I agree. The platformer parts when Limbo itself is attacking you has great potential. Too bad its connected to a simplified version of DMC's intricate and hard-to-master combat system. Let's just say I hate the added Action Buttom Commands and the GET OVER HERE moves in DMC 4 and they added that in DmC Devil May Cry and Bayonetta.
Well not so much that as they took the combat right out of Lords of Shadow, which is to say it all revolves around pulling enemies to you, or pulling yourself to them.
They turned it from combo/cancel combat with a variety of weapons to floaty light attack/heavy attack nonsense with two stances(Demon and Angel) with Demon your sword turns into an axe and you pull enemies to you, generally hit harder but slower. With Angel you get a scythe and pull yourself towards them more and hit faster but weaker. It's all western hack and slash 101 stuff really.
The funny thing is that to people who aren't familiar with the series, it will bear some semblance because they ripped some of the motions(like stinger, million stab, air rave) for their combat. So when you try to argue it they'll say something like "but he just did the same move" except not really because they did it with one button as opposed to a combination.
Basically, this is to Devil May Cry what Ninja Gaiden 3 is to Ninja Gaiden.
Edit:
Let's not forget this Grade-A back story writing that definitely doesn't ooze with bad fanfic and "original content, do not steal." Not at all
"DmC?s Dante is a young man who has no respect for authority or indeed society in general. Dante knows that he is not human, but also that he is not like the demons that have tormented him throughout his life. Caught between worlds, he feels like an outcast.
Dante grew up in various institutions, orphanages, youth correction facilities and foster homes but these were mostly operated by demons and often resulted in torture and violence. Dante has therefore developed a deep hatred of demons and authority in general but tries to stay incognito. He sides with the little guy, the victims of what he sees as an unfair society."
