Well, if the changes you make doesn't FEEL any different from what's come out in the past you can't really justify whining about the potential of easy-to-change coding in the engine.
If a consumer bought something and didn't enjoy it because it felt exactly like something else just a little bit better that robbed him/her of more money you can't expect this person to give you as a developer any sympathy.
Not even something that's a had lots of time and effort put into it will survive long if it doesn't feel original in some way. See Duke Nukem Forever for referance.
