Right well there have been a lot of 'favourite character' and 'least favourite character' threads about the place and now I think is a great chance to ask a serious question. We all know that a great character has a decent personality with traits that are both likeable and dislikeable. A hero might be a noble warrior at heart but still has a savage and violent nature that plagues him, something like that. A character might even be all awesome and such but be very clearly going down the wrong track. Or the character in question might just be a tiny bit annoying who then just gets worse and worse as the movie progresses. Something like that.
Like for instance one example is Rorschach from Watchmen. He has firm ethics and is frankly very awesome in his monolouges but his extreme right wing attitude is one of the things I find distasteful about him... killing people is fine and so is being a sociopath just try to be more left wing about it.
Also once again Ashley Williams from Mass Effect, I was charmed by her wit and chemistry with Shepard combined with her emotional weakness. But she had clealry been raised by her racist family and was having trouble changing her values (even though it's clear throughout the game that she is trying).
Also the Arbiter in Halo for once being a frenetic server of the prophets... fortunatley he redeemed himself.

If you could make sense of that paragraph what I'm asking is that of all characters in movies, games, books, comics and any other form of storytelling, the ones with a real well rounded dimensional scope of characterisation with the good bits and the grimy bits... what are some dislikable qualities about characters that you did like?

Hmmm...one of my favorite literary heroes is Drizzt Do'Urden from Forgotten Realms, and he's an all-around badass when he whips out his blades. However, a good amount of the time he's sitting around whining and being a general emo, which gets off-putting after awhile.

My other favorite hero, Hiroaki Protagonist from Snow Crash, has no flaws.

Hmm. The only problem with Guybrush Threepwood that I can think of is that he's a bit of a dork.

But that's partly why we love him.

I know that there seems to be a general dislike for Superman around here, because he's too good, too perfect. And it seems that those people don't honestly read the character enough to know that he does have flaws.

His big one being all the work he does to keep his human side grounded, especially after the recent passing of his father, and his Kryptonian heritage calling to him in a much more real way then before. With all the things he can do, he struggles to keep himself connected to mankind, to continue to allow himself to see the world in a truly altruistic way. It's been shown time and time again that without his resolute focus on trying to stay connected, he strays and ends up doing something awful like taking over the planet.

That, and his overwhelming love for his wife has kept him from doing his job. When Lois was in the hospital, the only thing keeping her alive being a few of Superman's abilities, he wouldn't leave her side, even though existence was in the process of being taken over by Darkseid and his anti-life equation.

Female characters seem to have a bad habit of wearing clothes the whole time. Especially one's like Yoko who aren't even wearing very much.

Holy crap. I'm reading that book AT THIS VERY MOMENT. I thought it was little known. It makes pizza delivery sound like life-or-death.

OT, Edison Trent from Freelancer is cool, but he is kinda pessimistic.

My favourite character's problem is that unless you're a very good friend of his you are likely to end up skewered by his hidden blade before you know he's there. And he's lacking in emotional connection, he needs a bit more story.

Hm. Well I mostly feel attached to villains so there shouldn't be much trouble identifying their rough spots, still, I'll list some of my favourites.

Captain MacMillan (CoD4) - although I don't know him well, I think it could be safe to say that he's kinda psycho. I mean, who the fuck runs head first into an enemy convoy hoping not to be seen (and succeeds with it?).

Guybrush Threepwood (Monkey Island) - Eh. Well. He's not very...tough.

Myles (Wizardry 8) - he's a thieving, kleptomaniac coward. You just gotta love him though.

Malcolm (UT Series) - psycho. Definetly.

N (N) - he's fragile and has a lifespan lasting 90 seconds.

I like the Spy from TF2, but unfortunately, he's French.
hahahahaha this one made me laugh
Lol. IMO pyro is cooler. The only thing I don't like about him/her is well... when he/she is on the opposite team and I'm a spy. It can get quite uncomfortably hot...

HK 47. He's the most brutal, psychopatic ,mass murdering robot ever. He despises organic life, is utterly egomaniac and insane. But he's still the best character from the Kotor games.

One of my favorite characters is Isacc from Golden Sun, but he doesn't learn how to speak until Golden Sun 2.

Hmmmm, I'm a fan of the Master Chief, but I'm not a big fan of the way he constantly obeys orders without question. Don't get me wrong, I do support the UNSC within the Halo universe, but in the books he and his fellow Spartans are told to go on missions against the Insurrectionists and never question what the Insurrectionists have really done that's so wrong. I mean, by the same line of thought, within Firefly I would support the Browncoats against the Alliance, and it's almost exactly the same thing. Any hero that follows orders without question and just assumes the enemy are the scum of the earth loses brownie points with me. Still a Master Chief fan, though.

Flashman.

He is the most horribly flawed antihero ever created. He's a coward, a liar, a bully, a thief, a selfish cad, a womanizer, a disloyal friend, a bigot, a misogynist, a braggart and a drunk.

...and that's why I love him.

Having said that, he's a natural linguist, a talented wit, a cunning strategist and a stylish rogue who gets all the wenches. Long live Brigadier General Sir Harry Paget Flashman, VC.
