complete your objective, and your options only increase in number as you progress through the game. You are never forced into a particular play style. It's completely up to you.

Q: Any videos of the game in action?
A: I could show you videos with really cool action and dialogues between characters, but that would spoil the game for you. I could show you videos of the first few levels, but you don't have the coolest powers and weapons in the first few levels. If I do find a good video I'll post it, I promise. For now just trust me.

Q: Well I'm sold. Where do I get it?
A: I recommend Steam [http://store.steampowered.com/app/6910/]. It's the best 10 bucks you will spend on video games in a long, long time. If you don't like Steam then you can try Gametap [http://www.gametap.com/video-games/Deus-Ex-20000321-40.html], but I can't tell you anything about that. Don't bother looking for it in stores. Don't bother getting it on a console (this reminds me, I guarantee that your computer will be able to run this game. It's from 2000, I mean geez).

Q: I heard there are mods for this game. Are there any I should install before I play for the first time?
A: No.

Q: Oh my god I bought the game and the first level it is terrible i cant hit antying and i wanna go home
A: The first level is actually pretty bad. You have no cool augmentations, your skills are lower than low, and you feel pretty powerless and limited in your options. Suck it up, it's all worth it when you become an invisible building-jumping dumpster-hurling head-shotting jackass about a third of the way through the game.

Q: Whew I started over now, any tips?
A: Just three. First, make sure your Computers skill is at least at "Trained". Second, take the GEP Gun. Third, don't look at any walkthroughs or spoilers until you beat the game.

Q: I've already played this game two dozen times and it's my favourite game ever and i want to have JC's babies oh goooood
A: This will also be the Deus Ex discussion thread. Talk about your favourite augs, weapons, characters, ending, or if you found something cool to do take some screenshots and show it off! Just avoid spoilers for all the clueless DX newbies who will surely buy this game after reading this post~

Just a final word. You owe it to yourself to try this game. It is the finest combination of RPG and FPS that there ever was and ever will be. You may have problems with it at first. It may seem outdated, frustrating, archaic, and downright bad at first glance. It will take time for things to "click" but when they do, the results are magical. This is a spectacular video game and you will not regret playing it.

Let's talk about Deus Ex.

I tried it, and you're right, the first level was shit. It's still shit even if you take out all the game breaking bugs. But because you gave that nice walkthrough I'll try it again.

Deus Ex is a neat game. I got stuck on this one part though, and I'm gonna start the game over.

Had it on a console; was too young back then to really give it a go.
Its one of those games that I always wanted to get into, but it kept slipping to the back of my mind.

No it is not. Yes I am singing of its glory but it is just an informative first post for people who have never heard of it.

I added a video to the first post. It's part of a series of a person doing a nonlethal run. I figure I can at least show new players what to expect for the first level or so. Just don't watch more than that one video. Don't even watch Liberty Island 2/3. Just that one video.
edit: ugh nevermind I took it out. It's just something that has to be played rather that watched.

Bought it, installed it, tried to play, couldn't.
Tried again afew times, bought and finished Half Life 1 in that time.
Went back to it. Best game I have ever played. Preordered the sequel. (lets not talk about that though)
[small]/short sentances[/small]

I've replayed this game (DX1) afew times and found afew new things, introduced it to some non gamer friends and actually turned them into PC gamers because of it.

Haven't replayed for awhile, and I'm seriously considering going for it now. That's not even just because of "that Dues Ex image that states someone reinstalls every time its mentioned".

I've actually never played Invisible War but I heard it's really bad. Anyways it's always fun to try for new gimmicks after you've exhausted all possible play styles. Try some of the things on this [http://www.it-he.org/deus.htm] page. I haven't done them myself, but I'd like to do some of the skyscraper stuff in Hong Kong.
also don't read any of those things if you haven't played before

Good job. Too many people get frustrated in the first few minutes of the game and never try it again.

It's not that bad. Just nowhere near as good as DX.

It had less bio upgrades and no RPG stat upgrades such as small weapons/swimming (which is a stat you defiantly need if your having your first playthrough.)

The interface was made for a console and a chocolate bar will take the same amount of space in your inventory as a rocket launcher. I didn't understand why they downgraded things from the best game I'd played and made it worse... they could have just made it better. Played through the game with a slight tear and a sense of "why is it doing this?".

Plus once you get a sniper rifle you can one shot almost anything, oh and EVERY weapon uses the same ammo. The more I think about it the more I'll remember was simplified, so I'm going to shut up.

What's that link you sent me? I basically skimmed and it seems like a walkthrough? Sorry if I'm totally of with that prejudice...

Yeah the main part of that page is just a humorous walkthrough. The three links near the top, under "Subsections" contain the most gimmicky [http://www.it-he.org/deus3.htm] stuff [http://www.it-he.org/deus4.htm] I've ever seen done in a video game. I just gave you the wrong links that's all

I appreciate you informing those who havn't heard of the game, but how could you leave out the Nameless mod. That just seems irresponsible.

Absolutely my favorite game of all time. This and System Shock 2 are fps-rpg masterpieces. Deus Ex not only has great gameplay, it is an intelligent game with an intriguing story. I'm hoping the third one will be good, because Invisible War SUCKED!

Yeah well in my opinion you don't need any mods for Deus Ex. I guess if you somehow became bored of the actual game you could try the the Nameless Mod. There's full voice-acting support, handcrafted quests, hand placed special items, and 15-20 hours of gameplay in massive sprawling levels apparently. It's just that this thread is meant for people who have never played the game or they played it once and gave up... that's why I posted in the OP that you should just play the game vanilla. But we could talk mods if you like. What do you think of the Nameless Mod?

Well first of all this sounds like advertising, which is bad. Second of all I tried the game and the first level made me give up on it. Of course I've heard only good stuff, perhaps I will try it again (hey I wasted 10 bucks on beyond good and evil which didn't even work on my computer at least I know this works).

Invisible war was a TERRIBLE follow up. They stripped out so much of the game that basically it could have been put in a different world and had a better reaction. That said, the original is still one of the best games I've ever played simply because of the amount of choices you can make. Also you can play through the entire game and only have to kill 1! person.

Btw, Warren Spector (the brain behind this) is developing Deus Ex 3, don't know any more recent news other than "it exists"

ah Deus Ex. WHENEVER you mention it, someone out there will reinstall it.
That would be me, if I didn't have it constantly installed on at least one computer in my house.
