Benevolent racism is still racism.

Anyway, I'm not black, but whenever I get the option to play as a female I always take it because it's so incredibly difficult to find games that allow you that option. I imagine many black people feel the same way about black characters, though it's not as if they always have to play as a black character, just like I don't always have to play as a female one.
I actually thought about that when I was posting and kinda thought "meh", no one will probably notice. I LOVE BLACK PEOPLE! BURN ME TO A CROSS!!

I'm not racist 'but'

I pick X race because I think it's better and they are cooler and I see Y race looking all smug on the streets, X race also has better women and likes the things I like.
Which would be an incredibly sad depiction of life if that were the case... and perhaps that is the case!!! But that doesn't lead me to believe this thread is racist!

Infact, this thread is perhaps the beginning of something beautiful, a world where there is no difference between races in society. Perhaps this thread will lead someone to think a little bit differently when choosing a character in their game ;)
I was just making a slightly mocking generic reply because that happens sometimes when the subject matter seems like something a lot of people are going to be misinformed over ;p.

On a more serious note I tend to mix it up depending how I feel, sometimes I make the darkest skin coloured guy with blonde braids just for the hell of it, and sometimes I try harder to create me. My only oblivion race was the dark elves kinda thing, in AoC my main char was super huge and super black with massive black hair and bright blue eyes I think, but then my 2nd character was bald and pale as a sheet :p. Fairly often I am influenced by gameplay, in ME I just stuck with basic Shephard coz I suck at making realistic faces in that game that don't look terrible.

Basically if there's any benefit attached to that race I will think of that more than the looks, otherwise it's just however I feel like being at the time which covers a pretty wide spectrum.

I usually play a white male probably because i am white and i just dont identify as much with characters from other races. Then again if i get to play as a badass looking black guy (GTA San Andreas for example) i do like that because it better helps driving the story forward from a different perspective then my own. Ethnicity is very low on my list of important gaming aspects if it does not help with the story (which is in most cases)

race matters but definatly not in a social context. It only matters concerning the fact that it is a part of your identity. It's a personal issue for everyone. Saying that race doesn't matter at all i consider somewhat of an insult to every persons identity on the planet.

I am racist too. Black people > white people. And again, I am white.

When I have the opportunity to make a character, yes, I usually make one that kind of looks like myself (white, male) but then that usually doesnt work or look good in the engine- or I second guess myself and I just spend time making a character that looks good in the engine or fits whatever I'm thinking to play as. Which I would say is usually a character of another race, especially if my character is a different race within the game (trolololol)

I think it is interesting to see what people do with character creation in games. Says a little about the person when it comes to how much the character looks like them, if it's a 'perfect' version of themselves or if it looks nothing like them or just some horrid looking thing.

Then why do you pick a black guy because he's "bad ass," as opposed to the white guy? See, what you really mean is "I hope this thread will lead people to pick black guys in games" NOT "perhaps this thread will lead people to see no difference in the races." If you really don't care about race, then you shouldn't "see" it when someone picks the white guy. It shouldn't even register on your mind. But clearly it does. The only difference is you're trying to LOOK like it doesn't by picking the transgender cross-dressing black homosexual character.
I actually mentioned in one of my previous posts that I am technically rascist.

This is as ridiculous as asking if male gamers always pick the male character. Or if all girls like pink clothes in games.

I play whatever character I think suits the role I want to play. In New Vegas I played an African American guy inspired by Eli from the book of Eli (though he was only blind in one eye due to being shot in the face by Benny. He even had an eye patch and all :D). He was grizzled, old looking and lived in a shack, creating stuff from junk he had scavenged (that's how I got most of my weapons and armor, by crafting them). He was black because I felt it suited his character more. I don't think it would be the same if this character looked like Nathan Drake. In fact that would be horrible.

So my point is, the only role race plays in video games is the appearance of your character. Not everyone wants to play the young white rose cheeked hero with a stubble, perfect skin and "gorgeous" hair (also known as that guy from almost every fucking action game, or the Hollywood hero).

Do they? For example, if there is a choice to be a black guy, asian guy, or a white dude (Think Fallout or something along those lines) then who do you pick?

I'm white and I always choose the black guy because I reckon they are bad ass.

Also a shout out to my best mates new song!

Well, it depends on a lot of factors, one of the major ones is stats if the characters have them. To put things into perspective, in choosing a character in say "Borderlands" whether you choose to play as the Black character largely depends on whether you want his skill set, or that of another character. In games like "Zombie Revenge" (old Beat 'Em Up title) you had a white guy, a white girl, and a Japanese guy. They had balanced stats, ranged focus, and melee focus in their abillities and combo differances respectively.

When it comes to character creation, and having a detailed system with skin color sliders and everything, it largely comes down to what looks good. To be honest I've found that either extrmely light or extreme dark skin tones have a good chance of coming out looking like garbage. White seeming like fish-belly albinism, and dark black seeming like someone dumped ink on the screen. I usually wind up going with a mid-range skin tone, usually in anywhere from an olive-hued, a more dusky "gypsy" type appearane in many cases. It might just be having alot of graphics producers from Asia, but I do tend to notice that given the option asian models tend to turn out fairly well when the features are combined, I've oftentimes wondered if it's because the guys doing the engines (I haven't checked the names that often) simply tested those aspects better.

Interestingly, on the rare occasions when I come up with something that seems "perfect" I usually wind up with a eurasian look, which I guess is common from people who have been tested using pictures to see if there was a general "universal" standard of beauty. Of course I find very few games with customization where I can create a character that I think has anything close to ideal looks.

Thats why my serial killer characters in fallout are always white guys in their 30s who have mother issues.

I'm white and I like to roleplay and when I create a character I like to run the gambit of race and gender. My first Shepard was black man, my first Tony Hawk Underground character was black, numerous others that weren't my first character were black. So yeah race doesn't stop me from identifying with the character, nor does it pull me out of the game.

I like to choose the raider skin for my psychos, because they are filthy looking and... well psychotic!

Wait a minute, how do you play serial killers? Do you make a habit to steal your victims feet or something?

Then it should not bother you if other people are also "technically racist," since that would make no sense.
It's fair to say that I prefer a world with no racism but I don't care if there is racism in thread.

The same way I would say I would prefer the world without litter yet I don't mind chucking a coke can out my window every now and then.

Once I cut their throats in bed I hack off a leg take it and use a tagging gun to teleport it to my hideout. Going to try a underwear mod next and see if I can keep their skivvies as trophies.

Talk about lucky guess huh. Well, technically. The feet are part of the leg after all.

Wow... That sounds like fun :D
