That's why you had to have read the comic. The movie doesn't seem to delve too much into Dr. Manhattan's character, not as much as the comic at least. The comic depicts Jon as a flawed God. He knows all, yet cannot share his knowledge. He sees all, but fails to show. He is forced to relive his past failures, experience his present vices, and see his future mistakes before they even happen. I don't think the movie did enough justice to Osterman, and that's one of my only disappointments in the movie.
Also, something a lot of people have brought up: the ending. The squid-monster ruined the almost realistic events of the novel in my opinion, and the atomic explosion in the movie worked more in real terms. I preferred this ending.
Another thing: The soundtrack was simply amazing.
