I don't like L4D that much. I like precision in shooters.I like when the victory is based upon skill. My impression is that there's not much of this in the aforementioned game. But the thing that boggles me is that you're really insulting not only L4D fans, but game fans in general.Look - I'm a theoretical physicist(which doesn't make me a genius, but you could surmise that I'm at least of an average intelligence[way above average if you look at the statistics]), but I'd rather play Earth Defence Force with my friends, or F.E.A.R., or even Serious Sam over a session with Bioshock any day of the week.Does that make me an ignorant cretin ?

One more thing - HL and Portal are not half as clever as you seem to think they are.The puzzles in HL are simplistic and can be solved by any halfwit.Using the notion of an intellectual to describe Valves games fanbase is a bit of an exaggeration - even within the video games industry context.

P.S.

Counter-strike has followers that really enjoy highbrow "stuff".

No, I don't think Valve has been spoiled by L4D. I just see progression.

HL1 was different than HL2 in my opinion. In the first one, you didn't have to think too hard, just move forward. Jumping puzzles, switches and doors, boss battles have all been done but in the first game it was done with a level of atmosphere that pulled you in. I picked to stay in the tram at the end of the HL1 and after seeing the second ending, I firmly believe that my first choice was the right one.

Playing through HL2 was different for me. Nothing really made me want to keep going in the game. I just wanted to get out of that damn lab/fort in the first one. In the second one I just wanted to shoot myself.

CS,TF,HL and all it's mods was a great game but still nothing in the game required more intelligence that what is needed in HL2. Hell, Counterstike doesn't have a story.

Portal while having a story like HL1 {i.e. Escape the Base!} the level design is made so that even young children can enjoy the game. The game gradually explains to you how to use your gun, it doesn't just dump you in the dungeon and not explain gun, tactics, setting, etc.

L4D is more a like an evolved version of CS. CS was supposed to be team based but I have seen matches where one player would practically win the game while his team-mates die. L4D changes it so that you need teamwork to survive if your human. I would consider L4D to be the more smarter audience than the HL audience.

One thing that keeps it a little like the other Valve games is the great humor, atleast I and my friends have goten some good laughs from the intentional humor, alot more from the unintentional tho xD. Like sometimes you can find "hidden" funny dialogue while for example leaving Louis outside the safe house even tho he's like right outside the door being incaped.

I loved reading the edit at the bottom of the OP. I could just smell that this guy was going to get piles of crap from everyone who resented being called an prepubescent idiot for playing L4D. Combine that with the poster trying to take the intellectual high ground while misspelling 'intellectual' and claiming that because he's trying to learn other languages, he can't spell in English anymore, and you've got a nice thread filled with easy refutations of his 'arguments.'
