When I read the topic for this thread I thought this is definitely some troll fodder.

Then as I read through here it seems every comment needs to have some sort of joke tacked onto it. And they don't seem overly funny.
It seems that even though you mean well in terms of "not hating" Canadians, you seem to drop right back down to stereotyping.

Being Canadian, I've heard it all and just kind of shrugged it all off. I am surprised a lot of the American stereotypes haven't been brought up in defense. Like "You are all loud", "Warmongers" or "Rednecks", ETC. Odd, oh well. Just thought I'd share my thoughts on the subject.

I guess in the end haters are going to hate, so let them go at it.

I guess I can see what you mean by troll thread but I have legitimently met people who have told me they have gotten flak for being canadian. My cuz's bf went to college there and ended up leaving because people looked down on him for it and even a few teachers would give him a hard time. Like at thankgiving he asked to take a midterm early so he could see his family for thanksgiving cause you know he would see them all of 3 times a year and the teacher said sucks to be canadian just things like that.

Much like the so-called gingers, I don't think anyone had actual negative feelings about canadians until South Park ripped on them.

Oh well.

Considering how many excellent actors and comediens are Canadian, I don't see why Americans would.
but I am annoyed with this statement

In there media, canadians are either very stereotyped and ussually portayed very negativly despite us essentially sharing the same culture.
we share aspects of it but we are not the same.

It's more of a joke hate for most people. We just like to call them backwards and make fun of them for saying words like "about" differently.
Pretty much this. It's a silly little joke, that almost every American realizes is a joke.

However, I quite like the perks of living so close to the Canadian border. Since the drinking age is 19 there, its only a quick 20 minute drive over the bridge so I can hit up a bar with my friends.

It definitely isn't all Americans, but every now and then, you get a little gem like this:

*facedesk* Thank you, we've given the rest of the world yet another reason to hate the US.

exactly thats why I said "essentially" implying that we share almost everything culture wise.
I mean the only thing I can think of that is all that different is maybe 5 or 6 things

The one problem with freedom of speech down here in the US is there are certain parts of the country where there exist pockets of ignorant people who haven't learned to shut their face, and for some reason those people like to speak at a louder volume than the rest of us at times. (probably because they're too self-absorbed to realize that they don't need to yell when talking to people 2 feet from them)

You also mention a negative portrayal in the media in your op and I was wondering if you could give me some examples. I can only think of a handful off the top of my head... and one of them was pretty messed up (Fox News calling your troops lazy or whatever that was) but the others seemed harmless to me, but maybe you've got more examples.

They come off as they don't even have two functioning brain cells. and do they think that Canadians don't have access to Fox news?

I have noticed over time that americans seem to dislike canadians esspecially in there industry. Also in there media canadians are either very stereotyped and ussually portayed very negativly despite us essentially sharing the same culture. I have even heard various stories from fellow canadians who have been to the states for college or work and have activly experianced prejudice in various levels some to the point they even had to leave. Now I am not saying all americans are prejudice or anything of that nature but its more of a question of whether it is uncommon or not to have american people activly disliking anything canadian or anyone canadian taking part in there society?
It's like when you rip on a friend for something stupid.

You don't actually mean it, but sometimes they think you do.

Typically, it's better to not make fun of your friends, but shit happens.

I find alot of times were portayed as weak and super dependant on everyone else particularily the americans as if we would all stave to death without them. It often leads to people thinking of us as a "younger brother country" which implies that we are less mature and unable to handle ourselves even pushes the idea that we really don't know a whole lot. For the most part the media I describe is more or less joking but people take it to heart often not even realizing it in subtle ways not straight out but in there overall views.

Here in Canada with you guys being our biggest trading partner and same backwards plus us sharing the worlds largest unprotected boarderline we tend to follow your politics and general ongoings because it effects us but I have noticed you guys most certainly dont do the same backwards and most americans likely couldn't name all of our provinces or territorys let alone mention any remote ongoings here.

So its not that whats going on in the media is all together negative its that the only perception alot of people have is only just that the little jokes and stereotypes that get thrown around about us and I get the impression it leads to dislike and wrongful impressions whether people relize it out right or not.

Naw man, how could we hate the people living in our hat? <3

Mostly the way I see Canadians portrayed can be categorized as "silly, but always well-intentioned" And when I see for realz Canadians (on one of the shows here or as a friend of my grandparents) I can't really tell them apart from anyone else. (I thought the LRR gang was composed of 'Mrrkens (That's how Texans say "Americans") until they mentioned otherwise)

In my experience we don't hate you guys. We just make lighthearted jokes at your expense whilst quietly wondering why we haven't annexed you yet.
It's because you're full of French speakers. That's more or less the only reason

Two of my best friends are Canadians and both of them are absolutely thrilled to point out that Canada has shows that go out of their way to find stupid Americans on the street and ask them questions for laughs. I've watched these shows personally every time I go up to Canada.

When I come home to California, I turn on the TV and never hear mention of Canadians except from conservative circles (who have a grudge against Canada because of their healthcare system and banking system actually... y'know... working.)

A Canadian comedian actually framed it well: America and Canada have a sibling rivalry and that's been long ago escalated into a personal rivalry. However, while Canada takes this rivalry rather seriously, America was never told.

I'm not saying that Canada's not represented comically in our media... I'm just saying it goes both ways and there's no "hatred" behind it. We're sibling countries, we mock each other, were there a geopolitical equivalent to a wedgie we'd be giving them to each other.

Though, one thing can be agreed on: Most people are annoyed by Quebec, this is true on both sides of the border (either you're part of the country or you're not, don't waffle)

I don't see anything wrong with Canadians...
it is a bit strange that a few words are pronounced so differently('about' and 'sorry' come to mind)
But I that it's more of a joke when Americans show any Canadian hate.

Oh, why is it that there are 2 whole continents of America but only the USA gets the title of America?
That has always bugged me...
