I hate to be stereotypical and say that I grew up Christian and then started thinking differently, but Id be lying if I said differently. Both sides of my family were very christian, but for some reason we never went to church regularly. I prefer to think spirituality is a very personal thing that you have to think about yourself. I say Im agnostic because its easier than actually explaining what I think. This tends to be a complicated subject for me.

Lets just leave it at, not christian, think Buddhists are hilarious, and vegans tick me off.
Its a lot easier when you stop caring about justification for your beliefs.

Sort of. My parents have never been "hardcore Christians" (going to church every Sunday etc.) but I'm pretty sure they still believe in something, whereas I don't. So they're more agnostic while I'm more of an atheist. They've never given me any hell for it though.

I went from being Atheist to being a Pagan. I never didn't believe just thought I was an atheist because my parents were. Hehe, it is the exact reverse of the majority of the situations ;D Nothing specific yet since my parents would just be condescending pricks about me practicing something.

I can, however, point at Wiccan and say, "Pretty much that."

EDIT: This spawned from growing up in a small town that actively incorperated First Nations' beliefs into our schooling to try and make less racists (or white supremacists, like my parents). I grew up hearing their beliefs on the world and believed them. I stopped when I moved away until I realized that the elitist Atheists were entirely wrong about religion (stuff like religious people are stupid is what I mean here).

I plan to read the Bible because my exclusively Atheist family doesn't 'get it'. Maybe if you read it, you would. Maybe if you weren't closed-minded elitists, you would.

I stopped believing in a god once I read the bible (went to an Anglican school, they would never show us the terrible things in the bible, only the good stuff. And there is plenty fo good stuff, but also enough bad stuff for any sane person to realize the god in the bible is not perfect therefore it is completely fraudulent.

Anyone who still believes in the god of the bible after actually reading the bible must be insane. I've found consistently the atheists know the bible better than a lot of Christians. I'm sorry but the god of the bible is a blood thirsty monster. And don't get me started on the Koran.

And this is BEFORE you get to the lack of evidence.
Buddy, this topic clearly says not to start any flame wars. You have to remember that noone can interpret the original bible and people are corrupt. Don't start a fight on this or I will report you.
I don't hold back in regards to religion. No one should be scared to call religion on it's bullshit. The threat of censorship and the ridiculous belief that religion should be revered is what keeps it alive.

Actually, most atheists now the Bible better than Christians.
Nah, that's the point. My family is really shitty atheists who don't bother to have any intellectual basis for their argument. Kinda like a Fundamentalist Christian doesn't EVER interpret the Bible in a new or interesting way, my Fundamentalist Atheist family won't even read it cause it's stupid. 'Most' is they key word. We aren't making mass generalizations here, we're talking about personal experience with the occasional total retard (or the life-long association with the un-intellectual).

Nothing wrong with not reading the Bible, some people just don't like fiction. To each their own.
Basing judgements on the validity of another religion usually requires having knowledge of their beliefs first no matter your opinion on the matter.

Raised Catholic, began to think Buddhism is quite reasonable.
Became a Cathodist for a while, and thought of self as agnostic.
Is currently atheist.

Simply suggest that your family not talk about any religion they don't really know anything about?

Perhaps that may help you...

Raised in a very secular Jewish home, got really interested in religion at around 20. Read a lot about all the different religions out there and took some Jewish and general philosophy at the university.

Following one specific religion feels stupid when you know there are literally hundreds of them out there, most of them saying 'We Are The Only Truth'. So, I'm making my own religion as I go along. I'm actually thinking about writing a book about it some day, maybe I can add another religion to the hundreds out there. Now I just have to decide what to call it.

I think I was Christian when I was a kid, but then most kids are. My parents are athiest/agnostic, but I went to a Catholic school and they always talked about God as though he was definetely, no contest, real, so I just went with it. Parents just didn't bother talking about it much.

Then one day in maths, I'm thinking about it, and I realised, a lot of it is simply very silly. Then I went to a new-age school full of hippies where everyone liked to do the God debate.

I became an atheist over the past year after learning that certain bible verses that didn't conform with my understanding of Christanity exist and deciding to look into the issue further. My family is Christian though accepting and they, thankfully, all except for my dad and sometimes my brother have fallen out of the habbit of going to church.

I used to be anglican when I was a frightened kid, but now I'm an athiest. I often surprise the christians I meet who try their hardest to convert me, and find that I know more scripture than they do. It's fun, I suggest you try it.
But seriously, I figured out after a while that I was involved in an intellectual slum, and gave up on religion as anything but an element of history.

Started out Christian. Became Agnostic (very close to becoming Atheist, actually). Did some soul searching and some more in-depth study of philosophy and now I am Roman Catholic.
