OH GAWD

You made me laugh so hard just then.

OT: Sony won't pull out. They've gone this far, the exec's won't run from this alone. Now if a disaster like this happened one or more times within the next five years Sony would likely stop.

Pseudo-monopoly.

Actually... sony probably wont even leave the race. They'll become sega, where they're third party and go back to their none videogame profits.

Yeah, this is a real possibility. Then again maybe Northern America blasts off into space and settles on Mars, thereby causing Microsoft to leave the race.
Is that a challenge? My fellow Americans, start building your space-homes.

But yeah, Sony will recover eventually. They're a bit big to fall from just this.

Sony will bounce back, they lost how many formats before BluRay dominated the new DVD market? Lost how much money on trying to implement UMD, MiniDisc, BetaMax, etc.?
They're kings of sinking money into WINNING.
Granted, I am not a PS3 fan, but I feel for PSN users at this point and sure some are going to jump ship (those who can afford to). But I doubt they'll lose their customer base. Unless developers decide to jump ship, then we could see a SEGA Dreamcast style memorial for PS3 in the future.
Thats the big one there. Developers who aren't making money of DLC and can't release new product intended for online play could get fed up and say ADIOS MOFO!

The exact same thing could have happened to Microsoft, people need to stop blaming Sony and blame the hackers

It would be good if they scrapped PSN altogether and just used Steam on the PS3... Can you imagine?

Basically, we all know sony is currently in a shitstorm of epic proportions. I doubt very much it would cause bankruptcy, but on the other hand, Sony closing the videogame section (specially since it is such a huge money drain, at least console wise) seem like a very plausible scenario.

Thing is, well, we all know Nintendo, though I wuv them so, has lost a shit ton of cred among the more active gamers and well, that pretty much leaves microsoft alone till Nintendo gets it's act together on that front. Basically, there is a big fat void, and somebody is probably thinking of how to fill it. My big q to you people is who do you think might have a chance to get into the race and try and recover the usual third front?

Maybe apple tries to branch into the gaming market? Though they don't really need to, but hey, would allow more penis contests with microsoft. Maybe one of the big japan boys like Capcom or Konamy or even an alliance of a few will get ballsy and give it a try? Maybe it will be the advent of onlive what will cause the flow to change?

Or maybe we get worse scenario and get pseudomonopoly.

Anyway, come on in and discuss what you feel might happen.
i wouldnt be too surprised to see a google console one day. i mean fuck, they're trying to monopolize everything else. its a goofy idea but i dont think its entirely out of the question. would be nice to see the return of sega but i dont think its in the cards

Yep. This sounds likely. Sony is going to take all that cash they've already spent on developing the PS4 and just decide to put it down as a loss. Should make a heck of a tax write-off.

If we had a betting pool, I'd put money on IBM. I mean they built a Jeopardy-playing computer, imagine what they could do if they applied that AI to game characters.
DO YOU WANT TO FEEL LIKE SHIT IN AI VS GAYMES?!?! Srs tho, I could see Nintendo with there new system really filling a hole here.

I personally don't really see the need for someone else to step in and take Sony's shoes in this theoretical scenario. The PS3 and 360 are so similar now that it is (arguably) pointless to actually have both in our current case. In the end the consoles (360 vs PC vs PS3) just end up being a few exclusive titles and different controllers. I personally wouldn't mind seeing the PC make a comeback and getting more solid games (less ports) in the market should Sony make a fall.
Actually I believe the PS3 is much more powerful than the 360, and the only reason the games tend to look the same is because developers have to reduce the required power of them so they can still work on the 360. Although I do completely agree with the PC part
I debate that point only because PS3 exclusives aren't much better than the x-box ones graphics-wise... while MGS or uncharted are good-looking, i wouldn't say they dominate x-box. If your were right, this would not be the case :I

I think the essential point of games is being lost in a shitstorm of who is better. As a gamer I want the most "entertainment" value from my "games" as possible. I realize, that in a world of diminishing social structure, more and more people take gaming to be a representation of real life accomplishments. So called achievements and leaderboards are really just the dangling carrot. Innovation drives any market, and our blind devotion to brand names is only going to impede and stall any progression.

Sony leaving the race would be a frightful indication that a second crash is underway.

And people, get real, Sega ain't coming back, which is probably for the better, if you remove the nostalgia glasses for a bit.

Wrong. I bought stuff from them. Gave them my credit card. If they lost it, they are liable.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Sega or Atari try and jump back into the race, although I really doubt Sony is going to stop.
Why would that not surprise you? There is not even an inkling that they are in the running for anything past some shitty nostalgia games o.o
