It's more of a joke hate for most people. We just like to call them backwards and make fun of them for saying words like "about" differently.
I've lived my entire life in Canada, and I've never heard anyone say "a-boot" non-ironically. Other the other end, most people I know do say "zed" and spell things with a "u" (honour, colour).
I hear "aboot" quite often from Canadians, but only from Alberta or Saskatchewan. Never hear it from the eastern provinces, or the west coast, for that matter.

OT: Love Canadians. Seriously. I enjoy Canadian jokes, but only in the same way i enjoy any joke. Canadians are basically just nicer, more thoughtful Americans...who wear toques and lumberjack shirts :)

One of my greatest friends is Canadian, I have nothing against them, other than their bacon being ham.

TO DATE I have never heard anyone say "about" "aboot" unless they were doing it ironically.

Half of my family is Canadian, so I'm aware that Canadians don't say "aboot" (that's really more of a Northern US thing), but my Canadian-American friend and I agree that most Canadians still pronounce it differently than most Americans.

Not that I've noticed. My brother mimiced the "ay" thing to one group he met online. They took it offensively, though he was just trying to do as Romans do when one is in Rome. (Yes, they started doing it first. No, he's not an offensive sort. Usually.)

I don't hate Canadians, but I'm from Wisconsin.

We hate so little that The KKK made some of its members move here a long time ago.
(Not a joke.)

There's also the whole joke about how milk in canada is sold in plastic bags. I've heard from canadians who've never once seen this, and candians who get all their milk this way. Once back in elementary school here in the US they said "right, milk cartons are just absolutely horrible for the environment. here's a square plastic bag filled with milk and a sharpened straw. have fun" it was so bizarre, and they went back to cartons the next year cause so many kids poked clean through the bag and spilled milk everywhere.

No, I, as an American, don't hate anyone from Canada. I do, however, like to poke fun at them all the time. Kinda like the older brother picking on the younger brother sort of thing. Kinda like Americans 'hating' British people. We don't /really/ hate them, it's just all in good fun.

It's also partly because we used to belong to them, and perhaps we mock them to show we're still independent or something (insert freudian diagnosis here).

And to be fair, they do the British do the same thing to us. I remember being in the Tower of London and our tour guide going, "How many of you are Americans? You know, all of this /COULD/ have been your history, too, if you had /JUST/ paid your taxes~"

I don't know why I would. I don't think I've ever met anyone who does. What is there to hate?

If you are gathering this from the 'aboot' and 'milk bag' jokes - really that's just teasing. You are lucky to get such light teasing compared to some of the 'teasing' that other countries hurl at each other.

Also,I had no idea that the stereotypes that all Canadians have pet beavers and live in igloos even existed until a Canadian friend of mine said them and accused all Americans of believing such things. I had never once heard that, from anyone - until he told me. lol.

It's more of a friendly rivalry.

I still have some enmity to them for that nasty trick they pulled with "Bacon".

I have noticed over time that americans seem to dislike canadians esspecially in there industry. Also in there media canadians are either very stereotyped and ussually portayed very negativly despite us essentially sharing the same culture. I have even heard various stories from fellow canadians who have been to the states for college or work and have activly experianced prejudice in various levels some to the point they even had to leave. Now I am not saying all americans are prejudice or anything of that nature but its more of a question of whether it is uncommon or not to have american people activly disliking anything canadian or anyone canadian taking part in there society?
I would definitely say no. The only "negative" portrayal of Canadians I've seen anyone talk about or portray in any media was light hearted joking (Har har they all drink maple syrup, are nice to a fault, and say words funny). American's generally look at Canada as one of our closes friends/allies. That is my understanding of it anyway and the way people around where I live feel about it.

Then again I live in Minnesota so there may be some bias there.

I do know some Canadians I used to play PSO with that have yet to forgive the US over the Montreal Screwjob.

Insults and stereotypes are one thing, but to do that to Bret?! Unforgivable!

It's not just Canadians that Americans hate. And I think it's terrible that they do. But then again, I'm one of those people that hopes one day people will stop being so damn ignorant and just get along. I've never really met an actual Canadian outside of the internet, but the few whom I have spoken to are quite enjoyable to be around. So no, I don't hate you guys.

Nope, no hate at all...my ex-wife and I used to vacation up in Canada all the time. I think a fair amount of this perceived negativity comes from people who take South Park a little too seriously, maybe....? I dunno, Canada's easily one of the nicest countries out there.
