It looks more like they left a lot open for a sequel than for DLC. No sense in explaining how the whole world works in the first installment of the series.
Why would anyone assume there will be a sequel ? Unless the game was intended to be a trilogy or whatever. Even then, is it really necessary to leave out some things to be able to make a sequel? I mean really , i am no writter , but in a new IP and a world like dishonored , writting a sequel shouldn't be too difficult . They got a lot to work with , in my oppinion.

OT: I agree . It felt like more "meat" could have been added to the actual game and story

No developer would put so much effort into creating a world like Dishonored if they didn't plan to expand on it in the future. Then there's also thus: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/120838-There-Will-Be-More-Dishonored

Leaving out non-crucial information is a great way to make a sequel. For instance, the origins and motivations of the Outsider. Sure they could have put in a few books and/or 2-3 hour DLCs explaining it, but they could easily make 2 whole games off that plot point alone. Something like ... following the story of another Outsider-touched hero taking on the Abby of the Everyman wherein you learn about his origin and why they loath him so much. Then once they're out of the way make the Outsider and his followers the antagonists of the next game when he executes whatever devilish master plan he's been working on all this time.

The Outsider has almost no actual role in the story besides being mysterious, we only visit his world once for a tutorial stage, he deserved more than this time trial. Any side conflict about the Outsider v The Abbey which could have made for interesting moral choices is overlooked.
The outsider is Dishonored's G-Man, you DON'T make a plot involving him, because you cant.

Hes literally a walking Deus Ex Machina to be used at the developer's whim, and making any real info about him would murder the illusion that he's a somewhat believable Deus Ex Machina.
Actually he appears to only be there to justify the supernatural abilities. He doesn't intervene beyond that point and nothing else particularly relates to him bar some mythos stuff.

He's actually a lot like Nyarlathotep from the Cthulhu Mythos who in some stories would appear as human and grant gifts to people just to create chaos.

The only major problem I have with the game are all the special actions you can take in missions. I feel like the consequences of those were originally supposed to be apparent throughout the game but most of them have no bearing on anything.

They could have also spent more time during the prologue showing more of the relationships involved in order to give more justification behind the whole "Revenge" thing.

In Dishonored, your world literally revolves around Emily. There was just so much more I wanted to do!
It's implied at a couple of points that you are in fact Emily's father which maybe they should have made a bigger deal of in order to justify your rampant need to find her beyond just "failing" as a bodyguard.

And it also bugged me, what with all the research you keep finding, the noble's talk of the country being ripe for conquest, and the Outsider's knowledge of damn near everything, that we never did find out what the real origin of the plague was!
Uhm, actually...

*****SPOILER!******

If you take out Hiram Burrows non-lethally, it turns out he introduced them to the city to kill off poor people, basically.
Anybody with no money to buy the elixirs would die.

Yeah it's a stupid idea, but then again Burrows was a stupid man, as we know.

I personally don't see why everything should be rubbed in our faces. It seems that I am one of the few who are able to see connections between characters by actions and dialogue in a few scenes if it is intended to be shown in a few scenes. I don't need DA:O style of progress where every small detail is told me again and again.

It was personally clear to me that Corvo and Emily shared a closer connection than just princess and servant after the dream with the Outsider when he gives you your power. The few scenes with Emily until then are quite enough to show that she is affectionate towards you.
Don't get me wrong, I really liked that you had to piece some bits together and draw your conclusions. Just I see a lot of posts on other forums where they don't seem to get why Emily is so important or why Corvo would do these things. Makes sense to me.

I prefer a subtler way of story telling. Lets me get on with the game and I can take what I want from it.

In regards to DA:O I think that's why I never finished it, it really grated on me how often things get reiterated.
