Wonder if it's some sort of curse: "You can either be a good writer, or a good game designer, you can't have both. Choose wisely!"
Possible. I'm a fair hand at writing but I can't do a thing with any kind of code.
Seems to be a trend.

And that explains the entirety of Gears of War.

COLE TRAIN anyone?
To be fair, it's not like anyone (sane) actually played Gears of War for the plot.
My favorite (and best) subject in High School was (well, is--got another month) English, but I'm majoring in physics. I can kind of do both.

Games where every other word is ALL CAPS for the sake of CONVENIENCE, just because SOME IDIOT is too LAZY to PROGRAM individual WORDS for PROPER CAPITALIZATION.

(Sorry, couldn't Resist)

This may be more of a voice acting problem but:
House of the Dead: 2 - Every line in the entire game

I remember playing this game on the Dreamcast (pretty sure it was 2, if it wasn't forgive me) and my friend and I started up the campaign, at the first dialogue lines we just BURST out laughing

Pretty much all of the dialog in Just Cause 2, Bolo Santosi in particular. Don't get me wrong, the game itself is excellent, but sometimes the voice acting and lines are so bad, I have to wonder if they weren't doing a spoof of video game dialog.
Bad writing in Just Cause 2?

i just got to that part as i was reading this lol awesome i gotta love ninjas

Any time you hear NPCs in Oblivion conversing, you know it'll be full of fail.

Also, while I haven't seen this clip yet, my friend claims that Haze has one of the most fail lines ever that made him die laughing:

Some Old Dude: Son, do you know what the key to winning a war is?
Main Character: (In a totally over the top, retarded sounding voice) BULLETS!!!?

I haven't seen the scene yet, so I can't confirm, but it sounds pretty lame.

Both of those in the OP annoy me, but in both instances, they take place in worlds where the focus is not really the NPCs, it's the joys of combat and character growth.

Pressing x repeatably in Mass Effect 1 or 2 when talking to a Volus is basically the sound of rhythmic breathing.

Jagged Alliance 2: Ira.

The delivery of "She is evil, a driven *****." is so awkward it hurts.

Then after laying waste to garrisons in two towns and a number of enemy patrols she still says "The army! I knew we'd see them sooner or later" every time she sees a soldier.

Her and Skyrider helicopter pilot. Everyone else in the game is gold.

"Every once in a while, I need to pull all of my hair out. I don't know why, but it grows back!" classic.

Oh god, Ira needs headshooting. Especially when you compare her to Fox, Shadow or any of the others who actually make you feel what they're saying.

Fox's transition from perky to gloomy is particularly moving.
