To any one who hasen't played it yet, I recommend playing the sequel first (deus Ex Invisible War. It's a good game, but nowhere near as good as the original. If you play the original you will absolutly hate the second.

I'd have to disagree - The second exposes all three endings of the first. Your point is definitely valid, though - Take 'Deus Ex' out of the title, and it turns into a decent game.

I don't think it's possible to get stuck because you don't have enough picks or explosives or whatever. Unless you really screw with the game and the AI there's ALWAYS a way to move forward.

Oh, you bastard...

That'll be me.

Had it on a console; was too young back then to really give it a go.
Its one of those games that I always wanted to get into, but it kept slipping to the back of my mind.
For the love of GOD don't play it on a home console, it's watered down. The location health system is replaced with a health bar, among other terrible, terrible things.

Mainly because it was garbage. I have a friend who played 2 first, but will never play the original. I slap him every time I see him and bring that up.

I sure as hell don't have high hopes for 3, either. The only good thing I've heard from it so far are the facial animations giving away when people are lying or not, other than that, it sounds terrible. Not to mention they bashed the first game, the fucking game that started it all.

I tried it, and you're right, the first level was shit. It's still shit even if you take out all the game breaking bugs. But because you gave that nice walkthrough I'll try it again.
You've probably just lost a lot of credibility from older gamers who played during the "Golden Age" of gaming. Well done.

Curiously I just posted not 3 minutes ago, in another thread, that Deus Ex is one of the best games of all history.
The fist game I ever finished thoroughly, and one of the ones I still would like to reply regardless of technical anachronisms.
An absolute delight.

It is a shame that it cannot be found in stores any longer. I remember not 3 years ago I even found a copy for the Mac in a vox populi outlet like Amazon or some place like such.

Kill Anna Navarre instead of letting her kill the prisoner and the game GOES WITH IT
Yeah I never tried it because I assumed you couldn't but then I accidentally misplaced a LAM and BOOOM

Best moment in games ever..

Deus Ex is the whole reason I started using Steam. Being able to buy and download it again made the process worth it.

Unfortunately the endings disappointed me. All three of them. The choices really only boil down to 3 very strange pseudo philosophical concepts. When your only choices end up being a new age of Luddites (because for some reason you can't have freedom with technology), a Machiavellian conspiracy founded on the same fallacy as MJ12, or a some absolutely lackluster techno-Randian scenario. Atlas Yawned indeed.

I enjoyed playing it first time around, but remember hating the AI, which made stealth completely useless. Even if you climbed up 4 stories and picked a man off with the stealth pistol, all of his mates would immediately spot you and still be able to shoot you from a mile away even if their eyes were closed and their trigger fingers mangled to bloody pulps.

I heard that they did away with universal ammo for DX3 and thought "wow was that actually in Invisible War? Good for them" Then they go ahead and add regenerating health and a cover system. But I really lost it when I read
In DX3, stats have been removed from the act of shooting and instead relies on your ability to target with your mouse and keyboard.
You still get skill points but you spend them on upgrading guns and augs. "Skill" indeed. Let's not talk about DX3 for now.
edit: actually, where did you hear them bashing DX1? I haven't seen that yet.

I don't care if it was the ugliest game I've seen in a decade, I still think it was great. I just reinstalled it. Now I've got to go and waste the obligatory ten hours of my life...thanks for that.

(Sung to Deus Ex main tune):

Puuut on a trench coat,
and fiiight some conspiracies,
get experience, and level up abilities,
will you pick riiifles ooor computers,
don't pick swimming because it's fairly useless...

YES! I did this! I put a LAM by the door, so she blew herself up as she walked in. Made a fucking lovely mess :D

[/quote]

Fool. Just grab the explosive cans down in the cargo area, put them in the way of the door and the AI will go "Hmm. It seems that I am not moving through this door as scripted. Door may be closed. Activate door. This closes the door, damaging the barrles and leaving a bloody pulp without any chance of error, no LAM cost and keeping you out of harm's way.

... You *****, now I really want to watch that video again but I can't remember which review it was. Also, for all it's flaws swimming is a godsend in the later game. Paris, Hong Kong (Not that late, I know, but still) and the minisub base are much better played with high swim.

On topic, as soon as the HDTP is finished, I'm gonna install that and have me a Rambo playthrough. HDTP refers to the High Definition Texture Package, and yes, it is as awesoem as it sounds for this reason alone:

i have played this game, and while i thought it was pretty brilliant, i never got around to finish it. this is mainly because i'm not really a pc gamer. i do still think it's pretty awesome though. basically just went with the walking tank method, always good!

No it is not. Yes I am singing of its glory but it is just an informative first post for people who have never heard of it.

Lots of people, mostly console gamers. People born after the early 90s. The current generation of gamers who have been growing up on the 360 and Wii. There are even some PC gamers I've talked to that have only heard the name of the game once and then forgot about it.
