I haven't played it myself (beacuse I don't own a console), but I hear Katamari Damacy is famous for being a very good non-violent game.

To be honest, I think people exaggerate the fact that there is a lot of violence in video games. Yes, there is a lot of it....but so is a lot of violence in other media as well. Like it or not, violence is a part of human nature and it comes in more ways then just outright physical violence. Plus, it is precisely the times of extreme violence that bring out the best and worst in us. So it really comes as no suprise that it is a subject that is often studied in fiction.

This is not to say that a game has to be violent to be good. Infact, it can be a refreshing change of pace when a game focuses on something other then destroying or defeating your AI/Human opponent. But just beacuse a game is violent does not mean it is automatically good or bad.

this is dumb.
there are entire genres of games, such as racing games, where violence isn't the objective (by and large)
lots of games.
(and the two main games I'm looking forward to (TD:U2 and GT5))

Let's see, I haven't seen anything fitting my definition of violence (GOW3, L4D2, MGS, and some other acronyms I can't remember) in Little Big Planet (correct me if I'm wrong). Then there's also Minesweeper, unless you think it goes against some "Smiley Face Rights" clause. (There's a smiley face that "dies" if you click on a mine in the version I've seen).

Kinda depends on your definition of violence.

Physical violence, I'm sure there are some (Japanese dating sims spring to mind, along with Sim games)

But without conflict of some sort there would be nothing to advance anything. Any good story, and this extends to any form of media as well, has an internal conflict being resolved by the actions of the characters, otherwise there literally isn't a story, it would just be people sleeping, eating and possibly watching some television.

Even then there might be some conflict, based again on how broad your search is. Conflict could be as little as 'there's no milk, so I have to buy milk.' This is the conflict of not possessing the artifact needed, and having to travel to the place from whence it can be taken, obtaining thus the legendary vial, paying the toll for its acquisition, and transporting it safely home where it can find new use.

Unless you consider it blockicide.
Yes it has violence! Hundreds of poor helpless blocks are killed each game.

100,000,000 blocks are killed each year. It isn't funny people.

Call this number "555-FAKE-AND-GAY" and you can help save a block's life today.

Silly troll.

Edutainment games are non-violent. JumpStart is a good call (3rd grade and down).

There's also Sly Cooper, Crash Bandicoot, any Mario and Sonic title, Rocket Knight Adventures, Ratchet & Clank, EyeToy games, LEGO Rock Raiders, Moomin games and a fuckton others.

I'm not a troll :( I was merely making a sarcastic comment.
I'm not even angry.
I'm being so sincere right now.
Even though you broke my heart and killed me
And tore me to pieces
And threw every piece into a fire
...
Oh, that's not where you were going with that?
