Do they? For example, if there is a choice to be a black guy, asian guy, or a white dude (Think Fallout or something along those lines) then who do you pick?

I'm white and I always choose the black guy because I reckon they are bad ass.

Also a shout out to my best mates new song!

Lol, this thread is destined for racist comments. Personally, I don't mind playing the black guy, I don't really care what character I play actually. If it's a roleplaying game then I would like to make my character resemble me if possible. I'm half asian and half caucasian. (cauc-asian? XD)
As far as black people playing black characters, I think some would if they take the same mentality as me and want to make a character resemble themself. Otherwise many of them may not really care.

It would seem logical to me, most of the time I play as a white male, because I am a white male.

Because I'm a realist and don't fall for the social propaganda that there isn't a difference between Black/Asian/Whites. I'm not racist, infact, I love black people, but I'm still curious.

If this thread was considered racist, then doing a survey on indigenous Australians is technically racist.. So I guess certain government committees in Australia are racist... rotten bastards!!

Its not being racist, its an actual question that I've wondered myself. I've mainly thought of it in terms of books though.

Woah, calm down. It's a legitimate question.

Personally, I'm white but I like tanned skin so it's Hispanic or similar ethnicity for me.

In an RPG where you can craft your PC, in the first playthrough I tend to make someone who looks like me (i.e. a person of color) and tends to make choices I would make (sort of) were I in that situation. My second playthrough, I go for something very different. Which also often means that the person's race is different than mine.

Do women choose female characters in games? Do children choose kids? Do emos choose JRPG heroes?

Some people, of whatever subtype, will prefer to identify with characters of the same group. Others will want to play as something different. Both camps tend to argue that this improves their roleplaying experience and immersion.

Others, myself included, don't care, and choose customisation options based on other factors (rule of cool, rule of funny, etc.).

I always make my character look as close to me as possible.

Since i'm a 5'10 white male with a buzz cut and a permanent 5 oclock shadow it's pretty damn easy to do.

I don't think I could roleplay as a black character, it would bother me. Same with female characters. They just don't seem "like me" enough. Don't get me wrong I can play as a black character (redguard FTW) but I treat it as a game instead of a what-if scenario.

When it comes to certain things? Yeah.
But for things like, school applications etc no, it think it's silly to bother asking.
[Edit for clarity]: Yeah I think it is silly to ask for things such as bank loan applications but for things like medical forms it can be important to know someone's ethnic heredity. [/edit]

Almost all Australian forms ask if you're an Aboriginal and I think it's silly. Most have the refuse to answer option, which I always pick, but I think it re-enforces an us versus them mentality that divides the community and gives some people the impression that if they'd been Aboriginal their application may have been successful or they may have been given an advantage of some sort.

It matters in the same way that your hairstyle, clothing, our choice of jewelry matters: esthetically. Only difference is in real life we don't get to choose our skin tone as much. But in a virtual environment you might decide you prefer to look one way or the other.

Depends on the detail design/play style.
Single player/Story? All bets are off with or without a Character Editor.

Multiplayer with the only a half dozen Skins that all look decent I'll go with a black guy(Like I am.)

MP with a detailed Editor with no benefit or nudge to make multiple chars I'll make them like me (to an extent.)
