Did the original Link sprite have green eye makeup?

I have no idea why I'm noticing this now but why does Link have green eyelids, or are they eyebrows?

Unless those are supposed to be the white's of his eyes.... except green...

I think they just wanted to keep the color palette as small as possible, and thought most people would just mentally fill in the gaps while playing.

I personally saw him as having green eyes. That way, he's always looking up instead of down.
