Like the previous posts say, your friend is wrong, but this site can be just as stupid. Your friend is completely oblivious to the fact that some people like a deep and engaging single player campaign, just as this site will sometimes ignore the fact that some people don't have massive anger issues and can play multiplayer without having to punch the other person every time he kills you.

this

people who believe that all games need multiplayer seem to me to be ruining games for us. think of how much better Bioshock 2 would have been with the money spent on the multiplayer instead being invested in ways of making the single player better

like making the big sister encounter what the developers originally wanted her to be

i just dont see multiplayer being necessary in games where a good story will get it played more

i also dont really see the benefit of shoe-horning multiplayer into games when there are a select group of games that actually thrive off the multiplayer and are what people return to after they beat the next big thing that had money wasted on an unplayed multiplayer.

what i think would be cool for most games to have though, even if it feels forced in, is co-op campaigns for games. i didnt mind having another master chief run around with me remaining unnoticed by friendly NPCs. i just really like playing co-op with my bro through games with cool storys. its also gives me a good opportunity to add another game or game genre to the list of gaming things i want my fiance to try

tl;dr

shoe-horning multiplayer = bad
shoe-horning co-op = good

Ok, just to see you eat you hat...

He is a retard, however, speaking specifically to Mass Effect. Multi-player would be dumb, but imagine if you could co-op with 2 friends. And instead of having mindless AI, you have friends controling you other party members? I think that idea is awesome.

Is that hat-eating-worthy? Shall I grab the salt?

But to the general point of the thread, no, not all games need multiplayer to be good. And I think the best example is Bioshock. A genra that is KNOWN for multiplayer, FPS. And someone makes an FPS with no multiplayer and it is critically praised and does very well. They go to make a squal and they try and shoe-horn multiplayer in... and the sequal suffered because of it.

And just a few more Single player games that don't need mulitplayer... Assassin's Creed, Prototype, inFamous, Dead Space, Mass Effect 1&2, Batman AA, Ninja Gaiden, Dragon Age, Fallout, Mirror's Edge... To name a few.

But does Mass Effect suck because of a lack of those things?
Well, that is where the retard part comes in. It is very short sighted to say that a game sucks based on the fact that it doesn't have multiplayer of some fasion. No, Mass Effect does not suck because of it's lack of Mulit/co-op, but it is possible to take a game that is a 9 and take it to a 10 with some simple co-op.

I re-iterate that Bioshock 2 suffered greatly because they put crapy multiplayer in it.

Damn your friends powerful stupid of course games don't need multiplayer in fact i'd go as far as to say less games should have multiplayer especially when it comes at the expense of a decent singleplayer experience.

I think he is right in part. Certain games would be terrible without multiplayer. Look at MW2 or BF:BC2 or WoW for that matter. Almost every single RTS would be terrible without multiplayer. I don't agree that "any game without multiplayer is terrible". The exceptions to that are fewer then you would think however. RPGs and puzzle games like Portal are the only things I can think of off the top of my head.

Also, I understand that a game in the categories I listed can be good without multiplayer. I think the statement would be better as "all/most games are better with multiplauer".

Well since the best selling games are Multi player, for mass appeal, you can't say multi player isn't one of the most important aspects of wide audience games. I mean look at Halo and Modern Warfare, two of the best selling games of this generation, and both of their single player experiences are mediocre at best. Zoom over to games like Mass Effect and Final Fantasy that specialize in a single player experience and the sells can tell you the whole story.

So do you need multi player? Well the masses have taught us two, is better then one in most cases, and the amount of games that defy that stereotype are few and far in between, but multi player is alot more than a bonus. Humans are social creatures and any way to interact in an entertaining environment tickles the very core of our fancy, so in short multiplayer is this.

"Multi player is like a College Degree for a game, you don't need it to be successful, but it really fucken helps."
