Most people dissappointed with the DNF demo complained about some very odd design desicions.
First of all you can only have 2 weapons and switch them in a copy of the halo 1 system. this doesn't really work as 3d realms level design requires you to rapidly change qwickly between multiple weapons.
Also the "mighty boot" was replaced by halos melee system.

Here's a Devs response to the topic:
http://www.shacknews.com/chatty?id=26031903#itemanchor_26031903

They dumbed the amount of weapons down because of a lack of buttons on controllers and while they where alright with doing tweaks for the consoles they where to lazy to fix DNF for keyboard and mouse and allow the cut features on pc.

DNF was really damaged by the multiplatform release, a selection wheel for consoles would have worked in my opinion but hey now the design is bad on both platforms for blandness sake.
Avoid, get Alice or Deus ex. the deus ex team apparantly gave a shit.

For those of you interested of how the demo looks, here's a playthrough of it:

As for my own thoughts on this; I wanted Duke. Not ½Duke.

Wait, what?... They dumbed down the amount of weapons due to controller restraints? I remember Resistance: Fall of Man have a weapon wheel that worked quite well. As for the mighty boot... I'm assuming thats some kind of kick?. Like the one in Bulletstorm maybe?.... What the hell..

See, there is something wrong when a sentence has "dumbed down" and "Duke Nukem" in the same breath.

I am honestly dumbstruck by this.

I have to admit I am a PC elitest, but this is so damn sad.

A core game that was on the pc and even refined what could be done with an FPS is now dumbed down because of console... sigh.

Well part of what used to make a demo useful for developers is that it provided a barometer for playtesting by their target audience.

The topic title seems intentionally provocative and knee-jerk; I too am reserving judgment for after I play the demo myself.

Well at least now we know for sure that it will make good fodder for Yahtzee's wrath.

You were excited about DNF but don't know what the Mighty Boot is? This is fair if you didn't play Duke 3D, but I always find it weird that people could be worked up about DNF if they have no nostalgic attachment - I can't wait for DNF but I was always pretty sure it wasn't going to be great.

There ya go

OT: As I've said in 4 or 5 other threads, I'm going to wait until DNF is a $20 bargain bin game before I pick it up. It sucks that you can't use Duke as a walking armory and I can think of 2 ways off the bat to make up for it: use the shoulder buttons (R1+R2 or LB+RB) to switch between weapons or, use the D-PAD. Oh well: as the OP said, I'll continue to look forward to Alice and Deus Ex.

Yeah exactly a ton of weapons works fine on consoles.
And Resitance was great.
I assume gearbox wanted the exact same health, melee and weapon system as halo for familiarity reasons.
now it plays bland and doesn't fit everything else in the game.

This is a load of crap. Console games are capable of having more than 2 weapons at a time. They just want to jump on the console tards bandwagon so they don't have to admit that they did a lazy job and couldn't give a shit.

Oh wtf....No! Cmon, gearbox, seriously not cool, you knew people were gonna be pissy about this but figured it was k so long as you could bring it to the console crowd for more profits?

That already shows a bad mentality: $ comes before the actual game (yeah stupid to be surprised at this I know)

Not being arsed to fix this for pc version is just...Well shows maybe they ain't putting in as much effort as we might like to think ¬¬ In the end this is gonna be fixed by modders, but not cool gearbox, not cool at all.

Also wtf is up with replacing the mighty boot? That is heresy if ever I heard it.

"Dumbed down because of consoles"

That's bullshit and they know it. Ever remember the massive weapon ensemble in Timesplitters? That's why we still have the directional pad on our controllers.

Too many people are taking the easy way out, look at Dragon Age 2 for example. "Dumbed down for consoles" is now the catchphrase for Devs doing a half assed job at something (DA2) or want to copy another more successful game (DNF) and get out of the shitstorm smelling like roses.

Also can someone tell me again why there's no keyboard/mouse support for our console games? I mean they have USB interface and recognise a keyboard input... it's just lazy developers cashing in on a quick scapegoat.

Wow. That's utter stupidity. Why couldn't they just have a weapon wheel instead? One of the core elements of Duke is having a gigantic array of insane weapons. Only 2 does NOT suit this type of game.

Who is this admiralty? Are they the one we need to talk to about this?

Yea, didn't play Duke 3D. To be entirely honest, I didn't play FPS's until this generation (apart from Goldeneye), but I think it's not necessary to have played the game to still have some form of nostalgia attached to the name Duke Nukem.
But I've been wrong in the past. Does the fact that I have not played Duke 3D mean that I don't know what the character is about or what the feel of the game should be like?

In case this sounds kind of dickish, I'm sorry, I didn't mean for it to be.

The ps2 supported keyboard and mouse pretty well, just plug it in to the usb.
it oviously isn't a technical challenge. I assume its because they don't want to give part of their playerbase a big advantage over the rest. (but dnf is single player >.<)

Yeah the dumbed down thing is because of limited budget, they take the cheapest way out which is developing for the lowest common denominator.
If a developer cares and can afford it dumbing down never happens. Obisoft made Assassins creed brotherhood play great with keyboard and mouse because they care, didn't think that feat was even reachable.
Thats my point actually Gearbox didn't care about they're game (don't think limited weapons works for consoles either) so why should we?

Don't worry it doesn't - I was worried that my initial statement was dickish to be honest. Wasn't meant as a personal attack on you, just an observation on the hype DNF is getting which I don't really understand.

And yeah I guess you're right. I don't think there is anything to "get" when it comes to Duke since it's not exactly high brow humour. If you've followed the advertising and found it funny then that's pretty much all there is too it.
