I choose Caucasian most of the time, unless the plot calls for some specific ethnicity (like Guild Wars Nightfall). It most definitely has something to do with me being Caucasian and finding other Caucasians more attractive than other races, with the exception of East Asia. I find everything east of India hot! Unfortunately I still haven't seen a game where East Asians don't look like they all have a bad case of the Down syndrome.

I mean I usually choose my character's based on my own characteristics so I'd imagine so.

When I was a kid I mostly chose younger characters with a more childish sense of humour, these days I don't mind making older characters and whacking on a beard or whatever.

Do women choose female characters in games? Do children choose kids? Do emos choose JRPG heroes?

Some people, of whatever subtype, will prefer to identify with characters of the same group. Others will want to play as something different. Both camps tend to argue that this improves their roleplaying experience and immersion.

Others, myself included, don't care, and choose customisation options based on other factors (rule of cool, rule of funny, etc.).
But...but...we need to know!!! What do all white people play, and what do all black people play, and what do all girls play, etc!!! It's a 100% True Opinion that one race plays one type of character!!!!

Wait...you listed girls separately from white people and black people? Are you saying you're from a separate race?

YES! THEY ARE SEPARATE BASED ON GAMEROLOGY. THEY LIVE IN KITCHENS AND EXPORT SAMMICHES. RACE MATTERS EXCEPT FOR WHEN IT COMES TO GENDER, THEN IT DOESN'T MATTER.

But, no I agree with you. I just wanted to get that out of the way so we wouldn't see anymore of it. But that's wishful thinking.

I usually stick to very pale-skinned characters as I have the pasty cottage cheese skin of any true irish man, but I do that purely for familiarity. When trying to create the most interesting, new character I haven't toyed with before, race is unimportant... My DA2 Rogue in my first playthrough was white, now my Mage is a bald middle-eastern looking guy who looks really cool in Demonic Robes.

In RPGs (which, I assume, is what you're talking about) my characters tend to run the gamut of character types. Mostly because I like actually roleplaying- so I'll create a character and try to go through the game how they would, just to see what happens. So I've had a black male character, sure. Just as I've had other races of characters. And I'm a Caucasian female. ...That's not even mentioning the Khajiit I had in Morrowind. My characters tend to be rather varied, and unless I particularly like one, I won't use the same person twice.

As for games with preset characters (a la Borderlands, JRPGs, etc.) I tend to pick the character who best suits my playstyle, regardless of how they look.

I like the character to resemble me if possible, so if I have the choice to make a character it's always caucasian and female. However in a game like Skateboard Jam on Miniclip (just an awsome lil online game, I hope this doesn't count as advertising :p) there are 4 available characters to choose from and one is black. Since they are all male and look nothing like me, sometimes I pick the black guy because it is past the point where any resemble me at all. I sorta pick randomly I guess :)

I'm going to throw my two cents in here and say that I like to play as a female, and generally choose roles that are more suited to what.. I'd do? I guess?
Or maybe it is because I made the horrible choice of playing Fable II once, and upgraded my wall-eyed heroine's strength all at once to discover that she had become a butch she-hulk. :I Ever since then I've been more inclined to give my female avatars more stealthy roles...

My favourite Mortal Kombat character is Cyrax, and hes BLACK. OMG.

anywhat what im getting at is people tend to just play as the characters they like, regardless.

but, if it comes down to actually creating a character i would make a white male, cus im a white male! and i want to play as (A more heroic verson of) ME!

I'm sure they do. You could ask white players if they choose white characters when they get the option. really you could ask anyone that.

The question is really why it would matter?

I have a couple things to say...

We are all red inside, if you do not like that fact, please direct your attention to that brick wall over there until you realise that Racism is not important. I'm serious, until we realise that we are human, and not full of diverse races, we will never get anywhere.

And to people who point out racism all the time, thinking you are doing the world a favor, you are not. You are actually doing nothing but pointing out the diversness of the world, thus actually making it worse each time you do it. So keep your mouth shut. You are the racists of the world, so thank you and have a nice day.

Equality, Balance, and a dash of Blissful Ignorance, is key to stepping forward.

EDIT - Sorry I lost control there... To OP: I don't really care for race, but I usually choose caucasian with a tanned look. It's my thing.

Some do, some dont.
Some people prefer playing a character as close to themselves as possible while others may create a totally different one

Now who here doesn't pick the white dudes because they look like glowing pale ghosts in games? I looked at my fallout 3/NV saves and according to that I'm 70% hispanic, 28%black and 2% white.

Dunno about black people, but I'm white and I also sometimes go for a black character. Depends how they're done though, when games do them right, they can be awesome, but when done wrong (oh hey let's put a coat of paint over that model and call it a black guy), it looks downright awful.

I'm a white male who plays a white female/male character in most things, mainly because it helps makeup (I make gothic looking characters because I find it aesthetically pleasing) and facial features stand out more and because, being white I end up thinking, 'does my character look too stereotypical?'(I tend to pick an afro if I make a black character).

That and in most fantasy games if you make a black character you end up looking massively out of place, especially in games with origin stories (Oblivion/Fallout games usually get around this though)
