Did the things I liked as a kid suck?

I'm a Power Rangers fan. Been watching the series on and off since its inception. Some of the seasons, like Lightspeed Rescue, Lost Galaxy, and SPD are fantastic, and still totally watchable today.

I recently went back to watch some of the first season. Good lord, I'm not entirely sure what I saw in this thing to begin with. There's enough ham and cheese in one episode to make dozens of sandwiches.

All I can remember of the show from watching it as a kid was waiting for the monster to get big and for the Megazord to show up and kick it's ass, since that was always the best part. But the parts where they're just teenagers doing teenager stuff? God, it's so tedious.

I still maintain that there's alot of good seasons in there, but the first one REALLY needs nostalgia goggles to be viewed today.

Yeah I rewatched Ghostbusters 2 for the first time in about a decade and a half a couple months ago and it wasn't nearly as good as I remembered. You shouldn't panic though, some of the things you liked as a kid sucked, but not all of them did. Batman TAS is good, though the first season was rough in places. I've never seen Street Sharks but yeah it probably is a giant pile of trash, at least last I saw you could get all 40 episodes for like ten bucks, so find out for yourself.

I think everyone has a moment like this at some point in their lives. For me it was watching the 1980s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon for the first time as an adult, which was also about the first time I'd seen it post-Kindergarten. I still love it for the warm happy childhood feels but yeah, not as cool as I perceived it to be at the time.

Recent examples include Buffy the Vampire Slayer (now firmly re-established as my favourite TV show of all time), Star Trek Voyager, Deep Space Nine and TOS, a whole bunch of Disney movies, and the 1968 BBC radio adaptation of The Hobbit.
I've never "got" Buffy, probably because I was exposed to the comedy movie first, shame since it has a lot of elements of things I love. However I notice Star Trek: The Next Generation is conspicuously absent from your list?

I hated DS9 as a kid (thought it was too grim for Star Trek) but I finally just recently finished watching the show from start to finish and I have to say it was pretty good[footnote]Though I don't think I was ever once convinced by the performance of the actress playing Jadzia Dax. So when she was on screen it would often pull me out of the episode.[/footnote]. The first 2 or 3 seasons were a bit dull but nowhere near as offensively bad as TNG's first season. What do you think of TAS? I actually like it more than most of TOS season 3.

Not at the time, no. I enjoyed what I enjoyed when I was young, and I enjoy what I enjoy now that I am older.

As I changed and grew, so did my interests. It's not that unusual.

What would be unusual is if you were an adult with the interests of a 9 year old. It'd be like you never... you know, grew up.

A better comparison is... what did you like when you were 20, and how have you changed when you become 30? And then 40? And then 50? And then 75? And then... well, you probably stop caring at like 55 actually.

I guess... but then again to be fair the things you like right now probably suck too.

For me though I find it more that I'm noticing alot of current films and tv shows that I consider disappointing now that I probably would have loved if I'd only seen them a few years younger than I am now.

Oh I love TNG, I just haven't re-watched it recently. Never seen TAS - I'm not even sure if it aired over here.

DS9 is definitely the one that's benefited most from going back to it as an adult. I haven't got through the whole thing yet, but I actually really like the longer, slower story arcs now that my attention span's developed a bit. I don't even think the early seasons are as boring as most people claim. And I just can't bring myself to say anything negative about Dax - she was one of my first crushes (along with Seven of Nine, obviously. [small]And to think it took me so long to come out[/small]) :p

Yes, good gods, yes, a lot of what you liked as a kid is terrible, and you didn't realize it before because of nostalgia goggles and being less selective about what caught your interests. We couldn't tell you any sooner, Tim (that's probably NOT your name...)but, as Glinda put it, "Would you have believed us if we had just told you?"

Most likely, yes. A word of warning: Do not, I repeat, DO NOT rewatch the original He-Man animated series. Just... don't.

This... This right here is fightin words. Unless, of course, you are referring to the god awful real life guest star episodes or the Scrappy Doo thing. I'm waiting. <.<

But of course some of your tastes are going to change. I used to watch a children's show religiously as a young child and now I absolutely hate it. No, I will not tell you which one. I am ashamed. However, for the most part things I liked as a kid I still like to some degree.

I went back and watched Beast Wars again. Let's just say: I'd have been better off sticking with my distorted childhood perception.

I remember losing my shit to Ren & Stimpy.

I re-watched it in my 30's. It was bad. They blazed the trail for "adult(ish)" cartoons like Family Guy and South Park, but sadly Ren & Stimpy doesn't stand the test of time.

Yeah I'm obviously in a tiny minority about Dax. There was a really weird poll on the official Star Trek website recently. "Which female Trek character would you like to be stuck on a planet with?" Jadzia came in 2nd place with 23% of the vote. Who do you think beat her for the #1 spot? Seven of Nine, and only by a few hundred votes. http://www.startrek.com/article/female-trek-character-trek-youd-like-to-be-stuck-on-a-planet-with-is (both of my top picks got 4% lol)

PS- And yeah when you eventually do get around to rewatching TNG be prepared, as I mentioned earlier the first season is really rough. The series doesn't hit its stride until about the 3rd season.

Taste changes over time, the media remains the same. Some things are bound to become better as we grow older just as some things will be worse. As a kid i hated Blade Runner, now i think it's brilliant and as a kid i thought Jurassic Park was the greatest thing ever, i still kinda do, but for different reasons than back then. And i grew tired of Independence Day, now that i'm more mature. Naturally some things are going to seem less appealing now than they did through the eyes of a 9 year old just as some things are going to seem more appealing.

I remember that i really enjoyed a tv show where a family accidentaly crashed into the prehistoric times, i rewatched it recently and it was the most awful 90s thing i have seen in a while. Kids like some stupid things, but most of the movies i enjoyed still hold up. I can still see why Young Guns is awesome and the Alien movies are better than ever. I am pretty sure though, that the 9 year old me would hate most of the movies i enjoy these days :p.

I watched so much kid's anime before I even knew what it was. The only ones that still hold up for me are Digimon and DBZ. There's a lot of hate on this thread for Dragon Ball Z but honestly I could never appreciate a lot of it until I was an adult. Sure it's long as hell with ropey voice acting but between Dragon Ball Z Abridged and Dragon Ball Z Kai you've two up-to-snuff versions to pick from these days.

I remember my friend really getting me into Beyblade as a kid and that show sucks all kinds of ass. It's basically just spinning tops hitting each other until a main character screams and pulls out a win. Same goes for Yu-Gi-Oh; it was always a card you'd probably never seen before that conveniently does everything required to take the enemy's last life points.

Live action suffered even worse. As a child there were two films I totally worshipped and watched on a daily basis. Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers the Movie is a poorly written, badly acted disaster of a film with some of the worst CG I've ever seen. The other one is the Phantom Menace - pretty self explanatory.
