.
Maybe because it was trying to do its own thing instead of aping Metroidvania? Considering how prior to LoS people complained about annual Metroidvania releases becoming more and more samey, it would make perfect sense for them to go in a different direction.
I do somewhat agree with this (Not that i think the amount of DS releases were a problem (3 games with a lot of space between them, excellent games i might add), but i wouldn't mind something new. The problem with LoS is that they discarded EVERYTHING related to the series, they only kept the story (and who the hell cares about story in a Castlevania game?). The stables of the series is the art style (romantized horror that resembles church mosaics with lots of references to gothic horror and classic mythology), music that mixes rock and classic tunes, all very memorable and theme driven and humour. Obviously there's also some stables like hearts, bats, medusa heads and the like, the gameplay is less important, just something vaguely related to platforming.. Unfortunately LoS discarded everything and went it's own way, which is fine to some degree, but if you change everything, how do you expect people to recognize the franchise?
LoS is Castlevania in name only and it would probably have been a better game if the goal wasn't to basically bury the Castlevania name and ressurect it as something new. We might never see a game that features any of the things that made me such a big fan of the franchise, all the things we might never see again because all future Castlevania games will build on the grimdark tone of LoS.
